BADE THE STORY of the LATE PRINCESS LWOFF-PARLAGHY WHOSE ART COLLECTION IS TO BE SOLD at THE ANDERSON GALLERIES By Frepericx M. Dettius Late secretary to the Princess Lwoff-Parlaghy 7 Princess Elisabeth Lwoff, née Parlaghy, was born at Hadjn Dorog, Hungary. As a child she showed a special fondness for music and painting, but she soon realized that the latter was her true vocation, and with her parents’ consent and encouragement she began to spe- cialize, working under the best Hungarian masters. At the age of four- teen she was taken to Munich, in the hope that the great Lenbach would accept her as a pupil. But the Master was irritable and un- pleasant at the interview; he did not like the presumption that asked him to take a mere slip of a girl as a pupil. His disapproval was so evident that the girl began to cry, begging him to give her some test that would enable her to show what she could do. At last Lenbach relented, and pointing to one of his pictures told her to take it away and copy it exactly—of course an impossible task, he imagined, for a child of her age. In two weeks she came back with her copy, and put it quietly on the floor, resting against the easel. Her mother, with the original, waited in another room. The Master looked at the copy, complete even to his signature, and shrugged his shoulders. She had given up the attempt, as he expected, and brought his picture back. . . . He reproached her with wasting his time: he had other things to do than humor a wayward child who would not even try to complete the task she had begged for. To his profound astonishment, her mother now came in with the original picture. The Master saw that he had made an extraordinary mistake. The child was a genius, and he at once welcomed her as his pupil. Later the Princess travelled extensively in Holland, Germany, Italy and Spain. Her first laurels were gained by a remarkable portrait of Kossuth, the famous Hungarian patriot. The painting was exhibited in Turin, and then taken to Berlin, where it attracted keen attention. It is now in the Museum at Budapest. The artist was only fifteen years old, but she had made her mark unmistakably and won her ners among the leading portrait painters of the world. It would be difficult to enumerate all the distinguished personages who sat for her in the ensuing years—such celebrities as King Edward of England, King Christian of Denmark, the German Emperor, the Czar and Czarina of Russia, the Empress Eugénie, King Leopold of Belgium, King Albert and Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, Queen Elizabeth of Rumania (Carmen Sylva), King William of Wiirttemberg, King Alexander and King Peter of Serbia, Queen Margherita of Italy, King Ferdinand of Bulgaria, the Shah of Persia, Clemenceau, Bismarck, Crispi, Caprivi, Moltke, and many others—rulers, statesmen, scien- tists, financiers. The Princess received many decorations, including the most ree in Europe. With several of them, she was the only woman upon whom they had ever been conferred. Her distinctions included the Palms and Laurels of the Académie, Paris; the French Gold Salon Medal; the Great Chicago Gold Medal; the Great Gold Papal Medal; the Prussian Gold State Medal; the German Great Gold State Medal, and countless others. She was an Officer of the French Academy, a mem- ber of the Order of Holy Savoy, the Persian Order of the Lion, etc., etc. Her American activities included portraits of August Belmont, John Burroughs, Andrew Carnegie, Charles F. Chandler, William H. Child, Joseph H. Choate, William C. Church, Robert W. De Forest (President of the Metropolitan Museum), Chauncey M. Depew, Admiral Dewey, Thomas A. Edison, Daniel C. French, General George - W. Goethals, Ben Ali Haggin, Myron T. Herrick, Seth Low, Percival Lowell, Edwin Markham, Henry Fairfield Osborn, Alton B. Parker, General Horace Porter, Ogden Mills Reid, Whitelaw Reid, Theodore Roosevelt, General Daniel E. Sickles, Admiral Sigsbee, H. H. Topakyan, Nicola Tesla, General Benjamin Tracy, General James Grant Wilson, and other celebrities. ere he. ie. ae ae te The Princess was a great friend of animals (especially dogs), and was Honorary Patron of many societies devoted to their welfare. Naturally, she was a strong opponent of vivisection. She was a discriminating collector of antiquities, especially Gothic tapestries and rare velvets and rugs. Many of the crowned heads and other prominent personages with whom she came into contact were glad to add to her collection. In 1903 she painted the portrait of Ali Aska Khan, Grand Vizier of Persia, and one of the greatest men Persia ever produced. He was so delighted with the portrait that he gave the Princess one of his rarest rugs, woven in the first years of the Seventeenth Century for Shah Abbas—a splendid Kashan silk throne rug. In her work in America, the Princess performed a real service for both the New World and the Old. Except in a few instances, repre- sentative Americans were not familiar to Europeans. It was her idea that copies of her album of crayons of our famous men would find their way to the leading libraries and museums across the water, and help to promote mutual understanding. The Princess died at her residence at 109 East 39th Street, New York, on August 28, 1923. 4 a ie ’ qt a: *c% 7 as res ‘S £ . yal eae vad ~ eke z ORDER OF SALE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, APRIL NINTH EUROPEAN POTTERY AND PORCELAIN 1-26 ANTIQUE WROUGHT IRON, COPPER AND PEWTER OBJECTS 27-41 MISCELLANEOUS OBJECTS OF ART 42-69 TEXTILES 70-103 GOTHIC BRONZE AND COPPER ALTAR ORNAMENTS, ETC. 104-121 SILVER AND SILVER PLATE 122-142 JEWELRY, GOLD AND SILVER MEDALS 143-179 ORIENTAL RUGS 180-188 FURNITURE 189-224 VELVET AND DAMASK CUSHIONS, CURTAINS, ETC. 225-239 TEXTILES | - 240-276 WEDNESDAY EVENING, APRIL NINTH PAINTINGS 277-303 GERMAN FIFTEENTH AND SIXTEENTH CENTURY WOOD CARVINGS 304-317 PAINTINGS 318-358 SALE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, APRIL NINTH, AT 2:30 FIRST SESSION NUMBERS 1-276 { The following numbers were formerly the property of Princess Lwoff- Parlaghy and are sold now for account of others in interest: 39, 40, 41, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 122, 188, 139, 140, 141, 142, 143, 144, 145, 146, 147, 148, 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, 158, 159, 160, 161, 162, 163, 164, 165, 166, 167, 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 178, 174, 175, 176, 177, 178, 179, 188, 272, 273, 274, 275, 276, 279, 280, 327. This rug is accompanied by a certificate copied after a statement of Professor Abraham Yohannan, Professor of Oriental Languages, Indo-Iranian Department, Columbia University. This certificate will be handed over to the purchaser. The inscription reads ac- cording to the certificate: “The gift and the glorious Shah match perfectly, As the Sun fits the vault of Heaven, as the rose the goblet, and the diadem the throne, Throughout the Eastern land it is well known, That this is the product of forty years of study of the art. The date is equivalent to ‘Bagdad’. Consequently, its value cannot be overestimated.” 19 189 190 191 192 193 194 According to the certificate the word “Bagdad” is a chronogram. The numerical values of the letters are: B equal to 2; A to 1; G to 1000; D to 4; A to 1; and D to 4; total equal to 1012 A.H., which corresponds to 1603 A.D. This according to Pro- fessor Yohannan’s certificate, would date the rug very early 17th century at the time of Shah Abbas the Great. According to the certificate it was in all probability woven for Shah Abbas. It was plainly a state rug intended for use in the throne room hanging back of the throne. It passed as a most cherished heir- loom from the royal family to the late Prime Minister Ali Asker Khan, and was presented by him as a mark of distinguished cour- tesy to Princess Lwoff-Parlaghy.
