Porcelain completely coated inside and out with a rich old gold glaze, minutely flecked with bright gold specks. Delicately etched with Greek fret and leaf pattern round shoulder at base of neck and fret under mouth, space between, ornamented with an arabesque of flowers and leaves. Above centre bead dots enclosed in tiny circles and under bead archaic lines surround the body. Over body glaze is a covering of brilliant gold glaze bringing out in subdued lines the delicate ornament and making a most attractive and exceptional object. The present tapestry shows the Emperor commending his son to the care of two philosophers. The Emperor is represented standing in front of his throne, his son to his left, while the two philos- ophers stand to the left of the composition. This composition of life-size figures shows the influence of Rubens, who introduced a new style into tapestry design. A characteristic detail is the carefully rendered colorful Persian rug spread in front of the throne. The border is typically Flemish, 17th century, with fruit garlands suspended and held by amorini; in the middle of - the side borders are Renaissance consoles on which a parrot and 120 a falcon are seated. The predominant colors are tan and blue, with touches of purple and red. Six borders, one with undulated stems on black, two with barber pole stripes, two with angular floral vines on blue. The main border with a row of Cashmere pal- mettoes in delicate pastel shades on deep red ground. The centre field has a background of typical Kuba design, straight stems with attached rosace flowers and angular arabesque leaves on deep blue ground. A few Cashmere palmettoes, characteristic of Baku rugs, are intermingled in the Kuba design. The delicate combination of light tan, cream-white, and pale blue is also char- acteristic of Baku. On this background are star medallions with stepped outline, the central one light tan and pale blue, the outer one deep red. Each medallion shows a central rosace, smaller flowers and six seated birds. A quarter of the central rosace is repeated in each corner.
