Turner, as is well known, painted many pictures in rivalry with great painters, such as Claude. Ruysdael, Stot- hart and others, and many plates in the " Liber Studiorum " are examples of his having- pitted himself against his pre- decessors. It is submitted that the pictures — now by a strange for- tune shown side by side — are another example of the same practice on Turner's part, no such port as " Ruysdael " hav- ing ever existed. It is also somewhat remarkable that both the paintings by Turner, Nos. 14 and i^, were at one time in the Bicknell collection, and were sold at Christie's in 1862.
