SALES CONDUCTED BY MR. FREDERICK A, CHAPMAN
FOREWORD
HE paintings herewith offered to the public are so diversified in
character and cover so wide a range of art that they must appeal
to collectors of old European and American examples of every shade
and distinction.
There are canvases by some of the foremost English painters and
also by some less known on this side, but exceedingly popular abroad;
the Americans run the gamut from Copley to Huntington, while Stuart is
represented by examples characteristic of all the phases of his amazing
work. 3
For the collector absorbed in the history of genealogy what could be
more interesting than the fine presentments of those Dutch Patricians
the Groesbeecks of Albany, or the Distams by Vanderlyn; Albert Gallatin
by Huntington, or Peletiah Perit by Hicks?
Stuart, Savage and Polk sponsor the portraits of Washington and his
family, and there are several examples of Thomas Sully.
Among the English School there are interesting works by Reynolds
and Beechey; a representative and beautiful portrait of a lady by Thomas
Phillips; an exceptionally good and scarce portrait of a gentleman by
Thornhill, and a fine presentment of Phoebe Dawson, the “Village Belle”
(whose charms were sung by the poet George Crabbe), by Thomas
Duncan.
The Continental School offers some good Dutch, Italian, Flemish and
French examples, and the Portrait of a General by Vicente Lopez is a
noteworthy production.
For decorative purposes there are quite a number of canvases given
to Pannini and others that harmonize so well with tapestries and antique
furnishings.
