Club Men gf Columbus In Caricature NINETEEN HUNDRED ELEVEN Drawings by W. A. IRELAND H. J. WESTERMAN RAY ROHN W. A. IRELAND DIRECTOR FOR ASSOCIATED COLUMBUS CARTOONISTS PRINTED BY THE ROYCROFTERS AT THEIR SHOP, WHICH IS IN EAST AURORA, ERIE COUNTY, NEW YORK, DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2014 https://archive.org/details/clubmenofcolumbuOOirel FOREWORD BY ARTHUR CHARLES JOHNSON, SR. Managing Editor, Columbus Evening Dispatch OOKS long ago acquired the habit of containing prefaces, so you can not escape, dear reader, no matter how much you wish to turn at once to the entertainment awaiting you in the caricatures between these covers. Prefaces, like the kiss and the wheelbarrow, have been little improved upon since they were invented. Brevity is their chief claim to any degree of excellence, and their only excuse; so we will not detain you with this dry shell of the nut, but permit you to get at the kernel within. Line by line, stroke by stroke, the Associated Cartoonists of Columbus have laid the lights and shadows about these men of the Arch City, who make the wheels go 'round in the various lines of human endeavor they represent. The artists have done them in black and white for your edification, and Fra Elbertus has done them into a book for your convenience. The men here represented are the dynamic forces of Columbus — the "live wires" if we may be permitted the slang; Columbus is the dynamic force of Ohio; Ohio is the dynamic force of the United States; the United States is the dynamic force of the world. What fault can therefore be found with the reasoning that proves these men the dynamic forces of the world ? Here they are. They look at you not as photographs retouched by the hand of idealism, but as tracings of the virile pen. He who starts a smile on the highroad to a hearty laugh, or he who brings forth a tear born of a pure sentiment, has done something for the world. It is our hope that as you turn these pages you may learn some lesson of strength in these faces; it is our hope that you may appreciate in a measure the painstaking labor the caricatures represent; it is our hope that you may even laugh for pure enjoyment at some of the little touches of human nature. If you can enter into the spirit of the cartoonists' intentions, then their labor has not been in vain. HE MEN WHO MADE THE CARICATURES W. A. IRELAND H. J.
