Marsyas), both sixteenth-century Italian work, and a smaller pair on the mantelpiece representing Alexander cutting the Gordian knot (probably Venetian), and an Athlete, an Italian copy of a celebrated statue by Agasias of Ephesos. Lent by George Salting, Esq. On a side table is a casket of hammered silver repousse" work with medallions at each end, probably South German, sixteenth century. Lent by Sir J. Charles Robinson, C.B. On the top of one of the French cabinets are two bronze Angels (sixteenth cen- tury Italian), Lent by S. E. In the recess at the end, and on the large cassone against the centre of the long wall, is a series of ancient Chinese damascened bronzes, several of them reputed to be upwards of one thousand years old. On the table near the door stand A Florentine Marriage Coffanetto ; modern reproduction, perhaps the work of Giovacchino Corsi of Siena. A red whole-coloured Chinese porcelain bottle. A walnut brass-bound Coffrefort. Lent by R. H. Benson, Esq. Several smaller bronzes are exhibited by G. H. Boughton, Esq., R.A., and two important figures, one of Moses, the other a Venus, are shown by George Salting, Esq. The former is placed on the mantelpiece, the latter on the large Cassone. Both are sixteenth century Italian, the Moses either by Michelangelo or of his school. and Decorative Furniture l 5 FURNITURE The large cassone, or chest, in the centre of the long wall is decorated with Florentine paintings of 1467, the year that Giuliano Carnesecchi married Cassandra Lanfredini, both of whose arms appear on the front. The original painting by Pollajuolo, from which the copy at the left hand is taken (Heracles and Nessus the Centaur), is now in the Jarves Collection at New Haven, U.S.A. The centre panel represents " The Triumph of David," by an unknown artist, and the two end subjects are taken from contemporary drawings or paintings of Antonio Pollajuolo, also by an unknown hand. Lent by Sir Frederick Cook, Bart., M.P. On the left of the fireplace is another cassone with a painting perhaps by Francesco di Giorgio of Siena (1439- 1502), representing " The Triumph of Chastity." Lent by Sir Frederick Cook, Bart., M.P. On the right of the fireplace is an Italian cassone from Romagna, with inlaid or intarsia work (circa 1 540). Lent by Sir J. Charles Robinson, C.B. Upon this cassone are two red whole-coloured Chinese porcelain bottles, with brass mounts, and modern reproduction by Cantagalli of an Urbino plate. Lent by R. H. Benson, Esq. Next to this stands a wooden chest with incised (sgraffiato) work. Italian, first half fifteenth century. Lent by Sir Frederick Cook, Bart., M.P. Against the corresponding wall stands a Spanish cabinet of about 1560-70, with rich brass mountings. Lent by Wyndham Cook, Esq. On each side of the central cassone is a fine French cabinet of carved walnut- wood, in the style of Jacques Androuet, called Ducerceau (about 1 520-1 580). Both lent by T. Foster Shattock, Esq. In the centre of the recess at the end of the gallery is an Italian cabinet of inlaid 16 Collection of Pictures, Drawings, Bronzes, etc. wood, on each side of which stand two old English chairs, lent by Lieut.-Col. Lyons, who also lends a three-cornered Chippendale Table, with folding sides, and other chairs of the same set, as above. In front of this stands an oak table, richly carved, Lent by Sir Frederick Cook, Bart., M.P. on which stands a wooden Casket applique with bone plaques. Italian, from the Carmichael Collection.
