 WHERE is* Campobello? How does
one get there? . What can one do
there ? These are a few of the many
questions, which one hears asked constantly, in
regard to Campobello, and although there are
many people who have already found the an-
swers for themselves, there are still a great num-
ber of eager questioners who have heard of the
place, but whose knowledge of it goes no fur-
ther ; and for the benefit of these, this little book
 was written. _ ..:... .,_. -,,^,./,,, -, ■ ■ ; .;.

There is ap indescribable charm in a new

summer resort, especially when one finds, not
brass bands, electric lights, pavilions and the
like, but ^reen fields, blue sky, cool, fragrant,
spicy woods, and fresh, invigorating air, the
breath of which means a new lease of life.
Those in search of the former must go else-
where, but those who seek " fresh woods and
pastures new" are welcomed to Campobello's
hospitable shores with open arms. First of all,
 then,

 Campobello Island lies in Passamaquoddy
Bay, about seventy miles north-east of Mount
Desert, and is nearly three miles from Eastport,
 in the State of Maine.

Campobello Island is under the Canadian
Government, although tl =i land is owned by the
Campobello Land Company, which is composed
of several well-known Boston and New York
 gentlemen.

Fine steamers of the International Line leave
Commercial Wharf, Boston, at 8.30 a. m., and
Portland at 5.00 the same evening, arriving at
Campobello the next morning, at 8 or 9 o'clock.
By taking the 12.30 p. m. train via Boston &
Maine or Eastern Railroad, one can reach Port-
land in ample time to take the steamer there.
 Baggage checked through to Campobello,

By Rail. Take Pullman train via B. & M.
 R. R. for St. Andrew^s morning or evening,
connecting there with steamer ''Rose Standish/'
which makes the run to Campobello (15 miles)
in one hour. The morning train from Boston
reaches St. Andrews the same evening. For
 railroad time-table see daily papers.

The elegant new steamers built for the Inter-
natiopal Line, are commodious and swift. Their
appointments are excellent, and service admir-
 able.

The beautiful ocean steamer " Olivette " will
run between Boston, Bar Harbor and Canipo-
bello as last year, leaving Boston Saturday after-
noon and Bar Harbor Sunday morning, arriving
at Campobello the same afternoon, and returning
 Monday morning.

It is expected that the New York and Portland
Steamship Co. will run from New York to St.
John twice a week, touching at Bar Harbor and
 Campobello.

As Campobello is about ten miles long, from
two to three miles wide, and covered with a
dense growth of trees, it may readily be sup-
posed that there are beautiful drives and walks
in all directions. Those who are fond of horse-
back riding will find the roads and bridle-paths
at Campobello, delightful. There is plenty of
good sailing, boating and fishing, with skillful
skippers who may be hired by the hour or day.

d^

Birch-bark canoes, with Indian guides, may be
engaged at reasonable rates. There are several
good tennis courts in the hotel grounds ; billiard
aivd pool tables, and bowling alleys in connec-
tion with the hotel. In fact, one can always
find pleasure and occupation at Campobello.

The hotels are pleasant summer homes, with
bright, sunny bed-rooms with open Hre^ for
 those who wish them.

The parlors are cosy and comfortaLL, where
one can chat, read or play vv^^ist, before liugN?
open fires. The table appointments itrt taste-
tul, and the food is well cooked and well servr'^.

Applications for rooms, for the season of 1890,
may be made to T. A. Barker, care of

 Alex. S. Porter,

General Manager of the Campobello Company,
