Pictures of this Mafer are extremely rare, and highly valued in Italy; his mof celebrated Performance is the Mofaic Pavement of the Cathedral at Siena : Thefe Two Pictures are in fine Prefervation , and worthy of any Collection BRONZES. A nearly fimilar Statue in Bronze has been difcovered at Herculaneum Hercules refting from his Labours, feated on a Groupe of well-arranged Trophies A Vafe of the bell-ftiape, elegant in its Proportions, and highly enriched with Foliage: The Handles decorated with Mafques, &c. Clio Euterpe Melpomene Terpficore Erato Polymnia Calliope Thalia Urania Apollo. Inferior to the Mufes, yet may be deemed interefting to complete the Group Apollo Sauro&onus. This Subje£t was of confiderable Celebrity even amongft the Ancients. The Statue, with a Duplicate Companion, were found in dig¬ ging on the Palatine Mount. The Companion ornaments the Mufeum at the Louvre, and was Part of the Plunder at Rome: The Figure now for Sale is fuperior in many particulars, fuch as a fkilful Artift might explain. The Royal Academy of London pofleffes a Plaifter Caft of this identical Statue, as do moft of the diftinguifhed Academies on the Continent Thefe nine Figures were fele£led from, and purchafed out of two celebrated Colle£lions in Rome: The Mattei Villa and the Villa ► Negroni. This, and the great difficulty in forming an Antique Series of undoubted Mufes, accounts for the difference of Style. Each Figure is fine, but the Clio is fuperlatively excellent.
