cc.if ^xxaM47 The interior of a stable a:.d cow-house in which are two horses, one
prey the other of a chestnut colour, standing in a stall on the right; in
the centre are several cows, the nearest one to tlie spectator is lyin^
down ; a great variety of objects common to a stable are distributed
about the place; three men are near the horses, one of them appearing
to be occupied at the manger, another has a candle in his hand, and a
third is placing provender in a rack. The prodigal is on the left side,
near the entrance to the stable, bending on one knee, his hands placed
on his breast, and looking with an expression of entreaty at a maid
servant who is close to him, feeding some pigs that are rushing with
eagerness to the trough ; beyond these are seen a waggon near a farm-
house, and two men watching horses in a pond ; the general effect
denotes sunrise. This picture is painted with extraordinary care and
great attention to detail ; the animals are correctly drawn and possess
the true characteristics of nature ; but the great charm of this produc-
tion consists in the truly affecting and pathetic expression of the
prodigal, whose position, countenance and gesture strongly mark the
compunctious working of his mind.

/SOO 34 A VIEW ON THE BRILL RIVER (or perhaps one of the

breeze and impending rain \'\)t Rt(\/]\t^\ 1 ? '^^^
On the right of the picture is a Dutch coaster, with four men on •''
board, approaching under a red mainsail and a pennant flying at the
stern. A little retired from this and more towards the left are two
other vessels of a similar description ; a long sand-bank sliows itself
on the opposite side, over which, and on other shoals, the sea beats in
foaming breakers ; three fishermen are on the bank, and near is a
Dutch lugger, tacking under main and fore sails ; more remote is a
frigate riding at anchor, and a town is faintly perceptible in the dis-
tance ; the wide expanse of dark waters is occasionally varied by
• bursts of light breaking through the wind-riven clouds, and also by the
white foam which sparkles on the crests of the waves, rendering the
surrounding gloom more palpable. This, like other works of a similar
description, evinces the true poetical feeling of the artist when
delineating scenes affecting the soul,

« ■'Xti^^i/m^ foreground a quiver full of arrows ; through an open
!£. ^.-Ti/th^ window in the background is seen another cupid near a
^ . vase with pinks
This picture is mentioned by Malvasia in his ' Felsina Pittrice "VLite
. del Pittori Bolognesi ' as one of the most admirable works of Guido ;
he states that it was painted fur a jeweller in exchanj^e for a diamond
worth 150 hcudi, the jeweller afterwards repenting his bargain. The
picture was sent to VenicCj and was there so much admired that it
fetched HOO scudi.
In 1G65 it was placed in the Duke of Mantua's Collection, and waa
then called " I! Diamante," probably in reference to the jeweller's
diamond. From the Mantua Collection it passed into the hands of the
Count Poletti, of Pozzuoli. It was subsequently purcliased by Longhi»
the celebrated engraver, who died before he finished engraving it.
Dought by Mr. Buchanan from the Collection of Chevalier Buchcron,
President of the Academy of Painting at Turin.
