 FONTS OF LETTERS. 
 
 The Letters are arranged in Fonts, same style as printer's fonts and sold that way, or by the piece. They are 
 cheaper by the Font. 
 
 A Font is a sheet or collection containing all the letters of the alphabet, characters, &c, dots and commas to 
 match the same size and style. The Letters are arranged so as to contain more of such letters as are used most. For 
 instance, there would be four or five A's, E's, Q's, etc*, and only one or two Z's, X's, Q's, etc. 
 
 The numerals are arranged in fonts containing only numerals from I to 0, containing proportionately more, 0*Sy 
 I's, 2's, 3's, as these are used most.

 INTRODUCTORY REMARKS. 
 
 It will be observed that the face or gloss side of the Letter contains nothing but the 
 leaf and colors forming the Letter to be transferred, whereas the back or reverse side of the 
 paper has the exact contour or outline print of the Letter, registering exactly with the 
 Letter on the face of the paper. In addition to that, the contour or out line print has a top 
 and base line, also main space lines and intermediate space lines. The top or base 
 lines will be a perfect guide in laying the letters, so that they will appear in a perfectly 
 Straight line after they are transferred. The main spaoe lines will be a guide in spac- 
 ing the ordinary or square letters, such as B, C, D, etc., whereas the intermediate space 
 lines will guide in properly spacing the Lap Letters, such as A, F, J, ete. Intermediate 
 space lines are also used on the Square Letters whenever they are followed by a Lap 
 Letter, BA, CY, etc., so as to bring them closer together and make the spacings perfect. 
 Inside of the out-line print will also be found a small number, which refers to the size and 
 style of the Transfer Letter, thus No. 5 is a \% inch Roman Letter ; No. 11 a 3 inch Egyp- 
 tian Letter, etc. There is also found inside the out-line print and below the number refer- 
 red to, a small letter, which refers to the coloring and execution of the Letter, thus A 
 denotes that it is a gold Letter with red blended shade ; E, that it is a gold Letter with a 
 double blue shade, etc. These small numbers and letters in the contour print will therefore 
 avoid any confusion as to coloring, style, etc., of the same size Letters, by using letters of 
 the same number and letter to form a certain name or line of lettering. 
 
 DIRECTIONS FOR ARRANGING. 
 
 Having selected the letters of a certain kind and style to form a word or line of lettering, 
 all the letters of which mast be of the same style and coloring, thus 5 A or 11 D, etc., — then 
 proceed to measure the width or length of the space you propose to letter, and arrange the 
 Letters on a table or board in their order, in which they are to appear when transferred. 
 By taking the height of the Letters, you can find the proper place for the horizontal base 
 line, and by measuring their length find the place of beginning«and ending, thus: 
 
 Now you are ready to begin to transfer the Letters, which should be done according to 
 the established Rules for transferring, or according to the Directions for Transferring 
 hereinafter given. In laying the Letters on for transferring (as stated in Paragraph 3 of 
 of Directions,) care must be taken to lay them so that the base lines of the Letters are true 
 to the horizontal ^ine above indicated, and the space lines of the Letters are close together, 
 or at equal distances from each other, as the spacing may require. 
 
 Materials for Transferring to Wood, 
 rietal, Paint, Etc. 
 
 1. PALM'S TRANSFER CEMENT, or Quick Drying Rubbing Varnish. Palm-.Tran.. 
 
 fer Cement preferable. 2- A Pencil or Brush for applying the Cement. 
 3. A Soft Sponge and Basin of Water. (Waim Water Preferable.) 4. Chamois-Skin. 
 
 5. Rubber Roller. 6. Benzine. 
 
 Directions for Transferring to Wood, Metal, Paint, &c. 
 
 1. Give the face of the Letter to be transferred a smooth, thin coat of our Transfer Cement, 
 being careful to cover all the parts of the Letter that are intended to be transferred. 
 
 When our Transfer Cement is not at hand, quick-drying rubbing varnish may be used in 
 place of Cement; but, in all cases, a thin coating only of cement or varnish must be given. 
 
 2. After having given the face of the Letter (that is. the colored or silver side of it) the 
 coating of cement or varnish, as described in paragraph 1, then let the coating become 
 thoroughly tacky or sticky before laying the Letter on the place to be lettered. 
 
 Transfer Cement dries very quickly and will become tacky and sticky in a few minutes, 
 whereas varnish requires a longer time before it becomes tacky. Of course in dry and 
 hot weather either cement or varnish will dry quicker than in moist or cold weather. 
 3- Now lay the letter (face downward) on the place to be lettered, and roll it down smoothly 
 and solidly with the rubber roller, so that all the parts adhere well. 
 
 4. Special care must be taken not to lay the Letter on the place to be lettered while the coat 
 of cement or varnish is still moist and soft, and before it has become thoroughly sticky or 
 tacky, because the soft or moist coat of cement or varnish will cause the Letter to crack 
 and peel off, and thus make a defective transfer. 
 
 5. Having rolled the Letter down well with the roller, so that all parts adhere well to the 
 place to be lettered, dampen the back of the Letter slightly with a moist sponge and 
 roll the Letter down a little more with the rubber roller. 
 
 Now saturate the paper (back of the Letter) thoroughly with sponge and water, and 
 let it soak for a few minutes, after which the paper will slide off easily, leaving the 
 letter on the place to be lettered. Should the paper not slide off easily, then apply more 
 water until the paper separates easily from the transfer. Warm or hot water will faci- 
 litate the quick saturation of the paper. 
 
 6. After the paper is removed, wash all the gum from the face of the Letter, and press the 
 Letter on well with a moist sponge or chamois skin, and then dry it. 
 
 7. To remove the stains of Transfer Cement or varnish around the Letter after it has been 
 transferred, put a few drops of benzine on a moist chamois skin, and wash around the 
 Letter until the stains are removed. 
 
 8. Now the Letter is ready to receive the finishing coat of varnish, which will protect it 
 and make it look glossy and bright. The finishing coat of varnish, however, should 
 not be applied until the following day, or until at least several hours alter the transfer 
 has been made. It is not absolutely necessary to give the transferred Letter a finishing 
 coat of varnish, because the transfer will stand without it. 
 
 LARGE LETTERS. 
 
 In transferring large Letters, it is sometimes difficult to get them on smoothly and 
 without blisters, but these troubles can be remedied very easily by proceeding in every par- 
 ticular according to the foregoing directions, with this addition : 
 
 After the letter has been coated with cement or varnish, and the coating has become 
 thoroughly tacky and sticky, as described in paragraphs 1 and 2, and before laying the Letter 
 on the place to be lettered, as described in paragraph 3,— take a wet sponge and wash over 
 he face side of the Letter, then lay the Letter face downward on the place to be lettered 
 and roll it down well with the rubber roller, being careful to roll out all the moisture be- 
 tween ,the Letter and the place to be lettered, and causing all the parts to adhere well. 
 ~ After that, proceed as stated in paragraph 4, etc. # 
 
 WNOTE-One of the SPECIAL POINTS to observe in order to obtain a PER- 
 FECT TRANSFER, is to let the Coating of CEMENT OR VARNISH BECOME 
 THOROUGHLY TACKS' AND STICKY before laying the Letter on the place te 
 be lettered.

 1. PALM'S TRANSFER CEMENT, or Quick- 
 
 Drying Rubbing Varnish. Palm's 
 Cement preferable. 
 
 2. A Pencil or Brash for applying the 
 
 Cement. 
 
 3- A Soft Sponge and Basin of Water.

 Directions for Transferring to Glass. 
 
 1. Give the face of the letter to be transferred (that is, the colored side) a smooth, thin coat 
 of our Cement i carefully covering all parts of the letter, going slightly beyond the outline of 
 the letter. When our Cement is not at hand, quick-drying rubbing varnish may be used in 
 place of cement; but, in all cases, a thin coating only of cement or varnish must be given. 
 The stains of cement or varnish around the ietter cannot be removed after it is transferred, 
 without injury to the transfer; but they will not be visible after the "backing" hereinafter 
 described has been put on, as per paragraph 7. 
 
 2. After having given the face of the letter (that is, the colored side of it) the coating of 
 cement or varnish, as described in paragraph 1, let the coating become thoroughly tacky or 
 sticky, Cement dries very quickly and will become tacky and sticky in a few minutes, 
 whereas varnish requires a longer time before it becomes tacky. Of course in dry or hot 
 weather, either cement or varnish will dry quicker than in moist or cold weather. 
 
 3. After the letter has been coated with cement or varnish, and the coating has become 
 thoroughly tacky or sticky, and before laying the letter on the place to be lettered, take a wet 
 sponge and wash over the face- side of the letter, then lay the letter face downward on the 
 place to be lettered, and roll it down well with a rubber roller, being careful to roll out all 
 the moisture between the letter and the glass, and causing all parts to adhere well to the glass, 
 solidly and smoothly— carefully rolling out all blisters and air-bubbles. 
 
 4. Special care must be taken not to lay the letter on the glass while the coat of cement or 
 varnish is still moist and soft, and before it has become thoroughly tacky and sticky be- 
 cause the soft or moist coat of cement or varnish will cause the letter to crack and peel off 
 and thus make a defective transfer. 
 
 5. Having rolled the letter down well with the roller so that all parts adhere well to the 
 glass now dampen the back of the letter slightly with a moist sponge, and roll the letter down 
 a little more witn the rubber roller. Now saturate the paper (back of the letter) thoroughly 
 with sponge and water, and let it soak for a few minutes, after which the paper will slide off 
 easily, leaving the letter on the glass. Should the paper not slide off easily, then apply more 
 water unhl the paper separates easily fr P m the transfer. Warm or hot water will facilitate 
 the quick saturation of the paper. 
 
 6 After the paper is removed, wash all the gummy substance off the letter by pressing (not 
 rubbing) with a moist spongeorchamoisskin, being careful «<* to rub uptheedgesof theletter- 
 then dry it with a chamois skin by pressing. '

 THESE Letters are manufactured in ) ure Aluminum Gold and Silver Leaf and finest Oil 
 colors, and are equal, if not superior, to the ,est hand- painted work. Each letter is 
 provided on the back of the paper with our PATENT SPACE and CONTOUR LINES, 
 so that ANY person can space any word perfectly and symmetrically, and according to 
 the established rules. These Letters are manufactured for Transferring to Wood, Metal, 
 Paint, etc., or to the inside of Glass. 
 
 New styles and sizes will be added as the demand may warrant. 
 These Letters may be transferred in straight or curved lines. 
 
 The letters are sold singly or by the font, arranged on the basis of the printer's type
