Many of the books are out of print and can be had only thro, ugh second-hand dealers. These books are indicated by a star. Some of the books are published by the authors, others by some local publisher. These, also, can usually be had only through dealers in second-hand books. Many historical sermons and addresses are to be had in pamphlet form. In each county there are usually one ,or more persons interested in local history who can furnish much information regarding the historical publications relating to the locality. So far as the information can be had, this list will give the title, author, date of publication and probable cost of the books mentioned. If all this information is not available, then all that is available will be given in the hope that some one in the locality of which the" book treats can give the remainder. So far as practicable, a brief annotation is given. In many cases this can not be furnished as the books are not accessible. It should be borne in mind that the price of out-of-print books varies greatly, not only from time to time, but at the same time with different dealers, and also with different editions and the con- dition of the books, so the prices named are only an approximation. It is not expected that any one school will make many purchases from this list, nor is it advised that it do so. It is hoped that each secondary school will get one or more books giving the history of its locality and a few of a general character. To aid in the selection two lists are given, one containing books treating of the State as a whole, or at least of a considerable portion of the State, and the other containing books that are purely local in their character. The latter list is arranged by counties. b UNIVERSITY OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK Many of the county histories, especially those published from the late sixties to the early eighties, are largely the biographies of men of the locality, the greater part of them men of no importance historically. These works usually contain one or two chapters of local history that are fairly well written, some of them exceedingly well written, and are worth having on account of this historical matter. Not much is given in the way of annotation of this class of county histories. It amounts to . some introductory history, biographical sketches and portraits of such residents of the county as were willing to pay for the same. Some of these are men of account locally, a few are men of state or national reputation, others are of no interest whatever so far as history is concerned. GENERAL This list makes no pretense of even approaching completeness. It includes some of the better works relating to the general history of the State.
