'^T'HIS little l>ook is written for the purpose of letting the people know
what the Negro people of Boston are doing. Fifty years ago, a
noted professor made,the ]>rophecy that the Negroes of the United Stales
would never be self-supporting, nor in any way able to compete with their
fairer brothers.
This book will now demonstrate that the prophecy is quite untrue.
It makes known in a small way what we have accomplished, but it does
not contain one-third of the Negro enterprises that are now in operation
in Boston. In this little book I've tried to give a fair sample of the leading
places of business aud professions. This is only a brief review of Boston
and Vicinity.
This being my first issue in this line of work, I give but a small esti¬
mate of the Negro citizens, but I hope you will en joy this little book, and
that it may prove a source of pleasure and valuable information. And
you who purchase one of my books will help me on to success for a greater
work I wish to do, for the uplift of the American Negro.
Look for Issue No. 2, which will tell the story of its Evolution,
Industrial aud Scientific Advancement, etc., giving a larger glimpse into
the lives of the progressive Negro people, and a graphic review of Boston.
