JOHN HEYWOOD, Deansgate and Ridgefield, Manchester ; 1, Paternoster Buildings, LONDON. ' THE J. PAUL GETTY MUSEUM UBPAPy PREFACE. EORGE MORLAND was born in the Haymarket, June 26th, 1763, and was the son of Henry Robert Morland, an artist of considerable talent, and much respected by all who knew him. George showed very early symptoms of decided genius ; and it was highly gratifying to his father to perceive so marked an inclination for a pursuit to which he had destined him from his birth. He had no other instructor than his father, to whom he was articled when he was fourteen, and during his apprenticeship his application was assiduous and exemplary. He was not permitted by his father to prosecute his studies regularly at the Academy, as his drawings and copies of Dutch and Flemish pictures found ready purchasers. “ George was brought up”, says Redgrave, “with more than ordinary strictness and regularity;” whence came outbreaks, first secret and then open, rebellion against the father’s sordid discipline, finally the abandonment of home. On leaving home he went to reside at a pleasant hamlet on the Harrow Road, called Kensell Green. Here, in a pretty house belonging to William Ward, the celebrated mezzotinto engraver (brother of James Ward, R. A., and himself afterwards an Associate), he conceived an affection for his landlord’s sister, Miss Nancy Ward, whom he shortly afterwards married, and about the same time William Ward married George’s sister Maria. Unfortunately his marriage did not redeem George Morland from the evil habits 4 he had formed. He gave himself up to the most reckless dissipa- tion, was the constant companion of jockeys, hostlers, prize fighters, &c., and the remainder of his life is a series of stories of intemper- ance, wasted energies, debts, and prisons. He painted with great facility, and his paintings brought him both fame and profit. His pictures were always readily sold, almost before they left the easel. Morland has been copied oftener than any other painter, and it is now very difficult to distinguish a copy from the original. It is stated that a dealer who employed him kept a staff of five or six copyists without the artist’s knowledge, and that after dinner — for Morland only painted in the morning — these men would reproduce, on so many different canvasses, the picture on which the master had just worked. He was at his best about 1790. He had full confidence in his powers, and an extensive knowledge of nature. His subjects were well adapted to his talents. His studies were confined to the animal figures, and the more obvious parts of his pictures. His scenes are such as he was most accustomed to ; being taken for the most part from the south of England. His best produc- tions are his stable interiors, and he was very successful in delineating pigs, guinea-pigs, donkeys, cows, dogs, rabbits, and old, unkempt, rough, and clumsy horses — a white one being an especial favourite of his. Although so successful in depicting animals and scenes of rustic life, he was by no means deficient in pourtraying female beauty — in fact, there are very few painters who have left behind them more delightful and lovely specimens of the fair ladies of their day than George Morland. As a painter of nature, he is now recognised as one of the foremost painters of the English school ; his pictures, whenever they come into the market, command a very high price in comparison with what was originally paid for them, and the mezzotint, and other engravings from his works, will bring pounds, where they brought shillings five and twenty years ago, and are still rapidly increasing in price. 5 When about forty, he became paralysed on the left side, and could earn little. Finally arrested, at the suit of a publican, he was confined in a spunging house in Air Street, Clerkenwell, and there died October 29th, 1804. His poor wife, who came to the knowledge of his death two days after it happened, expired a few hours afterwards, and was buried in the same grave with him, in the burial-ground of St. James’s Chapel, Hampstead Road. In presenting to the members of the Brasenose Club a collection of the engraved works of George Morland, by no means perfect, but thoroughly representative of all Morland’s various styles, containing as it does engravings by some of the very first mezzotint and stipple engravers of the time — notably, William Ward, John Raphael Smith, G. Keating, S. W. Reynolds, T. Gaugain, C. Knight, and others— -the Committee trust that it will tend to perpetuate a name which, although known to a certain few collectors, is not as widely known nor valued as his great genius entitles him to be.
