When looking at this painting at Grosvenor House, Mrs. Siddons mentioned to the Rev. John Sandford, that Sir Joshua having observed to her, as she rose from the last sitting, that he intended to work considerably more on the face, she told him she considered it could not be improved ; and on showing her the picture when finished, he said he had taken her advice, and had not retouched the face since she last sat for it. Painted in 1784, when Mrs. Siddons was in her twenty-eighth year, for M. de Calonne, at whose sale it was bought by Wm. Smith, Esq., M.P., for Norwich, for £700. Mr. Watson Taylor next purchased it for £900, and at his sale in 1822, it was bought by the first Marquess of Westminster for 1760 guineas. A great number of repetitions of this subject exist. The twisted columns and the figure of the woman, with a basket on her head, are imitated from Raffaelle's cartoon of " The Beautiful Gate." This large painting and its companions, Nos. 114 and 115, belong to a series of nine which were painted by Rubens, when he was in Spain in 1629, by order of Philip IV, who presented them to his minister, the Duke d'Olivarez, to decorate a convent of Carmelites which he had just completed at the small town of Loeches, near Madrid. Seven of them were taken away from the Convent by the French in 1808. The other two, " The Triumph of the Church " and the " Victory of Christianity over Paganism," still remain there. While they were being borne off, the waggon that held them broke down in a muddy ditch, and some of them rolled out into the water. One, " The Triumph of Charity," was seriously injured, but was repaired, and in 1830 was in the possession of Mr. Joshua Taylor. Two others, " The Triumph of the Christian Religion," and " Elijah fed by the Ravens," were presented to the French Commandant at Loeches, in consideration of the assistance he rendered in their removal. The remaining four were purchased by M. de Bourke, the Danish Minister at the Court of Madrid, who brought them to England, and sold them, in 1818, to the first Marquess of Westminster. 40 114. — PETER PAUL RUBENS. Numerous cattle are distributed about. Rachel is represented as sitting upon the secreted images she had carried off, and excusing herself to her father for not rising. The tender-eyed Leah is behind, leading her children, and Jacob is showing Laban round the tent. Painted for the Marquis de Villamanrique, from whom it passed to the Marquis de Santiago, at Madrid. It was purchased from the Santiago family, and brought to England, during the first French revolution, by Mr. Coesveldt, about the year 1810; when it was bought by the first Marquess of Westminster. The subject first intended for this picture was the life of David, with the landscape, or background, to be put in by Iriarte of Seville. Murillo wished Iriarte to make the landscapes, that he might insert the figures afterwards. On the other hand, Iriarte contended for having the figures put in first by Murillo. To get rid of this difficulty, Murillo executed the whole himself, taking the scene from Jacob's history instead of David's. G 42 ANTE-DRAWING ROOM. 117. — THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH. Born 1727, died 1788.
