The left of the picture is occupied by the principal group of seven figures. Three men and a woman are seated at the table, on which are a ham and various accessories. In the background boors are merry- making and dancing, and an old man upon a barrel is playing the bagpipes. This picture, known by and engraved under the title of the Dejeuner au Jambon, is a chef-d’ceuvre, uniting all the qualities which place Teniers in the first rank among painters. A servant is leaning over her chair, and _ bends forward to read what she is writing. A lady is standing before the table, the corsage of her dress is of crimson, and the skirt of white satin. Ona stool a spaniel is looking mpeg at his mistress, This charming picture is one of the most celebrated of this painter’s productions. It is fall of grace and delicacy. On the right are rocks and trees, at the foot of which runs a stream; peasants, with mules, beautifully intro- duced by Berghem, are advancing on a road. On canvas, 25 inches high and 33 wide. J. WYNANTS. - Born at Haerlem in 1600, died in 1670. 20 A LanpscaPE, with a sandy bank. A road, on which are some travelling peasants, occupies the centre; on the left are two trunks of trees, at the foot of which is some beautiful herbage near a pool of water. The figures in this charming production are by Adrian van de Velde. On canvas, 20 inches high and 24 wide. PHILIP WOUVERMANS. | 21 A LANDscAPE, with a flooded country. B 18 On the right peasants are wading, and some in carts and on horseback ; the left is occupied by a sandy road, enriched with rustic figures, and a group of trees in the centre. This picture is of the fine time of the master. On canvas, 24 inches high and 31 wide. J. WYNANTS, 1661. 22 A rich LANDSCAPE, with a mountainous dis- tance, and a road on the skirts of a wood, on which a party is returning from the chace. The figures are introduced by Adrian Van de Velde. This bijouis of the finest execution of the master. On canvas, 21 inches high and 26 inches wide. — ADRIAN VAN DE VELDE. Born at Amsterdam in 1639, died in 1672. — 23 On the bank of a stream, overshadowed by a tall oak tree, Arcus is falling asleep while watching his herd of Cows and Sheep, which Mercury is preparing to take pos- session of by slaying their guardian. This picture is a chef-d'euvre of the highest quality. ‘On canvas, 26 inches high and 353 wide. GERARD TERBURG. } 24 A YarD, with a WomaAN seated before a door with a little Girl. In the back-ground a figure is watching a man, who is sharpening a tool on a grindstone under a shed. On canvas, 28% inches high and 233 wide. — 19 PHILIP WOUVERMANS. 25 La Course AUX HARENGS. In a village are a multitude of figures witnessing the game near a cabaret; other figures are drinking. This picture is of the highest quality, and in the finest time of this celebrated master. On canvas, 254 inches high and 32 wide. GABRIEL METZU. Born at Leyden in 1615, died at Amsterdam in 1698. 26 Tue INTERIOR OF A BED-CHAMBER. A young Dutch lady, dressed in a pink corset and a white petticoat embroidered with gold, is washing her hands, and an attendant is pouring out the water, whilst a young cavalier, in a black dress, is opening the door. This capital composition is distinguished by great freshness of colour and exquisite finishing. On canvas, 334 inches high and 27 wide. PHILIP WOUVERMANS. 27 Tue Great Horse Fair. In a plain, near a river which meanders through a rich country, are assembled a multitude of figures and horses. | This extraordinary production is one of the most surprising of this matchless painter. Nothing can exceed the bril- liancy of the colour and the beauty of touch. On panel, 254 inches high and 35 wide. J. VAN OCHTERVELDT. 28 A youne Lapy, in a dress of white satin, with a handkerchief of the same tied over her Be 20 head, is seated with a dog in her lap, perusing a letter, which her attendant, who holds an ewer and salver of silver at a table covered with a rich carpet, is endeavouring likewise to read. This capital production might be taken at first sight for a picture by Terburg. On canvas, 36 inches high and 30 wide. D. TENIERS. 29 A VILLAGE KERMEssE, called *« L’ETENDARD DE L’Emprrrur.” Under the sign a group of many figures are assembled, some dancing to a man playing the hurdygurdy; in the half-distance is another group dancing to a bagpiper, with other figures and cottages in the distance. This capital composition is painted in a silvery tone, and the figures are full of spirit. Size 21 inches high by 32. In the fore-ground, to the left, some women are washing vegetables at a fountain, near whom are several figures, and a cart and horses; a cavalier with an attendant and dogs is going out hawking. At a sculptured fountain a lady and a cavalier are attended by a negro servant; peasants and convicts are grouped about ; boats with figures are on the left of the picture, and a trumpeter is sounding the departure of the vessel. The picture is richly coloured and full of interest. Canvas, -32 inches high by 41 wide. ISAAC OSTADE. Born at Lubeck in 1612. Pupil of his brother Adrian. 33 A CHuRCH and several Rustic BUILDINGS occupy the right of the picture; at the door of an auberge figures, with waggons and _ horses, are halting to refresh themselves, while others in the fore-ground are reposing from the fatigue of their journey. A capital production. On canvas, 30 inches high and 43 wide. JOHN LINGELBACK. Born at Frankfort in 1625, died at Amsterdam in 1687, 34 A SEA-PoRT IN THE LEVANT, WITH SLAVES UNLOADING A VESSEL. A booth occupies the fore-ground to the left, with an itinerant musician; a statue of white marble on a j * * § =; ee | vi; ') a 22 pedestal is seen to the right, with figures at cards, and slaves at the foot of the pedestal. This capital composition, painted in a clear ak silvery tone, is of the best time of the master. On canvas, 31 inches high and 45 wide. HOBBEMA. 35 A Forest ScENE, intersected by a wide road; to the left is a woodman’s cottage, with beggars at the door, overshadowed by a noble group of trees. . The solitude of the scene is enlivened by several beautiful figures—a lady and gentleman are advancing on the road followed by their carriage and servants, and a man with hawks is near them. A most delightful specimen of this great painter, who was regarded in his time more as an amateur and protector of the arts than as an Ry being Burgomaster of his town. On canvas, 37 inches high by 51 wide. J. VAN GOYEN. Born at Leyden in 1596, died at the Hague in 1656. 36 A VILLAGE on the Banx of a River: the rus of an ancient edifice are reflected in the water; to the left are fishermen in a boat, and other boats and figures. On canvas, 34 inches high and 44 wide. J. RUYSDAEL. 37 A VIEW ON THE BORDERS OF A VAST Foun OF ANCIENT Oaks. An opening on the left discovers a distant country ; in the centre is a pool of water; on the road is a 23 mounted cavalier conversing with a poor soldier; a shepherd and shepherdess are driving some sheep from the right. The figures are introduced by Berghem. This admirable picture is one of the most astonishing pro- ductions of this great landscape painter. On canvas, 39 inches high by 41 wide. JOHN HUGHTENBORG. 388 AN ENGAGEMENT OF CAVALRY NEAR A TOWN. A hilly landscape, with a river to the left. A capital composition, in the manner of Wouvermans. On canvas, 334 inches high and 40 wide. D. TENIERS. 39 Tue Great Fair or GHENT. In an open space, near a church, a multitude of figures are assembled before the stage of a mountebank ; in the centre is the artist and his wife witnessing the festivities, and followed by a page; on the left is a beautiful group of figures near a public-house, and numerous booths in the back-ground; on the right are other booths under a row of trees, with figures diffe- rently employed. This picture is full of interest, and one of the most capital pictures of the master. It contains nearly 200 figures, and is of the unusual size of 32 inches high by 45 wide. JAN STEEN. Born at Leyden in 1636, died at Delft in 1689. 40 A GRAND SALOON, in which is celebrated the MaRRIAGE at CANA. 24 At the principal table our Saviour is in the midst of the guests, and is in the act of turning the water into wine ; on the left,-at a long table, guests of an inferior order are regaling, and in a gallery on the right are the musicians ; the marble floor is strewed with branches, and a rich green drapery is suspended above. This picture is of the best time and most careful execution of the master, and is a most capital production. On canvas, 48 inches high and 57 wide. PAUL POTTER. Born at Enknissen in 1625, died at Amsterdam in 1654. 41 Four Buttocks in a Meapow taking shelter under some Trees from an appremeante Shower —a Farm-house in the distance. A charming specimen of this rare master. ‘The signature, Paulus Potter 1653, shews that this picture was painted in his 28th year,—the year before his death, and in the zenith of his talent. On panel, 15} inches high and 14 wide. . D. TENIERS. 42 Tue INTERIOR OF AN ESTAMINET, with a group of four Boors. One of them is seated on a wooden bench; he holds a pipe in one hand and a pitcher in the other, he hasa red cap with a feather on: the second is also seated, with his hat over one eye; he has some tobacco in a paper which he is about to put in his pipe; on a barrel before him is an earthen chafing-dish ; another is behind filling his pipe; an opening in the back-ground shows the landlord going to fetch liquor. This charming production is in a clear and transparent tone. On panel, 144 inches high and 194 wide. 29 PHILIP WOUVERMANS,. 43 On the right is a SutTLer’s Booru, near which are several Cavaliers, and a Lady on a grey horse; one holds his horse by the bridle, another is in the act of mounting a bay horse; in the fore-ground is a Trumpeter on horseback, ready to sound at the moment of their de- parture; on the left, in the distance, is an encampment with several Soldiers mounted and on foot, in the fore-ground on the same side is a Beggar, with a wooden leg, asking charity. This pretty specimen of Wouvermans is richly painted and admirably designed. On wood, 17 inches high by 144. | JOHN PAUL PANNINI. Born at Placentia 1691, died 1764. 44 Under a rich CorintHian Portico, through which a CoLonaDE is seen in_ perspective, our Saviour appears seated at a large table among the guests at the Marriage of Cana, who, together with his Disciples, express their astonishment at the miracle he has performed by turning the water into wine. The beautiful and rich composition, and fine colouring, ‘may place this picture among the most perfect productions of this artist. On canvas, 39 inches high by 53. W. VAN MIERIS. Born at Leyden 1662, died 1747. 45 At a window, a young Man dressed in yellow satin, with a scarf and velvet cap, is beating a drum to amuse two children, his elbow is leaning 26 on his drum, which rests on the window-seat ; the little girl has a doll in her hand, and the boy is carrying a red flay on his shoulder. On the window-seat is a sword, a ball, and a toy, and on the left side a green satin curtain falls and partly covers a bas-relief of children playing with goats. This charming composition is worthy of Gerard Dow, and has not the dryness which sometimes is seen in this artist ; it bears date 1702, when his talent was in perfec- tion. This pleasing production of this master is embellished by the figures of Adrian van de Velde. Before a public-house, on the left, a party of peasants are merry-making, and beyond them boors are quar- relling and fighting; in the fore-ground a woman is — 3] drawing away her husband, who has been wounded in the fray ; close to the bank is a barge laden with hay, from which boys are bathing. In a landscape, seated on a hillock on the right, is a young shepherdess in a blue corset, with a straw hat; she is playing on a flageolet, which a rustic is teaching her by placing her fingers; at her feet is seated a young shepherd playing on the bagpipe, and i 1s looking at her. This beautiful specimen of the master is most spirited, and executed with great delicacy. On copper, height 105 inches by 74. JOHN WYNANTS. 66 ScreNE in HOoLLAnp, intersected by plains, woods, villages, and mountains. — In the distance are some trees; on a hillock which occupies the left side, and which serves to give distance, rises the trunk of an old oak which has few branches, and is surrounded by plants and brambles. On the right an old man leads a flock composed of horned cattle and sheep. 33 These animals and their conductor, painted by Adrian van der Velde, complete this precious gem, which is a chef-d ceuvre of the master. GERARD TERBURG. 69 THe Conaress or MuNSTER. Engraved by Suiderhof, and the most esteemed of all this artist’s works. It represents all the ministers plenipotentiary who assisted at the congress. The artist has given his own portrait among the spectators. That he esteemed it the chef-d'euvre of his performances may be inferred from his setting the high price of 6,100 florins on the picture. Born at Lubeck 1610, died at Amsterdam 1689; dated 1662. 71 At the Door of a Caparer a Fidler, seated near a post ofa shed, is playing to four peasants who are dancing, others are looking on and are smoking and drinking; under the shed are tables where men and women are regaling ; in the fore-ground, on the same side, two children are playing with a black dog. On the left, part of the village is seen in perspec ns enlivened with spirited figures. This capital production, full of truth and spirit, was painted by Ostade in his 52d year. The painter is playing the violin and watching a bird in a cage, his music-book is open before him; he leans upon a rich carpet, which in part conceals the entab- lature below the window, which represents, in bas-relief, children playing with goats. In the interior of the apartment is seen a man at a table smoking his pipe, and another grinding colours. This charming picture, unrivalled for truth, was formerly in the Gallery of the Palais Royal. BREEMBURG. 82 An IraLiaAn LANDSCAPE, with a Town built on the Table of a Mountain, defended by a square Tower. On the right is a well at which a manis drinking ; and 38 a girl mounted ona grey horse, which is drinking out of a stone basin, a peasant accompanies her with a loaded ass and colt. This admirable picture resembles strongly the style of Kael du Jardin. On wood, height 16 inches by 21. GERARD DOW. 83 A Hermit’s Cry under the vaulted roof of an ancient Temple; he is meditating on a Manu- script, which is resting, as well as the hand in which he holds his Spectacles, on a ruin of brick- work. He is lighted by a candle, before which is a skull thrown on its side; a lantern, some books, and an hour-glass, complete this picture, which is full of harmony, representing most admirably the effect of candle-light. A cavalier and his wife, both mounted on spirited horses, a falcon perched on his wrist ; they are followed by falconers, dogs, and two mules loaded with refresh- ments; beggars are asking charity as they pass. On the right is an architectural fountain in ruins, at which a cavalier is refreshing his horse ; further in the dis- tance several cavaliers are stopping at the door of a Cabaret, under the shade of some trees. Pupil of Samuel Van de Hoogstraden and Gerard Dow. 85 In AN INTERIOR A YOUNG AND PRETTY 39 Dutch Girl with a pipe in her hand, and her arm leaning on a tub which is before her, on which is a candle; a young peasant is smiling at a pitcher which he holds on his knee, and which appears to be empty: they are sur- prised by an old woman. In half shadow is seen a girl and a child warming themselves. The foreground on this side is occupied by a table, on which is a milk jug of brass, and some onions. This precious picture, which gives the effect of candle and fire-light, is quite worthy of Gerard Dow. On wood, height 8 inches by 10. PHILIP WOUVERMANS. 86 A RuINED CABARET, the roof of which is ornamented with flowers and shaded with trees ; a party of cavaliers are refreshing themselves and their horses; other figures accompany a travelling waggon drawn by two horses. On the right some men are bathing in ariver; the distance is richly varied. This beautiful specimen appears to unite in a small compass all the qualities of this extraordinary artist. We may consider it of his best time, and most perfect execution. _ It is the pendant to No.84. On copper, height 54 inches by 10. GABRIEL METZU. 87 Near a circular-topped window, a Dutch Girl is seated, holding on her knee a lace pillow, which is covered with muslin; she has on a round cap, her dress is brown, and a white handkerchief falls on her bosom ; in the window 40 are her scissars, and a glass of beer; on the right a currant bush is trained about the win- — dow, and on the left hangs a cage with a bird. LOUIS BACKHUYSEN. 88 In the Port of Amsterdam, Men-of-War and: Merchant Vessels are moored ; a Market-boat is approaching the shore full of passengers—the sea is agitated by a slight breeze. This delightful picture, admirable for its extreme truth and — delicacy, may be compared to the finest works of W. Van de Velde. On canvas, height 18 inches by 234. PHILIP WOUVERMANS. 89 On the Banks of a River, several trading Vessels are taking in their cargo, and on some rising ground, a Waggon, drawn by three Horses, is unloading, The fore-ground is occupied by baggage, on which are seated two women nursing their children; beyond are two mules charged with bales of goods; on the same side, on the right, two horses are eating their oats, while another is lying down; the captain of one of the vessels, accompanied by a lady and child, is watching some men who are with difficulty rolling a large bale of goods on board a boat. The detail which enriches this composition is iimitable. POTTER, 1652. 91 A MEApvov, near a Village, with a beautifully varied group of Cattle reposing; in the centre a bullock is lowing; on the right is the noble trunk of an old oak; a charette, with figures, is advancing from the distant village, of which the church is visible. A beautiful gleam of sun lights up the fore-ground, which is forcibly contrasted by the dark clouds of an approaching shower. This capital picture is one of the best productions of this rare master; it was painted two years before his death and at his best time, it is in perfect preservation. Near a Chateau, a young lady is descending to meet a Cavalier, who has just alighted from his horse to offer her the produce of his sport; the young lady gathers from a vase near her a rose to present to him in return; a page holds a horse by the bridle ; near him are two ladies on horseback, a cavalier is helping one of them to alight, while the other is noticing a spaniel ; on the the right side huntsmen on horseback and on foot are arriving ; several domestics are reposing, with game spread near them. A varied landscape occupies the distance. Height, 19 inches by 26. ADRIAN OSTADE. 99 In THE INTERIOR OF A CABARET. By the side of a chimney, the hostess is seated, leaning carelessly on a long wooden settle, on the back of which an old man is leaning; he is smoking, and seems to suspend his operations to join in the conversation. In the fore-ground another man, with his hat on and covered with a large bluish mantle, is filling his pipe, seated in a low chair; a third is standing warming his back before the fire, and is raising to his lips a jug; a little girl is eating soup out of a porringer placed ona block of wood; a dog is watching her attentively. 44 In the back-ground, near an open window, three men are seated at a table smoking, and two others are standing conversing together. The details of this precious production are managed with the greatest skill. It bears date 1661, when this great master was in all his vigour. On panel, height 144 inches by 183. JACOB RUYSDAEL. 100 A River Scene, with large trees shadowing the foreground, where a man is ioe with a line. The ruins of an ancient edifice with a square brick tower are bounded by a forest. A cloudy sky, most skilfully managed, adds to the effect of this charming production, and the light which falls on the balldines is a most happy effort of art. : On wood, 16 inches square. Born at Amsterdam 1630, died at Venice 1678. 101 Aw Iratian LANDSCAPE, with a beautiful and extensive view of the Alps bounding the horizon. | Groups of trees are separated from the foreground by arivulet, which a peasant is passing, leading a mule; a female peasant is driving her flock. Beyond, under a vine near some fluted columus, are some soldiers, who have taken off their cuirasses to refresh themselves ; they are conversing with some women. In the fore-ground are sheep and goats; ona wide road, bounded by a wall, are droves of sheep and oxen passing under a ruined arch. . | This is one of the most perfect, works of the master. Near a chateau a cavalier is setting out for the chase, accompanied by his wife; she is mounted on a bright sorrel horse, and has a falcon on her wrist ; her husband, who goes before her, is mounted upon a fine bay courser ; he is talking to his falcon, and in his right hand he holds his hat with feathers ; a dog is barking before him. On the right a huntsman is preparing to mount a grey horse ; a young attendant is holding two greyhounds in slips. On the left a man is leading two horses to water at a fountain enriched with sculpture. This admirable work, for beauty of composition and exquisite colouring and finish, is second to none of this great master. Canvas, height 224 inches by 26. A female peasant, with a large basket of fruit on her head, is leading a little boy by the hand through a rivulet, a grey horse laden with calves, and an ass, are driven by an old man. On panel, 24 inches high and 20 wide, KARL DU JARDIN. 107 AN Iratian LANDscaAPE, with a rich and , warm evening sun and a clear sky, bounded by a high mountain; a stream turns the wheel of a mill. Beneath a rising bank to the left, several villagers are driving their cattle to a pool of water which crosses the road. A boy is driving a grey horse, on which AT a brilliant sunshine produces a most vivid effect. A traveller in the distance, mounted on a grey horse, is asking some information of a man walking by his side. At the door of an inn a horseman is refreshing his horse, and conversing with some peasants, and a group AQ of travellers smoking and drinking. In the centre is a horseman, and a woman with a child in her arms is asking charity of him. To the left several male and female peasants are engaged at their doors with their poultry and domestic animals. The centre group is illuminated by a beautiful gleam of sunshine. This charming production was originally painted on panel, but was transferred to canvas with a portion of the original panel still left, by Pignard, 18 inches high and 25 wide. WYNANTS. 114 A CHATEAU, SURROUNDED BY A MOAT AND TALL TREES. A man, seated on the bank of the stream in the fore- ground, accompanied by his dog, is fishing with a rod and line; several cavaliers and ladies are walking under the shade of the trees.
