His col- lection, brought together between twenty and thirty years ago and mounted in his great hall at Conyers Manor, Greenwich, consisted of but few pieces, but each was chosen carefully and purchased only after it had been expertised, as authentic and desirable, by his group of collector friends who had followed the technical side of the study of armor, and who now and then put him on his guard against forgeries. In a word, Mr. Converse was determined that his armory should have in it no specimen whose authenticity could be questioned. We know, in point of fact, that the memoranda which have been transcribed in the present catalogue have been passed upon, not by one expert only but by several, including the most competent—and we find that their testimony corresponds accurately. Its elements somewhat composed [as in every specimen of Maximilian armor in this country]. For a suit of this early period and quality its restorations are few. It consists of the following authentic parts: Casque: Timbre of spherical type, with median ridge low and broad: bellows-visor of four ridges. Colletin Breastplate with neck border formed in the earlier manner as a sharp ridge without roping: below this is a wide blank area, bordered with three transverse grooves, which to- gether form an ornamental area, from which numerous grooves converge gracefully in the direction of the waist. Boots, both right and left, provided with sabbatons of the period; in one of these the terminal plate has been replaced. The toe-region of sabbatons is decorated with long ridges en torsade.
