Water Color. 46 KAPPES, Alfred (deceased) New York One of the most thoughtful of American artist, original in composition and tenique. Awarded the N. A. Halgarten prize and the Clark prize for his famous painting, ‘‘ Rent Day.” His paintings are few and rare. Preparing a Meal. ZIEM, Felix In the earlier stages of his career, Ziem painted many fine pictures of Fiench, Dutch and Turkish scenery; but it was in Venice that he discovered the true bent of his genius. While Rico has painted Venice in the broad glare of sunlight, Ziem has translated into paint the sun-risings and evening light upon the lagoons with a wealth of color and sp'endor of imagination that have won him world- wide reputation. A native of Beaune, where he was born in 182t, he passed throuzh the art school at Dijon, and began to develop his power by wan- derings in the south of France. A Dutch scene secured him his first medal in the Salon of 1851, and views of the Golden Horn and of the Piazza of St. Mark in 1857 were rewarded with the Legion of Honor.
