William de Leftwich Dodge, was born at Liberty, Bedfort County, Virginia, 1867. Since his very childhood, he has been an enfant gaté of the Muses, spending a large part of his youth in Munich and Paris, and entering the Beaux Arts in his sixteenth year, In 1886 he received athird medal in the Concours d’ Atelier under GérSéme; in 1887, another third medal and an honor- able mention for drawing at the Cour Yvon, and in 1888 the Prix d’Atelier. His ‘‘ Minnehaha” painted in 1886 was exhibited at the American Art Galleries, N.Y., where it was awarded a gold medal. He was only twenty-one when he received the third medal at the Salon for his ‘‘ David.” ach year the Salon is su: to bring one of the Mr. Dodge’s large ambitious canvasses, such as the ‘Water ee nS wees: Dance,” ‘‘ Dream of Orpheus,’ the colossal ‘‘ Burial of the Minnesink,” etc., which should he ad- mired a coed: deal more than they are for their soaring imagina- tion and savage dignity, and their ae combination of classical aspiration, lyrical beau ty and Richepin’s “‘ burly radiance.” This Le diversity makes Mr. ge one of the most interesting personali- ties of our American art, an individual talent and a truly artistic nature, who wastes more energy and enthusiasm ina year than most of our American artists do in a lifetime. His decoration of the Dome of the Administration Building at the World’s Fair, and the five panels and ceiling for the north-east corner pavilion of the Library of Congress, for which he received $10,000, established his indisputable fame as a mural painter.
