ONLY ONE OTHER COPY RECORDED, THAT BEING IN THE BIBLIOTHEQUE NATIONALE, Paris. BEAUTIFUL COPY, IN WONDERFULLY FINE CONDITION, WITH AN ORIGINAL BLANK LEAF AT BEGIN- NING AND LEAF OF REGISTER, WHICH ARE LACKING IN THE BIBLIOTHEQUE NATIONALE copy. The first blank leaf has some writing and stains, but otherwise the volume is almost as clean and fresh as new. WupE MarcINs, leaves measuring 5 5/16 x 3% inches. There are four leaves in manuscript in signature L, which appear to be part of the original volume, having the same manuscript foliation continuous with that on the printed leaves. The printed leaves for this section may have been lost in assembling or acci- dentally left blank. This copy agrees with Pellechet’s collation of the first two parts (which are complete in themselves without the third and fourth parts), with the fol- lowing variations,—First signature (unmarked) has eight leaves instead of six, first blank and present, Calendar on second to seventh, Register on eighth, followed by the Psalter, then the Breviary, thus making the colla- tion,—Signatures [*] in eight, AA to EE in twelves, FF in eight, A to O in twelves, P in eight, total 252 leaves instead of 250 for this section, as given by Pellechet. There are also some slight variations in the abbrevia- tions used in the text, but the lining-off is the same. There is no printer’s colophon at the end of any of the various sections of text, the complete volume ending on leaf 418, according to Pellechet, actually leaf 420, with the words,—“Per Christum dominum nostrum, R | Amen.” The binder has lettered the back,—“Compendium Breviarii | 1461 [!] Imp. in Membranis [!] |. ONLY ONE COPY OF THIS WORK IS RECORDED IN AMERICA, that being in the Harvard University Library, and ONLY ONE COPY HAS BEEN OFFERED AT AUC- TION IN ENGLAND IN THE LAST TWENTY YEARS. De Tortis printed two editions of Sicero’s Officiorum in Venice, in 1481 and 1482, the original work including other books by Cicero, with the Colophon at the end of the entire volume. The Officiorum is complete in itself but has no separate Colophon. Hain did not know a perfect copy of this 1482 edition and gives the collation of the Officiorum of that date as a last part of the 1481 edition. De officiis libri tres. Numerous marginal and interlinear interesting notes by a contemporary German scholarly hand. [ Leipzig: Martin Landsberg, c. 1495-96. ] This edition is apparently unknown, as it does not appear to be described by any bibliographer: it seems to be a reprint of Hain 5234 (Cat. of Inc. in the Brit. Mus., III, p. 639) issued from the same press about 1493 or 1494. Landberg device is here in state (b), which superseded state (a) in 1495-96. Bound at the beginning of the volume are the following interest- ing pieces, also with numerous interesting annotations, evidently written by the same hand which engrossed the “Officia”: Epistola amatoria quam Sapho puella ad absentem mittit Phaonem (6 leaves); Hanc epistolam 12 62 63 64 65 66 67 scribtt Hermione Horesti (3 leaves and 2 blanks); vita dius anthonit ad sanctissimum dominum Eugenium papam quartum per Mapheum Vegium Laudensem (14 leaves; at the end the following note: Telos in carnis priuio anno domini 1499); Marct Tulij Ciceronis Paradoxa (13 leaves) ; M. T. C. pro Marco Marcello ad patres conscriptos et Caium Caesarem Oratio (9 leaves; at the end the following note: Collecta 8 ydus mensis Septembris. 1498. anno (and added by a later hand) Nunburgi a Domino Saganenst. Prelecta rursus Nunburgi anno. 1542, etc.) ; Ouidij Nasonis de remedio Amoris liber primus [et secundus] (21 leaves) ; Aristotilis Libellus de regimine princtpum (deals with medicine, 7 leaves). After the Cicero are bound the two following works: Laurentii Vallensis Elegantiae de lingua latina, Venice, J. B. Sessa, 8 Febr. 1499 (Hain 15822), and Joannis Tortellit Ortographia, Venetiis, Johannes de tridino, 19 Dec. 1495 (Hain 15574). CID. Cronica del muy esforcado cavallero el Cid Rvy Diaz Campeador. OPINIONS OF THE PRESS “It would be nice to be able to say something lasting and impressive about the Quinn Catalogues, but nothing that might be said—this side of hyper- bole—will be as impressive as these catalogues themselves. They areunique and challenging, and they have set a new standard of excellence.” The New York Herald i oo “Whoever catalogued the China Library certainly surpassed himself: we i ay have never seen so fine a job of bibliographic annotation.’ Christopher Morley in The New York Evening Post : ie “Whoever wrote the introductions, made a catalogue that will be some- er iu thing to be treasured in the library of a book-lover. The faultless pontine Ae: and format would attract, apart from the interest of the items offered. . The catalogue was the finest ever issued by an auction house.” _ Boston ‘Evening T- vanscript “No more remarkable library of first editions of modern authors has ey eb | be ing details and points of view to be found nowhere else... ... One been formed than that of Mr. John Quinn. The catalogue, when completed, will form a very valuable and permanent book of reference. The brief biographical details are unconventional and always interesting, often furnish- might go on quoting columns from these terse and often epigrammatic biographies.” The London Times (iva Supplement) v. 0 ‘ 2 y., . \ \. “ ¢ \.¢ LBs Bose, Vv Vv¥Gvv Vivvoteotvus Jule vv J Vivsuly ¥UFVYVOTYVOTYUULY Ad SGTOS oulsG PVEVUEVUEYYLEVYL ~ ~ Sa We ae | “ 5 He,goesO° 9e19C He; an eCAane 9e15 PRIS STP TP PAPE A 4 . is a : = ne = nd —_e SS pA pa Ne eo Oe SN Of) a OFF Pte vig | o SOs5CISS HA AHO COO COA SOC LHCAOL sc15c¢ ae Oi Pid Pie se795¢19¢ se795¢ ta} 19¢ 80495 43¢ faved Ralal ale tals e190 Scjod 90°145¢ Oley g = : eas y Nay Sa (2 lay Sige (Se St (ay fis efi i . iar (an. fs fan ‘aN a , Naf Ne fa Py ia “ of fe fs ‘ f\ , (ar 5 « ak ‘oN + Sa ee ~~ ae
