McNeill Whistler 366 SPECIAL EXHIBITION CATALOGUE Series 1915; No. 6 THE CITY ART MUSEUM ST. LOUIS A COLLECTION OF DRAWINGS BY MASTERS OF VARIOUS SCHOOLS LENT FOR EXHIBITION BY DOCTOR MAX A. GOLDSTEIN OPENING SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH 28th, 1915, AT TEN O’CLOCK, IN GALLERIES 25, 26, 28 AND 30, IN THE WEST WING, AT THE FOREST PARK ART BUILDING 1874 1915 i The City Art Museum, St. Louis A Collection of Drawings A Collection of Drawings CUCH a collection as this which has been assembled by an art ^ lover of our city, and is presented for the enjoyment of St. Louis art lovers in the present exhibition by the City Art Museum, must necessarily have a considerable significance for those who are interested in the development of our city as an aesthetic center. The devotion and time necessary to the building up of such a representation of the masters, the long study, and continual watching for “the opportunity,” the care required in successfully drawing upon so many sources of acquisition, the constant thought that must be given to his avocation by the collector, all this is in itself a gratifying testimony to the genuine art love that exists in St. Louis. It seems obvious that we now are stepping into a new epoch of St. Louis as an art center, and an era which will be marked by the large numbers of discerning people who love and possess works of art. The collectors, of this epoch, must be not only devoted but also discerning. And it seems obvious that one of the chief services which the collector will render to the city will be in co-operation with the City Art Museum, to deepen and widen popular enjoyment and popular knowledge of the arts by providing the material for appropriate educational exhibitions. How extensive have been the researches and the labors of the collector in the present instance may be judged by the studiously inclined, in the four galleries now devoted to this display in the City Art Museum. There are shown nearly four hundred examples, these representing but a part of Dr. Max. A. Goldstein’s Collection of Drawings and Prints. These works have not been acquired in a wholesale way, but often piece by piece, with the necessity for studying down the problems of authentication as well as of merit. The story of the assembling of such a collection would be instructive and interesting. There is in each new acquisition The City Art Museum, St. Louis the human and personal note, which so often gives a delightful attractiveness to the experiences of a collector, and which gains in many instances because it has been experienced in some way by more than one connoisseur, whose feet have gone before in search of the same example. The stamps of various notable old collections add their own interest, brought together as they are, in another world, by the St. Louis art lover. Some of the old collections drawn upon are those of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sir Peter Lely, Lord Rowan, George Earl McCartney, and Colonel S. Harrison. From Lely’s collection are the Guido Reni “Apollo Dancing with the Muses,” and the Van Dyck “Madonna and Child.” From Lord Rowan’s collection are many of the Italian examples, including the “Young Bacchus” by Caravaggio, the “Judgment of Solomon” by Paul Veronese, the “Madonna and Child” by del Sarto, and works by Tintoretto, Salvatore Rosa, del Piombo, Bassano, Guercino, Baroccio, Domenichino, Della Bella, Canalletto, Batoni, Vasari, Bandinelli, Polidoro, Lodivico, Carracci, and Anabale Carracci. In Lord Rowan’s collection also were some of the French, English and other drawings, including several Greek figure studies by William Blake, the “Cupid Series” of Boucher, and “The Crown or the Miter” by Goltzius. From the McCartney collection are Correggio’s “Holy Family,” Luca Guirdono’s “The Birth of the Virgin,” Sebastian Conca’s “Nativity,” “The Virgin and Child” by Charles Le Brun, the “Grotesque Musicians” by Lodovico Carracci, and other interesting things. This is to name but a few of the former collections from which these examples have been dispersed, to be finally regathered by Dr. Goldstein. To adequately write of individual examples in this collection would be quite impracticable in this foreword. A vast bibliography, in the libraries, is at the disposal of students, who by comparing the printed page of the biographer or critic with the actual handiwork of the artist may get an insight not other- wise to be obtained. Many of the subjects here presented as drawings naturally are reproduced as paintings in the illustrated works on art, and not a few are very well known to some of us, and it will be found very instructive indeed to compare these various forms which a work of art has taken in its evolution. The newly equipped reference library of the City Art Museum offers to the student public valuable facilities in this field. 6 A Collection of Drawings ARTISTS AND TITLES EDWIN A. ABBEY, R. A. and N.
