CONDITIONS OF SALE
1. All bids to be PER LoT as numbered in the Catalogue.
2. The highest bidder to be the buyer; in all cases of disputed bids the
lot shall be resold, but the Auctioneer will use his judgment as to the good faith
of all claims and his decision shall be final. He also reserves the right to reject
any fractional or nominal bid which, in his judgment, may delay or injuriously
affect the sale.
3. Buyers to give their names and addresses and to make such cash pay-
ments on account as may be required, in default of which, the lots purchased ~
to be immediately resold. ,
4. The lots to be taken away at the buyer’s expense and risk within
twenty-four hours from the conclusion of the sale, and the remainder of the
purchase money to be absolutely paid on or before delivery, in default of which,
the Metropolitan Art Association will not be responsible if the lot or lots be
lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, but they will be left at the sole risk of the
purchaser, and subject to storage charges.
5. To prevent inaccuracy in delivery and inconvenience in the settlement
of purchases, no lot will be delivered during the sale.
6. All lots will be exposed for public exhibition in The Anderson Galleries
before the date of sale, for examination by intending purchasers, and the Metro-
politan Art Association will not be responsible for the correctness of the descrip-
tion, authenticity, genuineness, or for any defect or fault in or concerning any
lot, and makes no warranty whatever, but will sell each lot exactly as it is,
WITHOUT RECOURSE. But upon receiving before the date of sale, expert opinion —
in writing that any lot is not as represented, the Metropolitan Art Association
will use every effort to furnish proof to the contrary, and in default of such
_ proof the lot will be sold subject to the declaration of the aforesaid expert, he
being liable to the owner or owners thereof, for damage or injury occasioned
by such declaration.
7. Terms Caso. Upon failure to comply with the above conditions any
sum deposited as part payment shall be forfeited, and all such lots as remain
uncleared after twenty-four hours from the conclusion of the sale, will be resold
by either private or public sale at such time as the Metropolitan Art Association
shall determine, without further notice, and if any deficiency arises from such
resale, it shall be made good by the defaulter at this sale together with all the
expenses incurred thereby. This condition shall be without prejudice to the
right of the Metropolitan Art Association to enforce the contract with the buyer,
without such resale.
The Metropolitan Art Association will afford every facility for the employ-
ment of carriers and packers by the purchasers, but will not be responsible
for any damage arising from the acts of such carriers and packers.

Lacquer frame. The panels beautifully embroidered
on silk in peonies and chrysanthemums in various
shades and landscapes after a painting by Korin.
The base is finished in lacquer representing a flowing
stream. The reverse of the screen is silk, painted
with butterflies. Made by Take Shumaya of Kioto.
Height of each panel, 17 inches; width, 7 inches.
327 GOLD LACQUER BOX AND TRAY.
In the form of a cover for a set of four books, with
title ‘““Ishe Mono Gatari”’ inlaid in mother-of-pearl;
the entire surface of lacquer decorated with medal-
lions and vines in raised finish. The inner tray is
decorated with a basket of flowers on a smooth gold
ground.
Length, 5 inches; width, 4 inches; height, 2 inches.
328 SMALL JAPANESE LACQUER TANSU (CABINET).
Having three drawers inside; the handles and hinges
of silver, beautifully chased. The entire decoration |
represents the Views of Nikko Temple. On one
side the Bridge at Nikko in red lacquer; at one end
is the Temple Gate, the other the Kagin Waterfall;
the distant view of the woods finished in smooth
Togidashi lacquer, the foreground in Takamaki
lacquer, to make the perspective. The whole is
finished in the best type of workmanship, and the
Tansu is one of the finest pieces in the collection.

331 SHRINE GARNITURE SET OF FIVE PIECES.
On a teakwood stand. Consisting of two silver
flower vases; two candlesticks, and a koro as a
center piece. Each piece is inlaid with Cloisonné
enamel in bird and floral irregular panels. The
flowers in the vases represent lotus blossoms, leaves
and buds made of gilt bronze. The candlesticks are
in the form of storks riding on turtles holding a lotus
on their backs, all of silver. The koro has the original
cover with Dog Foo finial. Made by Masa Yoshi,
a celebrated silversmith in Japan.
Length of stand, 23 inches; width, 7 inches;
height of tallest piece, 13 inches.
332 SILVER TEA SERVICE WITH TRAY MADE IN
JAPAN.
Consisting of Alcohol Kettle, Lamp, Extinguisher
and Stand, Coffee Pot, Tea Pot, Cream Pitcher,
Sugar Bowl, Waste Bowl, and large Tray with
handles. Each piece is inlaid with Cloisonné enamel
representing drooping wistaria vines and flowers on
a hammered silver ground; the covers have finials
as butterflies of Cloisonné enamel. The tray only has
a monogram on a small shield in the center. Made
to order in Japan and marked as solid silver.

TWO SACRED CARP STANDARDS OF CAMBRIC.
To be used as a flag on the occasion of the Boys’
Festival; it is filled with the wind giving it the
natural shape. One black and white, one red and
white. (2 pieces.)

Thickly embroidered with figures and landscapes on
a red silk ground and lined with green silk. Repre-
senting the Imaginary Heaven of the children,
where they are engaged in producing all sorts of
miracles. These pieces hung before the main Altar
in the Temple of Agriculture at Pekin, from whence
they were taken during the Boxer Rebellion, and are -
supposed to be among the finest pieces of embroidery
ever brought from China.
Width, 5 feet; length, 9 feet (each).

Shaped as a Valance of olive cloth embroidered with
figures; with wide silk knotted fringe.
Length, 10 feet; width (with fringe), 3 feet.
This piece also was taken from the Temple of Agriculture during
the Boxer Rebellion.

Of cloth of gold and silver; with panels as yellow
clouds; embroidered with Imperial dragons and
peonies on an Imperial yellow ground; with border
of gold braid, ornamented with buttons and tassels.

343 FIRE SCREEN OF JAPANESE EMBROIDERY.
Panel embroidered on silk with three monkeys, “‘one
cannot see, one cannot hear, and one cannot taste;”
on the reverse is a free-hand painting on silk, of
rocks on which the sea spray dashes, and birds.
Framed in fine black lacquer. Made by Mishimura
of Kioto. Height, 42 inches; width, 29 inches.

344 FOUR-FOLD EMBROIDERED SCREEN WITH
LACQUER FRAME.
Representing cherry blossom time on the banks of
the Sumida River with a distant view of the Pagoda
of Asakusa Temple all embroidered in delicate shades ~
to show distance. The foreground is beautifully
embroidered with cherry trees in blossom, the
branches extending over the four panels; the Sumida
River is shaded in heavier silk to represent the
current, and the shadows of the sails of three junks
on the river are embroidered in an entirely dif-
ferent stitch. The whole is embroidered on a back-
‘ie ground of an exquisite shade of Clair-de-Lune Habu-
tai silk. The four small lower panels are embroid-
4 ered to represent reeds and water. The reverse is
r painted on silk, with a flock of wild geese flying
£ home at twilight towards the moon, rising in the
3 clouds. The frame is of highly polished black
lacquer. By Mishimura of Kioto.

Pair of wild ducks in snow-covered reeds, beautifully
worked out in fine embroidery on Habutai silk.
The reverse side represents a bamboo forest by the
Meguro River painted on silk. The panels are
framed in the finest black lacquer, with curved tops;
the base of each division is set in a lacquer panel
inlaid in floral medallions decorated in mother-of-
pearl and gold lacquer. By Taka Shimaya of Kioto.
