On one side is a large medallion with figures, entitled “Venus Bewitching Adonis”; a smaller medallion with cupids decorates the other side. It is remarkable how well Ginori has succeeded in re- producing the Old Italian Majolicas—among them re- productions of Lucca Della Robbia—so perfect as to be Sometimes mistaken for the original work of the old master. Blue field filled with various sized cartouches—cream-colored, old rose and Nile green—which are covered with floral motifs. Dark blue border with architectural themes. An unusually fine rug. Size, 9 feet 9 inches x 7 feet 4 inches. HEAVY KAZAK RUG A typical example of the boldest, strongest rugs made in the Caucasian country. Characteristic red-brown, with the huge outstanding pattern used for centuries by this tribe of weavers. The principal device in blue takes its origin from the Swastika. The large white figures are floral in their derivation, and the repetitive pattern of the border on white is drawn from very old symbolical figures. The rug has an extremely heavy pile. Upholstered in satin brocade. 499 THREE ROSEWOOD CHAIRS Top rail ornamented with carved design of scroll and urn. The centre splat is V-shaped, square tapering splat on either side. The two front legs, having carved medallions at the top, are partly fluted and reeded, and terminate into spade feet. The two back legs curve slightly outward. Two of the chairs have seats upholstered with taupe and blue-colored plush, Chinese appliqué embroidery of roses and leaves in the centre. The other chair is upholstered in satin brocade with polychrome floral de- sign. 500 OCTAGONAL ROSEWOOD TABLE Moulded edge. Underneath is a deep octagonal apron, fitted on opposite sides with two drawers, on either side of which is a large compartment. The eight sides are alternately decorated with pierced basket-work design and panels ornamented with marqueterie work. A large com- partment below, having one shelf, is enclosed by a door having a large sunken panel of maplewood with raised berries and leaves carved in the form of a square; in the centre of this is a shaped medallion, raised and decorated with white Florentine mosaic lillies and leaves of green stained wood. On the cut-off corners on either side are carved pilasters of human figures. The base juts outward and is ornamented in front with marqueterie work and a carved ornament. Between the cabinets is a shallow drawer ornamented with carved fantastic ani- mals and scrolls. Supported on eight carved bulbous- shaped pedestals, one under each corner of cabinet, which stands upon a flat base having a square piece cut out of centre on either side, beaded edge. Up- per portion having ormolu gallery surrounding three sides of top, pierced fretwork design; widely grooved border with violet wood inlay and centre panel of mar- queterie. Beneath are two hinged doors having sunken panels inlaid with violet wood, and a shield-shaped marqueterie ornamentation in each corner. Oval-shaped ebony convex medallion in centre of doors, filled with marqueterie work; chased gilt moulding. ‘Two draw- ers below have ebony panels inlaid with floral sprays. Cut-off corners ornamented with gilt bronze figures and satinwood inlay. Interior of cabinet has mirror back and ormolu mounts with four drawers. The lower portion has a convolute front and rounded corners. The top is composed of two sliding shelves, one under the other; the upper one is inlaid with flow- ers upon an ebony ground with centre medallion of satinwood having two flying birds in stained wood. The shaped apron contains a drawer with a medallion between two panels of ebony inlaid with flowers and birds. Supported on four cabriole legs, the top and feet ornamented with gilt acanthus leaves. _ Height, 4 feet 4 inches; width, 2 feet 2 inches. Depth, 1 foot 8 inches. 535 ROSEWOOD CABINET In two portions. The upper portion has a dentelled cornice, and is vertically divided into three parts. The widest part, in the centre, has a mirror, the woodwork around top and sides being inlaid with satinwood form- ing a floral design. Beneath this is a curved shelf. ‘i The two other parts each have a cabinet enclosed by a door with sunken glass panels through which can be seen the mirror set in the back. These cabinets are supported at each corner in front by a carved pillar. The lower portion has in the centre two hinged doors with beautifully carved festoons and pendants of flow- ers, pearls and scrolled ribbon. Underneath this are two small shelves placed one under the other on oppo- site sides, upheld by slender columns. The sides are divided into three parts. Underneath a small open compartment, flanked by carved and fluted pillars, is a drawer inlaid with marqueterie work, floral design. Below this is a door with sunken beveled glass panel, inside are two shelves. The feet are Square and mould- ed, four in front and two in back. Height, 6 feet 4 inches; width, 5 feet 6 inches. Supported on three front and two back legs, octagonal shape and tapering, finished with small bulbous feet between which are scrolled stretchers. The entire front and sides of this fine piece are inlaid with bands of violet wood enclosing panels of beautiful marqueterie work; urns filled with flowers, with pedestals decorated with acanthus leaves upon which perch small birds. The low side pieces have sunken panels, and two small high panels are at éach side of the bed, all decorated with marqueterie. The foot board has a round fluted top, intersected with carvings of acanthus leaves; on the outside are two long sunken panels with marqueterie inlay. Very elaborately carved with scrolled acanthus leaves, and heads forming handles of drawers. The doors have sunken panels with floral and leaf design in relief. Height, 6 feet 4 inches; width, 7 feet 5 inches. Depth, 1 foot 6 inches. 75 REMARKABLE COLLECTION OF STUFFED ANIMAL HEADS 550 RECORD MOOSE HEAD 551 552 553 554 Of exceptional size, with 32 prongs. It is one of the record heads of the world, and said to be the second largest in existence. The animal is claimed by natur- alists to have been 54 to 55 years of age at the time it was shot by an Indian in the northwest territory of Alaska. A special expedition was sent a distance of 400 miles from the coast to bring out this head. It is fully described in the book entitled “Big Game.” Spread of horns, 64 inches.
