No. 1. Supplement TO THE CJ.B IJVE T~ MAKERS’ bonbon BOOK OF PRICES. Supplement TO THE CABINET-MAKERS’ SLottUoti BOOK OF PRICES , AND DESIGNS OF CABINET-WORK, CALCULATED FOR THE CONVENIENCE Of CABINET-MAKERS IN GENERAL? * ILLUSTRATED WITH TWO COPPER-PLATES . — — By GEORGE ATKINSON AND WILLIAM SOMERVILLE, CABINET-MAKERS. Honuotn PRINTED BY C. BARBER, 1 5, FLEET-STREET, FOR THE AUTHORS; AND SOLD AT NO. 3, DOLPHIN-COURT, HOLBORN. 1805 . [entered at stationers’-hall.] DEDICATION. To the Masters and Journeymen Cabinet-Makers in London and Westminster. GENTLEMEN, As it has been along and just complaint, both by Employers and their Workmen, that the Books of Prices was either silent on the modern pieces of Cabinet Furniture, introduced in the present day, or mentioned in such a vague manner, as made them often liable to gross misconstructions. The following Supplement of Prices will be found to comprise the greatest part of the New Fashions executed in the Metropolis, on the present day. The Compilers have no other object in view ; but the joint interests of the Em- ployers and their Workmen. The pressing necessity for such a selection of prices, can be best ascertained, by the irritated and almost irreconcileable disputes that daily take place to the great inconvenience of both parties ; and to prevent such disagreeable occurrences again in future is the sole object of the Compilers, in presenting to the Trade the following criterion. We have spared no trouble, nor expence in the completing this necessary object, and it will be found by investigating the Work itself, that the joint interest of both parties has been carefully considered. Indeed, we have likewise to observe, that men of the greatest genius and most distinguished abilities in the Trade, have applied themselves with the utmost assiduity, to the dissecting of the modern prices of Cabinet Manufacture ; and fur- nished the Compilers with minute and accurate manuscripts of their labours. The disinterested assistance we have all along received from both Employ- ers and Journeymen, requires our particular Thanks; and as the former Books have been published at different periods, every succeeding Compila- 6 DEDICATION. tion must be useful for correcting the mistakes, and supplying the defects of that which preceded it. Care has also been taken to point out all the parts that are any way intricate or dubious, with particular and concise explanations, so as to pre- vent any misconstructions, and to reduce the meaning to an uniform and consistent standard; to which last article, we have been particularly atten- tive. In fine, it shall only be added, that as we have endeavoured to have this Supplement as complete as possible; so as to correspond in some measure to its title, we leave the merit of it to be canvassed by that impar- tial and honourable body of mechanics, who are most interested in its me- rit — hoping for their favourable acceptance of our labours. Gentlemen, We remain with the greatest Respect, Your most obedient and devoted Servants, THE AUTHORS. N. B. It is the intention of the Authors to continue this Supplement by succeeding Numbers, as necessity may require. INDEX. A CANTERBURY - - - .
