We thus see this subject of the Stem of Jesse, which was so popular in the middle ages, here once more repeated towards the termination of that period, with some arbitrary alterations, it is true, but with the purest and most elevated religious feeling at the same time ; the heads, though somewhat similar in character, display a degree of beauty, and the hands and cast of the drapery a knowledge which is quite astonishing. The head of St. John the Evangelist, one of the half-figures, is especially of the rarest delicacy; although the colouring of the flesh and drapery is cool, yet a refined harmony pervades the whole picture. The superiority of the drawing and the greater delicacy with which every portion is rendered. prove that this picture was executed somewhat later than that in Bruges.” —Waagen.
