Sales Conducted by Mr. Frederick A. Chapman. RISKSBUREAU VOOR KUNSTHISTORISCHEL EN IKONOGRAFISCHE DOCUMENTATIE PREFACE. "THE Library of Mr. Charles Howard Shinn, the well-known writer on California topics, is rich in books and pamphlets relating to the early history of the Far West. There are ac- counts of the gold discoveries and reminiscences by and of the men who took part in them, important works on the Indians, early copies of Western newspapers, songsters, bibliographies, legal statutes, early San Francisco directories, information concerning the laying of the railroads, as well as valuable material referring to the activities of various religious sects. Much of this material is extremely rare. In a number of instances, no previous copy has appeared in book sales. Among the items are a broadside, ‘‘The Frazier River Ther- mometer,’’ 1858, refiecting the frenzied state of mind provoked by the discovery of gold, Anderson’s ‘‘Handbook of the Gold Regions,’’ 1858, of which but one other copy is known to have been sold at auction, ‘‘ Narrative of Edward MeGowan,’’ 1857, printed privately in a small edition and considered to be one of the rarest California items, Slater’s ‘‘Fruits of Mormon- ism,’’ 1851, one of three known copies of the only book printed in Coloma, where gold was discovered first, and ‘‘ The Personal Narrative of James O. Pattie,’’ Cincinnati, 1833, a copy of the very rare first edition. There also are many books of interest to the general collector, including first editions of American authors, colored plate books, early works on travel, etc., and a broadside issued by the War Department on April 20, 1865, with the photographs of Booth, Surratt and Harold offering $100,000 reward for the eapture of Lincoln’s assassin. The author had accurate knowledge of the gold region, gained during his long service as the Hud- son Bay Company’s Chief Trader in those parts. The Chinook Jargon in the appendix is the language used by the various Indian tribes, half-breeds and French as their only means of communication. Apparently no title-page was issued with the work.
