This desk, astde of being a beautiful specimen of antique furniture, ts of unusual historical interest, from the fact that it belonged to Abinell Stevenson, a prontinent English gentle- man, residing in London, at whose house Benjamin Franklin resided the greater portion of the time when he was in London as Agent for the Colomes. Through the courtesy of Mr. Steven- son this desk was put at the disposal of Dr. Franklin on ac- count of the very great correspondence he had to carry on with the Colonies during the Stamp Act troubles gust preceding the Revolution. Tt would be impossible for me to enumerate the many important documents and letters which eminated from this desk under the hand of Franklin. Franklin's intunacy with the Stevenson family was so pleasant and cordial that at the death of Mr. Stevenson the daughter, Mary, looked upon him asa father, and both her and her mother carried on a volumtinous correspondence with Dr. Franklin during his mis- ston from the United Colonies to Paris and Passy, and up to the last day of his life. I venture to say that no more tnter- esting velic of Benjamin Franklin has ever been offered for sale. The desk was presented by Mr. Stevenson to a member of the family of the present owner. Affidavit of genuineness will be given the purchaser. 12 Ink-Stand presented by Benjamin Franklin to Mary Stevenson. 163 Solid Silver Ink-Stand. Open-work Chippendale design, 170 with pen and wafer-tray, with glass ink-stand, and sand-box, with silver tops, and with sliding silver writing tablet, upon which Franklin caused to be engraved the following, “The Gift of Benjamin Franklin L.L.D., F.R.S. To Mary Stevenson.” This very handsome piece of antique silverware ts a relic of unusual interest of the great Philosopher. The recipient always took great interest in Dr. Franklin's philosophical researches, and carried on a voluminous correspondence on those subjects. In the letters of Benjamin Franklin, pub- lished by the late Prof. Sinyth, will be found many quoted letters from him to her on those subjects. He knew her from early childhood up till the time of his death, and she formed such an attachment for him that after her father’s death she mnvariably appealed to him for advice in all the important affairs of her life. The ink-stand was presented by Mrs. Stevenson to a member of the family of the present owner. An affidavit of genuineness will be given the purchaser. SEE PLATE.
