CHAPMAN INTRODUCTION "THIS Collection of Etchings, Wood Cuts and Lithographs shows the evolution of graphic art in the nineteenth century under certain new points of view, and emphasizes the importance of the French Painter-engravers and of French Lithographic Art. The graphic work of Corot, Delacroix and Millet is not appreciated in the United States as it ought to be and only a few Connoisseurs recognize that a Daumier Lithograph can be a monumental work of art of the first rank. Still less known and appreciated is the graphic work of the Impressionist and Post-impressionist French artists. Very few people know that Cezanne and Renoir were Lithographers in their spare moments. The Lithographs of Toulouse-Lautrec are fairly well-known and appreciated, but the extraordinary Etchings of Degas are unknown to the greater public. The present Collection contains a particularly important series of the graphic work of these artists. Some of the pieces represent extremely rare and interesting states, and many of them were acquired from the Col- lection of Edgar Degas which was sold at auction in Paris after the death of the artist. The American collector is here offered a rare opportunity. Whistler, Zorn and Meryon are classics and nothing need be said about their merits nor about the quality of their work.
