The original is one of the chief ornaments of the Mu- mee seum of Naples. This copy is supposed to have been made in the 16th century by a pupil of Ti- tian, and is valued by experts very highly. It has been for five years in the Loan Collection of the Metropolitan Museum. It was brought to Boston in 1809 by Hon. James Bowdoin, U. S. Minister to Spain ; and was given by him at his death, in 1811, with one hundred other pictures to Bowdoin College, in Maine. Owing to the ignorance of Art prevailing at that time, the Col- lege authorities concealed it in the garret for forty years, and then sold it to a gentleman of Portland. It was purchased of him twenty-five years ago by Mr. Hall. It was backed by a new lining and restored some years since, and has not _ hitherto been offered for sale by the present gue) Owner, ay The Education of the Virgin, by Ru- bens.
