All which are now exhibiting at Saville PIou fe, on the North Side of Leicefter Square, previous to the Sale thereof. LONDON, May i, i 797. K’- 1 v . PREFACE. A S a connoiffeur of the fine arts, Monf. de Calonne, the collector and late proprietor of the Mufeum about to be defcribcd, is fufficiently known by the fale of, perhaps, the moft fuperb collection of paintings, prints* drawings, See. Sec. that was ever difpofed of by an individual in this, or indeed in any other country : but his attachment for, and knowledge of, the productions of nature, may poflibly be known but to few. By an attentive perufal of the following fhects, however, as alfo of the Conchology of Monf. de Favanne (a work, begun under the autpices of Monf. de Calonne, but not completed in confequence df the troubles in France), and by a careful examination of the Mu- feum itfelf, his celebrity as a collector of natural hiftory will at lead appear to vie with, if it will not even be thought fuperior to his fkill in the arts. His fortune was ample, and his fituation as a minificr of France afforded him the means of ob- taining early information whenever curious articles were to be difpofed of in any country of Europe, whether brought thither by the different circum- navigators, or they were the contents of cabinets A 2 ccliedsd iv PREFACE. collected by preceding amateurs. By the forme? means he obtained the mod: rare and curious pro- ductions brought from Africa, the Eaft and Weft Indies, the iflands of Ceylon, Amboyna, and Borneo ; from China, Peru, New Zealand, and the newly difcovered iflands in the fouthern ocean. By the latter means he procured every thing which he did not before pofTefs in greater perfection from the cabinets of Prince Charles of Lorraine, M. Blonde! d’Azaincourt, M. de Montriblou, M. dfe Nanteuil,. M. le C. De la Tour d’Auvergne, Mynheer Gevcrs, the late Duchefs Dowager of Portland, and many others. It mud, however, be obferved, that this collection will not be diftinguifhed fo much for the number of articles as for the care with which they have been felectcd ; and-it is proper alfo to remark, that of its parts the Conc.hologia, or Shells, feems to have been M. de Calonne’s principal attraction y for amongft them will be found a greater number of the mod perfect and unique fpecimens than will be feen in any other collection ; every piece that was mutilated, of a bad colour, or too common, has been excluded. It is certainly not too much to aflert the luperiority of this part to every thing of the kind in Europe. It is matter of great regret to the proprietors, that owing to the length of time required to compile the following fheets having been confidcrably greater than they were at all aware of, but little more than x . to- Preface. * the fhells will be found defcribed. In arranging thefe, the various genera have been taken from the mod approved writers upon Conchology ; to which it has been found neceffary to add lome new ones. The number of fpecies having much increafcd of late years, it teemed requifite that many of the old divitions of the genera fhould be formed into di ft i n <5t families ; and as they become more nu- merous, it will no doubt be neceflary to conftitute ft ill more genera, as Fabritins and others have done in Entomology. The Linnsean-name of each fpecies, where it could be afeertained, or was not indelicate, is annexed, as well as the fynonyms of other authors, and tbofe of the late Dr. Solander, from an unpub- lifhedMS. of his deferiptive of the fhells in the Port- land Cabinet ; with fome few obfervations on the manners of the animals of particular fpecies ; their degree of rarity, or other remarkable particulars* 1 hole from the Mufeum of the late Duchefs Dowager of Portland are marked M. P. with the number of the lot in the Catalogue thereof, where they are defcribed. For a defeription of the Corals reference has been made to Ellis's Zoophyte, where the Linnaeau. and other names may be found. The editor hopes, that his confeffion of being but little acquainted with the learned languages, will be received as an apology for fuch improprieties in the generic or fpecific names as he fears will be found. The {hells of the genera, or families, 8 and 9,, are remark- able for having a number of cells, or chambers, proceed* ing from a fmall beginning, by a moft beautiful gradation, to the largeft fize they have attained. Only the laft, or biggeft, of thefe cells, which is that occupied by the animal when in a living ftate, is vifible till the outer lhell is taken off. Thefe cells communicate with each other by a Syphunculus, or pipe, which in the crozier is teftaceous, and placed on the inner fide, and in the Nautilus partly flielly, and partly a film, and placed in the centre of the partition which divides one cell from another. This pipe is not continued throughout, but goes only from one cell to another. Various have been the conjedtures refpedHng the ufe of thofe cells unoccupied by the animal ; but the moft prevailing opinion is, that they are for the purpofe of buoying the {hell to the fiirface of the fea, or finking it, at the pleafure of the animal, to procure it food, or efcape danger, by the introdudtion or expulfion of either air or water. It has long been a doubt if the Nautili fail on the furface of the fea, as the Argonautas, or Paper Sailors, hereafter mentioned, do; yet if we confider the outer ftrudture of their {hells, and their great refcmblance to the Argonauts?, it 6 Genus IX. ^ATJfiLtrs. Vitrea— Le Vitree, ou La Lanterne— GlafTy, or Lantern— Guinea ?— Only one other of this extremely delicate and curious fpecies is known in Europe, which was in the pofleffion of the late celebrated Mr. Lyonet, of the Elague, whofe fine collection of (hells was lart year fold there. The extreme point of the beak of Mr. Lyonet’s fpecimen was not fo complete as M. Calonne’s. The Species of the Genus Argonauta are efteemed as fome of the moft curious of the Teftacea, whether we regard the manners of the animals which inhabit them, or the delicacy and elegant form of their fhells. Like thofe of the Nautilus family, they fvvim on the furface of the waves, each fpreads a thin film for a fail, and puts forth arms, feJ&a^on each fide, which ferve for oars, in which manner they glide along, but fink inftantaneoufiy if but a fhadow pafs over them. The firft idea of the art of navigation is fuppofed to have been taken from thefe little failors, and it is to this family, one fpecies of which is certainly the Nautilus of the ancients, that the famous Mr. Pope alludes, in thofe well- known lines of his “ Eflay on Man,'* “ Learn of the little Nautilus to fail, “ Spread the thin oar, and catch the driving gale.” The {hells of the Paper Sailor are not chambered, as the Nautili are, nor are they pearly within.
