AUCTIONEER MANAGERS 1894 R. JOHN WOLFE was an enthusiastic lover and connoisseur of fine paintings when few people in this country had the taste or knowledge to take advan- tage of what was good in art. He was widely known, both here and abroad, for his taste and judgment in art matters, and was largely instru-, mental in directing his cousin, Miss Catherine Wolfe, in the selection of the magnificent collection of pictures which she bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum. Mr. Wolfe’s reputation as a good judge was established when his first collection was sold in 1863, bringing the large sum, at that time, of $114,000. <@ Almost immediately after his first sale he began to form a second collection, to which he devoted much time and knowledge, and which was sold April 5 and 6, 1882, realizing $132,000. _<@ Again more pictures were pur- chased to live with for the rest of his life. This final collection is now offered for sale at auction by order of his executors. It is needless to say that each painting is worthy of careful attention as a choice example of the artist represented, and that many of them are extremely difficult to get at this time. “@ The collection will be sold entirely without reserve ; no pictures have been added or withdrawn.
