 Fig. II. Shows its working parts, which consist simply of a 
 Toggle (GCf) and toothed Bar t, held together by a Spring S, 
 and worked by a Cam C, and Hook M, on the Handle H. 
 
 Pressing the handle hard back, the tooth M, is brought to 
 bear under the tooth m, on the left joint of the toggle, thus dis¬ 
 engaging the racks by raising the toothed bar i away from the 
 rack T. The movable jaw B B, can now be slid in and out, to its 
 extreme limits, with perfect ease, and an article of any size be held 
 with great power at any point between these limits, simply by plac¬ 
 ing it between the jaws of the Vice, then pressing the movable 
 jaw B B, against it and pulling the handle out. At the first 
 start of the handle outward, the tooth M slips from under the 
 tooth to, and the spring S' draws down and firmly holds the 
 toothed bar t against the rack T 7 ; as the handle is pulled 
 further outward, the cam C is brought to bear against the ridge 
 
n, thus straightening the toggle and forcing the movable jaw 
 B B, with great power against the article to be held-—hence the 
 following 
 
 Disengage the racks by pushing the handle hard back, then 
 press the movable jaw B B. against the article to be held and 
 pull the handle out. 
 
 Occasionally put a drop of oil on the Cam C, and tooth M.

 S is the lower part of the Vice, furnished with a conical ring, 
 which turns upon a corresponding conical ridge upon the bed¬ 
 plate E. A slight movement of the handle H, which turns 
 upon a bolt or stud fastened to the stock S, serves to bind these 
 conical surfaces together more than twice as firm as it is possi¬ 
 ble to bind the plane surfaces of the ordinary Swivel.
