Diocese of St. Cloud Chancery Office St. Cloud, Minnesota November 15, 1950 Feast of St. Albert The Great Foreword : I am very pleased to recommend “Four Holy Hours”, arranged for Private and Congregational use by the Reverend Henry Frank. We note, especially within the last decade, that participation in a Holy Hour devotion is emphasized and practiced by many Catholics and by many of our non-Catholic friends. Father Henry Frank’s “Four Holy Hours” offers us a handy, practical booklet to make a profitable Holy Hour. The Holy Bible, excerpts of prayers from the Mass, parts of writings from the Fathers, official Litanies of the Church, approved Indulgenced Prayers of the Church are handily com- piled by the author to enable the user to make a devotional and profitable Holy Hour. It is our sincere desire and fond hope that many more people will begin the devotion of mak- ing a Holy Hour which fills a great need in this modern day of calamity, wars, unrest, and that the prayers of many turned in humble supplication to the merciful God will obtain Peace for the World, Peace for our Nation, Peace for the individual Soul, and restore Christ to His lawful place in Society. Praying God’s blessing on all users of the “Four Holy Hours”, I remain Devotedly yours in Christ, + Jos. F. Busch Bishop of St. Cloud. INTRODUCTION Praying- and singing may easily prove mon- otonous if the laity attend merely as listeners. This is obvious if the devotions are quite lengthy. When the laity participate in the praying and singing they experience a keener appreciation in the de- votion. Participation in a Holy Hour devotion is es- pecially emphasized in our times. The laity need very little instruction and they will be able to conduct a Holy Hour. This booklet, FOUR HOLY HOURS, contains an arrangement of dialogue praying and group sing- ing which can be followed by young and old. One lay person of each of two groups, alternating in the recitation of the prayers, introduces the psalms with the designated antiphons. The 32 psalms, which form the major part of the FOUR HOLY HOURS, are definitely the “ideal manifestation of man’s hunger and thirst after God and of God’s loving response to man. They are as satisfying and stimulating to us of the twentieth century as they were in King David’s time. The character of King David’s faith, his loyalty to the law, his brave facing of the facts, his all-out effort to defeat the liars and deceivers of Israel” are ex- pressed in almost every psalm. May we pray the psalms with the fervor in which they were written! May all who participate in a Holy Hour de- votion obtain from the omnipotent God “peace and order to all nations,” so that “the earth may re- sound “from pole to pole with one cry: ‘Praise to the Divine Heart that wrought our salvation; to it be glory and honor forever.’ ” October 17, 1950 Feast of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. Priest EPISTLE OF MAUNDY THURSDAY (I Cor. 11, 20-32.) For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and giving thanks, broke, and said: Take ye, and eat; this is My Body which shall be delivered for you; this do for the commemoration of Me. In like manner also the chalice, after He had supped, say- ing: This chalice is the New Testament of My Blood; this do ye, as often as you shall drink, for the commemoration of Me. For as often as you shall eat this Bread and drink this Chalice you shall show the death of the Lord until He come- Therefore, whosoever shall eat this Bread or drink this Chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the Body and of the Blbod of the Lord. But let a man prove himself; and so let him eat of that Bread and drink of the Chalice. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh judgment to himself; not discerning the Body of the Lord. Therefore are there many infirm and weak among you and many sleep. But if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged; but whilst we are judged we are chastised by the Lord that we be not condemned with this world. 15— (Choir and Congregation) JESUS, MY LORD, MY GOD, MY ALL (Nicola A. THE CONFITEOR Priest and Congregation I confess to Almighty God,—to blessed Mary ever Virgin,—to blessed Michael the Archangel,—to blessed John the Baptist,—to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,—and to all the Saints,—that I —16— have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, —through my fault,—through my fault,—through my most grievous fault.—Therefore I beseech the blessed Mary ever Virgin,—blessed Michael the Archangel,—blessed John the Baptist,—the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,—and all the Saints,—to pray to the Lord for me. (Antiphon) : 0 Lord, reprove me not in thy anger — Psalm 6. 1. O Lord, reprove me not in thy anger, nor chastise me in thy wrath. 2. Return, 0 Lord, and save my life, rescue me for thy mercy’s sake. 5. For in death no one remembers thee: who praises thee in the abode of the dead? 6. I am worn out with my sighing, night after night I moisten my bed with weeping, with tears I drench my couch. 7. My eye is dim because of grief, has grown old because of all my enemies. 8. Depart from me, all you evildoers, for the Lord has heard my tearful cry. 9. The Lord has heard my pleading, the Lord has accepted my prayer. 10. Let all my foes be brought to shame and utter confusion ; let them turn back and speedily be brought to shame. 11. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 12. My soul waits for the Lord, more than watch- men for the dawn. 7. More than watchmen for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord ; For with the Lord is mercy and with him plenteous redemption : 8. And he shall redeem Israel from all its sins. 9. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 10. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. (Antiphon) : To thee, O Lord, I flee for refuge — Psalm 70 1. To thee, 0 Lord, I flee for refuge: let me never be put to shame; 2. In thy justice deliver me and rescue me; in- cline thy ear to me and save me. 3. Be thou a rock of refuge to me, a fortress to save me: for thou art my rock and my strong- hold. 4. 0 my God, rescue me from the hand of the sinner, from the fist of the evildoer and the violent : 5. For thou art my trust, 0 my God, 0 Lord, my hope from my youth. 6. Upon thee have I leaned from birth; from my mother’s womb thou wast my protector: in thee I hoped always- 7. I have appeared as a marvel to many; for thou wast my strong refuge. 8. My mouth was full of thy praise, of thy glory all day long. 19 9 . Cast me not off in my old age; when my strength fails, forsake me not. 10. For my enemies talk about me, and they who watch me take counsel together. 11. Saying: “God has forsaken him; pursue and seize him, for there is none to deliver him.” 12. O God, be not far from me, O my God hasten to help me. 13- Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 14. As is was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. How long will you rush upon a man, to overthrow him, all of you like a leaning wall of a house, or a totterting wall of a city. 4. Truly, they plot to hurl me from my high place, they delight in lies; They bless with their mouth ; and they curse in their heart. 5. In God alone be at rest, 0 my soul, for my hope comes from him. 6. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my de- fense : I shall not waver. 7. God alone possesses my salvation and my glory, the rock of my strength: my refuge is in God. —20- 8. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before him: God is our refuge! 9. The children of the lowly are but a breath, the children of the lofty are false. In the scales they rise high, all together they are lighter than a breath. 10. Rely not on violence, and glory not vainly in plunder; if wealth increase, set not your heart upon it. 11. Once God spoke; these two things have I heard : “power belongs to God, and to thee, 0 Lord, mercy; for thou dost render to every man according to his work.” 12. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 13. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end- Amen. The Sacred Penit., Oct. 23, 1928.) Priest GOSPEL OF MAUNDY THURSDAY (John 13, 1-5.) Before the festival day of the Pasch, Jesus know- ing that His hour was come that He should pass out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world He loved them unto the end. And when supper was done (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,) knowing that the Father had given Him all things into His hands, and that He came from God, and goeth to God, He riseth from supper and layeth aside His garments, and having taken a towel He girdeth Himself, and after that He putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded. He com- eth therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to Him: Lord, dost Thou wash my feet? Jesus an- swered and said to him : What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith to Him : Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus an- —22— swered him : If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with Me. Simon Peter saith to Him : Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith to him : He that is washed needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all. For He knew who he was that would betray Him ; therefore He said : You are not all clean. Then after He had washed their feet and taken His garments, being sat down again, He said to them: Know ye what I have done to you? You call Me Master and Lord: and you say well, for so I am: if then I, being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one an- other’s feet; for I have given you an example that as I have done to you, so you do also. (An Indulgence of one hundred days. The Sacred Penit., Oct. 22, 1921.) God, be merciful to me, a sinner. (An Indulgence of one hundred days. The Sacred Penit., June 21, 1927.) Priest HOMILY OF ST. AUGUSTINE (Lesson IX of the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity) There are two works of mercy which set us free, and these the Lord briefly laid down in the Gospel : forgive, and it shall be forgiven you; this refers to the pardoning of offences; give, and it shall be given to you ; this refers to the giving of alms. As to what He says of pardoning offences, you desire to be forgiven for what you have done wrong, and you have some one whom you on your side can for- give. Again, as to what regards almsgiving, a beg- gar asks something of you and you are a beggar of God. For when we pray, we are all beggars of God ; before the door of the great Father of the family we stand, we even cast ourselves down and groan in prayer; wishing to receive something; and this —30— something is God Himself. What does a beggar ask of you, but bread ? And what do you ask of God ex- cept Christ, Who says : I am the bread of life which came down from heaven? If you wish to be forgiv- en, do you yourselves forgive others? Forgive, and it shall be forgiven you. Do you wish to receive something? Give, and it shall be given to you. For my guilt bias overwhelmed me, like a heavy load it weighs me down. 5. My wounds are foul and festering because of my folly. 6. I am bent, I am bowed down exceedingly, all day long I go about mourning. 7. For my loins are filled with burning pains, and there is nothing healthy in my flesh. —32 — 8. I am benumbed and badly crushed, I cry aloud because of the wild surging of my heart. 9. All my desire is known to thee, O Lord, and my sighing is not hidden from thee. 10. My heart throbs, my strength is leaving me, and the very light of my eyes fails me. 11. My friends and my companions stand aloof from my affliction, and my relatives stand afar off. 12. They who seek my life lay snares, and they who seek to injure me threaten ruin, and scheme treachery all day long. 13. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost ; 14. Wash me completely from my guilt, and cleanse me from my sin. 3. For I acknowledge my iniquity, and my sin is always before me. 4. Against thee only have I sinned, and I have done what is evil in thy sight. 5. This I confess that thou mayest be known to be just in thy sentence, right in thy judgment. —33— 6. Behold, I was born in guilt, and my mother conceived me in sin. 7. Behold, thou dost delight in sincerity of heart, and teachest me wisdom in the depths of my soul. 8. Deliver me from blood-guilt, 0 God, God my Savior: let my tongue rejoice because of thy justice. 16. 0 Lord, open thou my lips, and my mouth shall declare thy praise. 17. For thou dost not delight in sacrifice; and a burnt-offering thou wouldst not accept, if I offered it. 18. My sacrifice, 0 God, is a contrite spirit, a contrite and humbled heart, 0 God, thou wilt not despise. 19. In thy goodness, 0 Lord, deal kindly with Sion, that thou mayest rebuilt the walls of Jeru- salem. 34 20. Let its waters roar and rage, let the moun- tains be shaken by its violence: The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 4. The streams of the river gladden the city of God, the holy dwelling place of the Most High. 5. God is in the midst of it, nor shall it be dis- turbed; God will help it at the break of day. 6. Nations were in tumult, kingdoms tottered; his voice thundered, the earth dissolved : 7. The Lord of hosts is with us ; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. 8. Come, behold the works of the Lord, what wonders he has done upon earth. 9. Who makes wars to cease even unto the ends of the earth, he breaks the bows and shatters the spears, and the shields he burns with fire- 10. And I say : Oh that I had wings like a dove, I would fly away and be at rest; 7. Behold, I would go far away, I would live in the wilderness. 8. Swiftly would I seek refuge for myself from the whirlwind and the storm. 9. Destroy them, 0 Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and discord in the city. 10. Day and night they go about on its walls, and wickedness and oppression are in its midst. 11- Treachery is within it, and violence and deceit depart not from its streets. 12. If an enemy had insulted me, truly I could have borne it; 13. If he Avho hates me, had risen against me, I could have hidden myself from him. 14. But it was thou, my comrade, my intimate friend, 15. BERNARD (Lesson IV of the II Nocturn of the Octave Day of the Feast of the Sacred Heart.) Where, in fact, is there sure and lasting safety and rest for us who are weak, except in the wounds of the Savior? There I dwell in safety so much the —88— greater, as He is so powerful to save. The world rages around me, the body weighs upon me, the devil lays snares for me: but I do not fall; for I am founded upon a firm rock. I have committed a great sin : my conscience is troubled, but will not despair, because I remember the wounds of the Lord. For, indeed, He was wounded for our iniqui- ties. What is there so deadly that it may not be remitted through the death of Christ? If then I keep in remembrance a remedy so powerful and so efficacious, I cannot now be terrified by any malignity of disease. Choir and Congregation 0 HEART OF JESUS, HEART OF GOD (Nicola A. (Antiphon): O Lord, answer my prayer Psalm 101 1. 0 Lord, answer my prayer, and let my cry come to thee. 2. Hide not thy face from me in the day of my distress. 3. Incline thy ear to me: when I call thee, an- swer me speedily. 4. For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn like fire. 5. My heart, scorched like grass, is withering away, I forget to eat my food. 6. Because of the violence of my moaning, my bones cleave to my skin. 7. I am like a pelican in the wilderness, I have become like an owl among ruins. 8. I am sleepless and I moan like a solitary bird on the housetop. 9. My enemies are always insulting me; they who rage against me, swear by my name. —48 — 10. For I eat ashes like bread, and mingle my drink with tears, 11. Because of thy indignation and thy wrath, for thou hast lifted me up and cast me down. 12. My days are like lengthened shadows, and I am withering away like grass. 13. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 14. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Antiphon) : 0 Lord, answer my prayer, and let my cry come to thee. (Antiphon) : In God I put my trust — Psalm 56 1. Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in thee my soul takes refuge. 2. And in the shadow of thy wings I seek refuge, till the disaster be past. 3. I cry to God Most High, to God my benefactor. 4. May he send help from heaven to save me, may he bring disgrace upon those who perse- cute me; may God send his grace and faith- fulness. 5. I lie down in the midst of lions, that greedily devour men. 6. Their teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue is a sharp sword. 7. Be thou exalted, 0 God, above the heavens; may thy glory be over all the earth. 8. They have laid a snare for my feet: and bowed down my soul; 9. They dug a pit before me : may they fall into it. -49- 10. My heart is steadfast, 0 God, my heart is steadfast; I will chant and sing praises. 11. Awake, O my soul; awake harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. 12. I will praise thee, 0 Lord, among the peoples ; I will sing praises to thee among the nations, 13. For thy goodness is great even unto the heav- ens, and thy faithfulness unto the clouds. 14. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; may thy glory be over all the earth! 15. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 16. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Antiphon): In God I put my trust, I will not fear: what can man do to me. PRAYERS OF PETITION P.—0 Lord, open Thou my lips: C.—And my mouth shall declare Thy praise. P.—Make speed, O God, to save me; C.—Make haste, 0 Lord, to help me. p.—Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; C.—As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. THE LORD’S PRAYER (Priest and Congregation) Our Father Who art in Heaven,—hallowed be Thy name ;—Thy kingdom come ;—Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven;—give us this day our daily bread;—and forgive us our trespasses,—as we forgive them that trespass against us;—and lead us not into temptation,—but deliver us from evil. Amen. —50— (Antiphon): Remove, 0 Lord — Psalm 38 1. I said; I will guard my ways, lest I sin with my tongue; 2. I will put a bridle on my mouth, while the wicked man stands before me. 3. I kept complete silence and had no comfort, my pain was even increased. 4. My heart grew hot within me as I reflected, fire burst into flame : I spoke with my tongue. 5. Lord, let me know my end, and what is the length of my days, that I may know how frail I am. 6. Behold, thou hast made my days but a short span, and my life is as nothing before thee: every man is but a breath. 7. Man passes away like a mere shadow, fruitless is all his worrying ; he hoards and knows not who shall enjoy these things. 8. And now what can I expect, 0 Lord? My hope is in thee. 9. Deliver me from all my sins, make me not the reproach of the fool. 10. I am dumb and open not my mouth; for thou hast done it. 11. Remove thy scourge from me : I am perishing under the blows of thy hand. 12. By punishing man’s guilt, thou dost correct him; like a moth, thou dost consume his pre- cious life: every man is but a breath. 13. Hear my prayer, O Lord, listen to my cry, be not indifferent to my tears. For I am a guest, a pilgrim like all my fathers. —51— 14 . 15 . Turn thy angry eyes from me, that I may be refreshed, before I depart and be no more. 16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 17. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Antiphon); Remove, O Lord, thy scourge from me. (Antiphon) : Let my prayer — Psalm 87 1. O Lord, my God, by day I call, by night I cry out before thee. 2. Let my prayer come before thee, incline thy ear to my cry. 3. For my soul is full of evils, and my life is nearing the abyss. 4. I am numbered among those who go down into the pit, I am like a man without strength. 5. I lie down among the dead, like the slain who lie in the grave, 6. Thou hast laid me in a deep pit, in darkness, in the depths. 7. Thy wrath lies heavy upon me, and with all thy waves thou dost press down upon me. 8. Thou hast taken my friends far from me; thou hast made me an utter abomination to them, I am shut in and cannot go out. 9. My eyes waste away with grief, I cry to thee, 0 Lord, every day; I stretch out my hands to thee. Wilt thou work wonders for the dead? shall the departed arise and praise thee? —52— 10 . 11. Shall thy kindness be recounted in the grave, thy faithfullness in hell? 12. Are thy wonders known in the darkness, and thy favor in the land of oblivion? 13. But I, 0 Lord, cry to thee, and at dawn my prayer comes to thee. 14. Why, O Lord, dost thou reject me, why dost thou hide thy face from me? 15. I am afflicted and subject to death from my youth, I have borne thy terrors and become weak. 16. Thy wrath has swept over me, and thy terrors have overcome me. 17. They surround me like water all day long; they encircle me completely. 18. Thou hast taken from me friend and comrade: shadows are my companions. 19. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 20. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Antiphon): Let my prayer come before thee. THOMAS AQUINAS (Lesson IV of the II Nocturn of the Feast of Corpus Christi The immense blessings bestowed by the divine mercy upon the Christian people confer upon it an inestimable dignity. There is not, nor ever was, a nation so great that has gods so nigh as our God is present to us. For the only-begotten Son of God wishing to make us partakers of His divinity, took upon Himself our nature, that being made man He might make men gods. And this body that He took from us He gave it wholly for our salvation. For He offered His own body to God the Father upon the altar of the cross as a victim for our reconcil- iation, and He shed His own blood both to redeem and cleanse us, that we, being bought back from a —54— wretched slavery, might be washed from all our sins. And, then, that the memory of so great a benefit might abide in us, He left His body to be our food and His blood to be our drink, to be re- ceived by the faithful under the species of bread and wine. THE HOLY TRINITY PREFACE (Priest and Congregation) It is truly meet and just,—right and profitable unto salvation,—that we should at all times and in all places—give thanks unto Thee, 0 holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God.—Who, with Thy only-begotten Son and the Holy Ghost,—art one God, one Lord :—not in the oneness of a single Person,—but in the Trinity of one substance.—For what we believe of Thy glory,—as Thou hast re- vealed it,—that we believe of Thy Son, and also of the Holy Ghost,—without any difference of in- equality.—That in the confession of the true and eternal Godhead, — distinction in persons, — unity in essence,—and equality in majesty may be adored. —Whom the angels and archangels,—the Cherubim also the Seraphim, do praise :—who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying: Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He Who cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. (Antiphon) : 0 Lord Psalm 20 1. 0 Lord, the king is glad because of thy strength, and because of thy help he rejoices exceedingly ! 2. Thou hast given him his heart’s desire, and denied him not the request of his lips. 3. For thou comest to meet him with choice bless- ings, thou hast set on his head a crown of fine gold. 59— 4. He asked life of thee: thou gavest to him length of days forever and ever. 5. Great is his glory because of thy help, majesty and splendor hast thou conferred upon him. 6. Thou hast made him blessed forever, thou hast gladdened him with joy in thy presence. 7. For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the favor of the Most High he shall not waver. 8. May thy hand come upon all thy enemies: may thy right hand reach all who hate thee. 9. Put them as in a fiery furnace, when thou dost appear. 10. May the Lord consume them in his wrath, and fire devour them. 11. Root out their offspring from the earth, and their descendants from among men. 12. Though they aim evil against thee, and plot, they shall not prevail; 13. For thou shalt put them to flight, thou shal< aim thy bow at their faces. 14. Arise, 0 Lord, in thy strength! we will sing and praise thy power. 15. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 16. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Antiphon) : 0 Lord, the king is glad because of thy strength. Which my lips uttered and my mouth prom- ised, when I was in distress. 3. I will offer thee burnt-offerings of fat sheep with the fat of rams: I will sacrifice bullocks and goats. 4. Come, hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what great things he has done for me ! 5. I cried to him with my mouth, and I praised him with my tongue. 6. (An Indulgence of three hundred days. Brief of June 10, 1923.) GOSPEL OF THE FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART (John 19, 31-37.) (Priest) At that time: The Jews (because it was the Parasceve,) that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day (for that was a great sabbath day) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. The soldiers therefore came; and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. But one of the soldiers with a spear opened His side, and immediately there came out blood and water. And he that saw it, hath given testimony : and his testimony is true. THE CONFITEOR (Priest and Congregation) I confess to Almighty God,—to blessed Mary ever Virgin,—to blessed Michael the Archangel, — to blessed John the Baptist,—to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,—and to all the Saints,—that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, — through my fault,—through my fault,—through my most grievous fault.—Therefore I beseech the blessed Mary ever Virgin,—blessed Michael the Archangel,—blessed John the Baptist,—the holy Apostles Peter and Paul,—and all the Saints,—to pray to the Lord for me. 63 (Antiphon) : Deliver me from my enemies, 0 Lord: in thee I hope. Psalm 142 1. 0 Lord, hear my prayer, listen to my entreaty according to thy faithfulness, answer me ac- cording to thy justice. 2. Bring not thy servant to trial, for in thy sight no man living is just. 3. For the enemy pursues me: he has crushed my life to the earth, he has made me to dwell in darkness like those long dead. 4. And my spirit faints within me; my heart within me grows numb. 5. I recall the days of old, I meditate on all thy deeds, I consider the works of thy hands. 6. I stretch out my hands to thee; my soul thirsts for thee like parched land. 7. Hasten to answer me, 0 Lord: for my spirit fails. 8. Hide not thy face from me, lest I become like those who go down into the pit. 9. Let me experience thy mercy speedily, for I trust in thee. 10. Show me the way in which I should walk, for to thee I lift up my soul. 11. Deliver me from my enemies, 0 Lord, in thee I hope. 12. Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God. 13. Thy spirit is good: may it guide me on level ground. For thy name’s sake, 0 Lord, save my life; in thy mercy bring me out of distress. —64— 14. 15. And in thy kindness cut off my enemies, and bring to naught all who afflict me: for I am thy servant. 16. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 17. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (Antiphon) : Deliver me from my enemies, O Lord; in thee I hope. (Antiphon) : Remember — Psalm 73 1. Why, 0 God, has thou cast us off forever, why does thy anger rage against sheep of thy pasture ? 2. Remember thy congregation, which thou didst establish of old, the tribe, which thou didst redeem as thy possession, Mount Sion, which thou hast made thy dwelling-place. 3. Direct thy steps to the irreparable ruins : the foe has laid waste everything in the sanctuary. 4. Thy foes have roared in the place of thy as- sembly, they have set up their emblems as trophies. 5. They are like those who swing the axe in a thicket, and now with axe and hammer they likewise smash its gates. 6. They have set thy sanctuary on fire, they have profaned the dwelling-place of thy name even to the ground. 7. They said to themselves, “Let us destroy them all at once; burn all God’s sanctuaries in the land.” 8. No longer do we see our signs, there Is no prophet; and there is not one among us who knows how long it will last. —65— 9. How long, 0 God, shall the foe revile? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name forever? 10. Why dost thou withdraw thy hand and keep thy right hand within thy bosom ? 11. Yet God is my king of old, who works salva- tion in the midst of the earth. 12. Thou didst divide the sea by thy might, didst shatter the heads of the dragons in the waters. 13. Thou didst crush the heads of Leviathan, thou gavest him as food to the monsters of the sea. 14. Thou didst bring forth fountains and streams : didst dry up ever flowing rivers. 15. Thine is the day and thine is the night; thou didst make firm the moon and the sun. 16. Thou hast set all the boundaries of the earth; summer and winter thou hast fashioned. 17. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 18. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. (Antiphon) : Thou, 0 Lord — Psalm 11 1. Help, 0 Lord! for faithful men are no more, faithfulness has died out among men. 2. Everyone tells lies to his neighbor, they speak with flattering lips and an insincere heart. 3. May the Lord destroy all deceitful lips, the boastful tongue, 4. Such as say : “We are heroes with our tongue; our lips are our own : who is lord over us ?” 5. “Because of the misery of the oppressed and the groaning of the poor, I will now arise, says the Lord: I will bring salvation to him who desires it.” 6. The words of the Lord are sincere words, as silver tried in fire, purged from dross, puri- fied seven times. 7. Thou, 0 Lord, wilt keep us, and preserve us from this generation forever. 8. Thou art my God : be gracious to me, 0 Lord, for I cry to thee constantly. 4. Gladden the soul of thy servant, for to thee, 0 Lord, I lift up my soul. 5. For thou, 0 Lord, art good and forgiving, rich in mercy towards all who call upon thee. 6. Hearken, O Lord, to my prayer, and heed the voice of my supplication. 7. In the day of my trouble I call upon thee, for thou wilt answer me. 8. There is none like thee among the gods, O Lord, and there are no works like thine: 9. All the nations, which thou hast made, shall come and worship thee, O Lord, and they shall glorify thy name. 10. For thou art great and workest wonders : thou alone art God. 11. Teach me, 0 Lord, thy way, that I may walk in thy truth; direct my heart, that it may fear thy name. 12. I will thank thee, O Lord, my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify thy name forever. 13. For thy mercy toward me has been great, and thou hast delivered my soul from the depths of hell. 68— 14. O God, insolent men have risen up against me, and a crowd of powerful men seek my life, and they do not set thee before their eyes. 15. But thou, O Lord, art a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, exceedingly kind and faithful. 16. Look upon me and be gracious to me; give thy strength to thy servant, and save the son of thy handmaid. 17. Give me a sign of thy favor, that they, who hate me, may see and be put to shame, be- cause thou, O Lord, hast helped me and com- forted me. 18. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; 19. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. And if I shall go and pre- pare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you also may be. And whither I go you know, and the way you know. Thomas saith to Him : Lord, we know not whither Thou goest, and how can we know the way? Jesus saith to him: I am the way and the truth and the life. No man cometh to the Father but by Me. If you had known Me, you would without doubt have known My Father also; and from henceforth you shall know Him, and you have seen Him. Philip saith to Him: Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us. Jesus saith to him : Have I been so long a time with you, and have you not known Me? Philip, he that seeth Me, seeth the Father also. How sayest thou : Show us the Father ? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not of Myself. But the Father Who abideth in me, He doth the works. (John 14, 1-10.) —70— And Jesus saith: If any man love Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and will make Our abode with him. He that loveth Me not, keepeth not My words. And the word which you have heard is not mine, but the Father’s Who sent Me. These things I have spoken to you, abiding with you. But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, Whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, what- soever I shall have said to you. Peace I leave with you: My peace I give unto you. Not as the world giveth do I give unto you. Let not vour heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid. (John 14, 23-27.) I am the true vine, and My Father is the hus- bandman. Every branch in Me that beareth not fruit. He will take away. And every one that beareth fruit, He will purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now you are clean by reason of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. He that abideth in Me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If any one abide not in Me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. If you abide in Me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask whatsoever you will, and it shall be done unto you. In this is My Father glorified, that you bring forth very much fruit, and become My disciples. As the Father hath loved Me, I also have loved —71— you. Abide in My love. If you keep my command- ments, you shall abide in My love; as I also have kept My Father’s commandments and do abide in His Love. (John 15, 1-10.) JESUS THE VERY THOUGHT OF THEE (Choir and Congregation) (Jesu, Dulcis Memoria) 1. Jesus the very thought of Thee, With sweetness fills my breast; But sweeter far Thy Face to see And in Thy presence rest. 2. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH O God, Who wouldst have all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of Thy truth; send, we pray, laborers into Thy harvest, and grant them grace with all boldness to speak Thy message; so that Thy word may run and be glorified, and all nations may know Thee the only God and Him Whom Thou hast sent, Jesus Christ Thy Son, our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee for ever and ever. Amen. FOR PEACE 0 God, from Whom are holy desires, right coun- sels, and just works, give to Thy servants that —73— peace which the world cannot give ; that our hearts may be disposed to obey Thy commandments, and the fear of enemies being removed, our times, by Thy protection, may be peaceful. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. FOR THE PRESIDENT We ask, almighty God, that Thy servant our President, who by Thy mercy has undertaken the government may also receive an increase of all virtues, so that being properly adorned therewith he may be enabled to avoid the evil of vice and may come happily to Thee, Who are the way, the truth and the life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. FOR A HAPPY DEATH Almighty and merciful God, Who bestowest on mankind both the remedies of health and the gifts of life everlasting, look mercifully upon us Thy servants, and refresh the souls which Thou hast made, that at the hour of their departure they may be found worthy to be borne to Thee, their maker, free from all stain of sin, by the hands of the holy angels. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. FOR PROTECTION OF SOUL AND BODY From all perils of soul and body defend us, O Lord, we beseech Thee, and by the intercession of the blessed and glorious ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of blessed Joseph, of Thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of blessed N. (here is named the Patron Saint) and all the Saints, graciously grant us safety and peace, that all adversities and errors being overcome, Thy Church may serve Thee in security and freedom. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. —74— IN ANY TRIBULATION Despise not, almighty God, Thy people crying out in their affliction; but for the glory of Thy name he appeased and help those in trouble. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. FOR ALL THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED 0 God, the Creator and Redeemer of all the faith- ful, grant to the souls of Thy servants and hand- maids the forgiveness of all their sins ; that through our prayers they may obtain that mercy which they have always desired. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. Amen. —75— ACT OF CONSECRATION OF THE HUMAN RACE TO THE SACRED HEART OR JESUS Most sweet Jesus,—Redeemer of the human race, —look down upon us,—humbly prostrate before Thy altar.—We are Thine and Thine we wish to be;—but to be more surely united with Thee, — behold each one of us freely consecrates himself today to Thy Most Sacred Heart.—Many indeed, have never known Thee,—many, too, despising Thy precepts, have rejected Thee.—Have mercy on them all, most merciful Jesus,—and draw them to Thy Sacred Heart.—Be Thou King, 0 Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken Thee, — but also of the prodigal children who have aban- doned Thee;—grant that they may quickly return to their Father’s house lest they die of wretched- ness and hunger.—Be Thou King of those who are deceived by erroneous opinions,—or whom discord keeps aloof,—and call them back to the harbor of truth and unity of faith,—so that soon there may be but one flock and one Shepherd.—Be Thou King of all those who are still involved in the darkness of idolatry or of Islamism,—and refuse not to draw them all into the light and kingdom of God. —Turn Thine eyes of mercy toward the children of that race,—once Thy chosen people.—Of old they called down upon themselves the Blood of the Savior;—may It now descend upon them a laver of redemption and of life.—Grant, 0 Lord, to Thy Church assurance of freedom and immunity from harm;—give peace and order to all nations,—and make the earth resound from pole to pole with one cry:—Praise to the Divine Heart that wrought our salvation;—to It be glory and honor for- ever. Amen. (Issued on October 17, 1925, by His Holiness, Pope Pius XI for the annual consecration of the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the —76— Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ King, celebrated on the last Sunday of October. Amen. AN ACT OF REPARATION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS Sweet Savior Jesus,—Whose boundless love for men is repaid with blackest ingratitude,—so for- getful, so heedless, so scornful of Thy great good- ness:—behold us prostrate before Thine altar, — seeking with special tribute of honor to atone for the sinful indifference of men—and for the out- rages heaped from every side upon Thy most loving Heart. — And yet, mindful that we also more than once — have been guilty of like unworthy deeds,—we are stirred to deepest sorrow and therefore we be- seech Thy mercy,—first of all, upon ourselves. — We are eager and resolved to make amends not only for our own transgressions—but also for the sins of those who, straying far from the path of salvation—either will not follow Thee as Shepherd and Leader,—or trampling under foot their bap- tismal vows—have shaken off the easy yoke of Thy holy law. We seek, O Lord, to atone for this wickedness in all its hideous forms.—In particular we purpose to expiate immodesty and shamefulness in behavior and dress,—the numberless snares that are laid for the corruption of innocent minds,—the breaking of Holy Days,—the horrible blasphemies uttered against Thee and Thy saints,—the revilings flung at Thy Vicar on earth and at Thy Priesthood,—the slights which are put upon Thee in the very Sacra- ment of Thy Divine Love,—the frightful sacrileges by which It is profaned,—and lastly the wrongs —79— that are publicly committed by nations—in defying the authority—and in violating the rights of the Church—which Thou didst establish. Would that with our blood we might wash away such awful crimes ! — The more earnestly, O Lord, as reparation to Thy Divine Honor, we offer Thee the selfsame satisfaction — which once Thou didst offer on the Cross to Thy Father, and which daily is renewed upon the Altar, — beseeching Thee to receive it together with the expiations of Thy Vir- gin Mother, — of all Thy Saints, and of all devout Christians. — From the bottom of our hearts we promise, with the help of Thy grace — to compen- sate as far as in us lies for our evil doings, for the sins of others — and for our coldness and theirs toward Thee and Thy most generous love. — This we purpose to do by unyielding firmness of faith, by pureness of life, — by perfect observance of the Gospel law, above all, the precept of charity. — We promise to hinder as best we can any further offenses against Thee. — We will bring, moreover, — as many as possible into Thy holy fellowship. — Receive, we beseech Thee, Jesus most kind, — through the intercession of Blessed Mary ever Vir- gin, Mother of Reparation, — our willing homage of expiation. — Grant us the gift of perseverance — and through it keep us ever faithful to our duty — and to Thy service, — so that we all may come at last to that blessed homeland — where Thou to- gether with the Father and the Holy Spirit — livest and reignest God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Issued on May 9, 1928, by His Holiness, Pope Pius XI, to be recited each year on the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
