DUBLIN: PRINTED AT THE UNIVERSITY PRESS, BY PONSONBY AND MURPHY. 1878. smug" ft Wricks Wf^aoml ns of the Clergy of the Cathedral. I. — The Annual Income. This is derived from — 1. Annual Subscriptions and Collections. 2. Offertory and Box Collections. 3. Diocesan Contributions. 1. The Annual Subscriptions consist in great measure of contri- butions from persons wishing to be qualified for registration as Vestrymen by an annual subscription of/'i from an accustomed member of the congregation, or of £$ from any other adult member of the Church of Ireland. The Cathedral Board have exerted themselves to increase the number of such subscribers, but they have barely succeeded in filling up the gaps caused by the removal of old supporters. The amount received annually under this head has been as follows : — 1 as follows : — 1873, • . .£422 3 1874, . • • 359 6 1875, • • • 3° 6 J 3 1876, . 310 10 2 1877, . . . 346 2 These figures include some small contributions collected by the cards of a few friends of the Cathedral. 2. The Offertory and Box Collections form the most important source of income. They have varied much from year to year, producing on an average ^690 per annum, in addition to the special collections made for pious and charitable purposes outside the Cathedral. When the average amount of the Sunday Offertory is considered in connexion with the numbers who attend the services, it appears that nearly half the worshippers, especially at the Sunday afternoon services, leave the Church without contri- ( 7 ) buting anything at all. Much difficulty is found by the collectors in bringing the Offertory plates within the reach of all at crowded festival services, but boxes are placed in different parts of the Cathedral, and one is held at the door. It is only reasonable that those who wish to avail themselves of the Cathedral services should take some trouble to contribute to the necessary cost. The amount of the Offertory collections during the last five years has been : — Year. For the Cathedral Funds. For External Objects. Diocesan Contributions. — When the Cathedral was made a National Institution, and a right was given to each united diocese in turn to elect a Canon to a vacant stall, it was felt that every diocese in Ireland became interested in the maintenance of the Cathedral ; and the several dioceses, as their turn for election came round (and some of them before that time), and as the state of their diocesan funds permitted, have contributed to the annual income. The Annual Income is also entitled to a fee of £ \ upon the installation of each newly appointed Canon. The Annual Current Expenses include : — (i). Stipends for Clerical Vicars and Minor Canons (as they may be appointed), and of Choirmen — a charge which will continually increase as vacancies occur in the ranks of annui- tants. (2). Salaries for the Choristers and the cost of their Grammar School and Musical Education. (3). Salaries for the Cathedral Officers, most of whom compounded their annuities, leaving balances in the capital of the Stipend Fund, and receiving salaries for the continued discharge of their duties. (4). Repairs of the fabric, Heating and Light. (5). The various Miscellaneous Expenses of the Cathedral. This Fund consists of the balances left on compounding out of the Commutation capital of the late Precentor — The Most Rev. Lord Plunket, d. d. ; the late Chancellor — the Rev. E. W. Whately; and the late Rev. Charles E. Wright, B.D., who was a clerical Vicar and Preacher. The capital, which amounts to ^"6697 12s. ^.d., is still subject to the claims of the commuting clergy throughout Ireland, and cannot be drawn from the hands of the Representative Body. The interest, amounting to ^271 igs. od., is placed at the disposal of the Cathedral Board for Cathedral sustentation purposes, and has generally been added to the capital of the Stipend Fund. The annuities extin- guished by composition amounted to ^"542 6s. 2d. * The great reduction of the Stipend Fund in 1876 arose out of the transfer to the Cathedral of an annuity, on account of which a sum of £"2326 ior. $d. was paid out of this Fund, and a sum of £"2525 IU. §d. was added to the Cathedral Commutation capital {vide p. 13). ( 12 Deanery Endowment Fund. In April 1874, the General Synod authorised the Representative Body to allocate the interest on a sum of ^"5000 — being a part of the unappropriated balance of the Private Endowment Fund — towards the endowment of the Deanery of St. Patrick's, provided that within a year a like sum should be raised for this purpose. This condition was subsequently modified into the expression of a hope that every effort should be made to secure an adequate income for future Deans. The Fund, as it now stands, consists of the contributions received since the account was opened, together with the accumulation of interest thereon, and on the ^"5000 during the same period. The progress of the Fund may be traced as follows : — Credited in Contributions. Interest. The commutation capital connected with the Cathedral con- sists of what now remains of the commutation money of such of the Clergy, Vicars-Choral, and Members of the Choir as were awarded life annuities under the Irish Church Act. The sum originally received by the Representative Body amounted to £b$,i']3 9$- 5^-, chargeable with annuities amounting to ^5165 11s. 8d. ; but this has been greatly reduced (1) by com- position, £2910 19s. 3d. having been paid to compounders, and £6697 12s. \d. transferred to Clerical Composition Balances Fund {vide p. 11 ); (2) by advances to the annuitants on terms mutually advantageous to them and to the Cathedral, rendering this capital more secure — advances amounting to ^10,700, having extin- guished annuities amounting to ^"846 3s. id. ; and (3) by the payment of the annuities; for while the interest to the 31st Dec, 1876, amounted to /"8001 gs. yl., the annuities paid during the same period amounted to ^"17,467 11s. lod. The annuities ( 13 ) hargeable have, in addition, been reduced to the extent of "261 3J. 3d. by the deaths of annuitants, viz. : — Ven. C. Wolseley, Archdeacon of Glandelagh ; Dr. Francis Robinson, Lay Vicar-Choral ; Mr. William Topham, Choirman ; o that the balance on the 31st December, 1876, was ^37,924 6s. 8d., nd the annuities then payable amounted to ^"3637 igs. zd. Early in 1876 Sir Arthur E. Guinness, Bart., m. p., and Edward Cecil Guinness, Esq., d. l., informed the Cathedral Board of their intention to contribute a sum of /'soo per annum, to be expended in such a manner as to be generally beneficial to the Cathedral without relieving the Members of the Church of Ireland of the duty of maintaining their National Cathedral in the ordinary way. At the request and with the assistance of the generous donors, a scheme was drawn up with a view to the increased de- velopment of a School of Sacred Music in connexion with the Cathedral, and chiefly by means of the Choristers' School and the Amateur Choir. The improvements provided for included the following : — 1. Removal of the Grammar School to better premises. 2. Accommodation for boarding Choristers and Probationers. 3. Extra Choristers/lips, at increased salaries. 4. An Exhibition in Trinity College, connected with the Gram- mar School. 5. Better Instruction in Singing for Choristers and Amateur Choir. 6. Free Instruction in Piano and Organ for six boys. 7. Appointment of three Choral Exhibitioners and three Choral Assista?its, from the Amateur Choir, to receive special in- struction in Singing, and to assist in the Choir on certain specified occasions. 8. Appointment of extra Choirmen — one Tenor and one Bass. 9. Establishment of a Weekly Rehearsal. A Sub-Committee was appointed to carry into effect this scheme, and their efforts have already been attended with great success, as is evidenced by the great improvement during the past year in all the services of the Cathedral, but especially in those of Sunday morning and Saturday afternoon. This is only an earnest of what ( 15 ) may be expected from the continuous operation of the scheme, by which so great advantages are made available for the Choristers and the Members of the Amateur Choir. It is to be understood that the aid thus given to the Cathedral is limited to the objects above specified, which are not included in the ordinary work of the Cathedral, for the support of which the Board must, as usual, depend upon the voluntary contribution of the Members of the Church of Ireland.
