PECKHAM’S PRIVATE GALLERY OF VALUABLE PAINTINGS BY AMERICAN AND FOREIGN MASTERS TO BE SOLD AT UNRESTRICTED PUBLIC SALE ON THE EVENING OF TUESDAY, MARCH 29ruH BEGINNING AT 8.15 O’CLOCK AT THE AMERICAN ART GALLERIES MADISON SQUARE SOUTH ILLUSTRATED CATALOGUE OF THE PRIVATE GALLERY OF VALUABLE PAINTINGS BY AMERICAN AND FOREIGN MASTERS BELONGING TO MR. W. G. PECKHAM OF WESTFIELD, NEW JERSEY PeebE sOLD AL UNRESTRICTED: PUBLIC SALE ON TUESDAY EVENING, MARCH 297Tu, 1921 err AMPERICAN ART GALLERIES THE SALE TO BE CONDUCTED BY MR. THOMAS E. KIRBY AND HIS ASSISTANT, MR. OTTO BERNET, OF THE AMERICAN ART ASSOCIATION, MANAGERS NEW YORK CITY THE AMERICAN ART ASSOCIATION DESIGNS ITS CATALOGUES AND DIRECTS ALL DETAILS OF ILLUSTRATION TEXT AND TYPOGRAPHY INTRODUCTORY NOTE A well-known New York Collector who bought many pictures from American artists when he was almost alone as a purchaser in the home field of art of his day, once said, “All my pictures are genuine with no ifs or ands about it, for I have seen the artists painting them. I know them and visit them and see the pictures I buy in their own studios. There is no better guarantee than personal, direct inter- course.” It has been the same way with Mr. William G. Peckham, the owner of the present collection. There are some American pictures among the works and he knew the artists personally, but a difference to be noted is that he knew and visited many of the European artists who are represented in this collection. The acquisitions have been made throughout a series of years when he spent his vacations on the other side of the water. There are pictures by Dutch, French, Span- ish, Portuguese, Belgian, German, Russian, Italian and British artists purchased direct from the painters in Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Petrograd, Tangiers and other cities, and the written and printed records, carefully preserved, include personal letters, receipted bills giving titles, printed criticisms concerning the works and cata- logues of exhibitions wherein some of the pictures were shown. In the International Studio and other art publications Mr. Peckham has written, sometimes as a critic of art, sometimes as a narrator of his experiences, interesting articles about the painters of some of his pictures, notably Johannes Henricus Jurres, the Dutch painter “who first did hard work in Holland and later spent years of faithful study in Spain and who paints men that are quite human and unartificial. . . His subjects are from the Bible, Cervantes, Shakespeare and the everyday life of common folk.” There are nine or ten compositions by Jurres in the collection, including sevetal of his most celebrated works. Others are owned by collectors elsewhere, as in Montreal, and his pic- tures are “specialized” as are those by Zuloaga, the brilliant Spanish artist, and those of Le Sidaner, the talented Frenchman, by one of our discriminating art dealers. The range of Mr. Peckham’s Collection is very wide. It exemplhi- fies catholicity itself. The works by artists of to-day are not the only ones that distinguish it. There are also good examples of the English School of the XVIII Century, portraits by Hoppner, Watson Gordon, Gainsborough Dupont, Allan Ramsay, Opie, Etty and others; by other painters of the earlier periods: Simon de Vos, Paulus Moreelse, Cor- nelis Janssens, Pourbus, Greuze and Zucchero. Coming back to the moderns, Dagnan-Bouveret, Carolus-Duran, Boughton, Cottet, Kever, Madrazo, Roybet, E. A. Abbey and William M. Chase are well represented, and by John La Farge there is a picture of special note, “The Jet d’EKau,” a nude female figure of charming grace in a setting of a grotto of the South Sea Islands. The well-known water color by the same artist is also here, “The Pied Piper of Hamelintown.” By the men of today, both abroad and at home, there are pictures of varying importance and interest. Among these are painters in the different countries visited by Mr. Peckham, younger men not yet quoted in the price lists, such as Numa Gillet with his “Nocturne,” Gonsalo Bilbao with his “Spanish Courtship” and Jean Sala with his portrait of Polaire, the famous diva of the Paris Café- Concerts. All these and others in this collection of nearly a hundred pictures testify to the owner’s active interest in art, his catholicity of taste and his discrimination. Bringing them together was evidently a pleasur- able and edifying pursuit. An opportunity is offered to others, now that the pictures are to be dispersed, to pick and choose according to their liking. Wiwiuiam A. CorFin. CONDITIONS OF SALE 1. The Association exercises great care to catalogue every lot cor- rectly, and will give consideration to the opinion of any trustworthy expert to the effect that any lot has been incorrectly catalogued, and, in its judgment, may either sell the lot as catalogued or make mention of the opinion of such expert, who thereby would become responsible for such damage as might result were his opinion without proper foundation.
