 T Hofe who are converfant in the fine 
 Arts are without doubt informed 
 that a Painter known by the name 
 of Mafaccio lived in Florence about three hun- 
 dred and forty years ago. In his youth he difeo- 
 verd a furprifing genius of invention and it was 
 his good fortune to live at a time when the 
 Arts began to rife again, though to him is 
 principally owing the reftoration of that of 
 Painting . 
 
 Mafaccio Was bo r n in the year 1402. when 
 Brunellefco and Donatello by the firength of 
 their own genius and induftry had reftored th 
 Arts of Sculpture and Architetture , Mafaccio 
 from a fimilitude in genius , contracted an ear- 
 ly

 S I fa per tutte le Scuole , che vi è flato 
 Idi faccio Vittore in Firenze , trecenqua - 
 vanta anni fa , giovane d’ ingegno origi- 
 nale , ed inventore , ed uno di quei che najcon 
 rari fra la moltitudine imitatrice ; ed ebbe anche 
 la fortuna di nafeere in tale età , che mentre ri- 
 forgevano le altre Arti del Difegno potè a lui 
 toccare in forte la gloria di rifufeitar la Pittu- 
 ra , e che da lui le ne coliti il principio . 
 
 Mafaccio al nafeer fuo nel 1402. trovò già 
 fattifì maeflri da loro fteffi il Brunellefco e Do- 
 natello ritrovatori della Scultura e dell " Archi- 
 tettura , ingegni fub/imi , e due primi lumi nel- 
 la Storia no fi r a , e fatto amico di quefìt due 
 Filojofi per forni gli an7a di cojìumi , finche viffe

 Jy friendship with them and by their afliftance 
 he acquired great knowledge in their Arts , 
 fuch as a corre&nefs in drawing and perfpe&i- 
 ve and what till then was not cultivated , a 
 tafte for the antique , but above all , the great 
 fecret of the Art which they feem to have kno- 
 wn fo well , that of boldly imitating nature 
 and drawing from life , a pra&ife fo highly 
 approved of by all great Arrifts, though neglect- 
 ed by the ignorant . Before this the Painters 
 were unacquainted with the rules either of draw- 
 ing , Colouring , lineal or aireal perfpeftivc , 
 knew nothing of compofition , difpofition of 
 their figures or of drapery , the want of all 
 which was foon difcoverd by Mafaccio for in 
 all his works there plainly appears an attempt 
 to remedy thofe defers, befides a mafterly fre- 
 edom in his pencil till then likevife unknown 
 fo different from the difagreable fiiffnefs in the 
 horrid fpe&res of the School of Giotto and of 
 the modern greD'an Mofaicks. Mafaccio by that 
 means made a rapid progreff towards perfecting 
 the Art of Painting , fo that in about eighty 
 years after him it arrived at the greateft pitch 
 of glory in Italy . 
 
 All this has been often repeated in the 
 Treatifes on Painting , particularly by Vafan 
 and lately by Baldinucci , who fays that Mafaccio 
 began to Paint at the age of nineteen and worked 
 both at Florence and Pifa in frefco and in water 
 colours as was than praCfifed, ( the Art of Pa- 
 inting in oyl being yet unknown in Italy ) but 
 being difeontented with the Florentins who had 
 then driven out his great Protestor , old Cof- 
 mus of Medici, he went to Rome, from whence 
 however he returned as foon as he heard that 
 Cofmus was again received in Florence . He 
 then fucceded Mafolino in painting the Chapel 
 of the family of Brancacci in the Church of the 
 Carmelites , which he did not however live to 
 finish , dying in 1443. f° rl y firft year 
 
 of his age , his death was (o fudden that it ga- 
 ve great fufpicion of poifon . 
 
 He was the fon of a publick Notary , Si- 
 mone dei Guidi , a family that came from a place 
 called St Giovanni in the upper valley of the river 
 Arno where he was born and Educated and was

 buon Difegno , la Proiettiva , e qualche poca fin 
 d* allora del gufo per ! antico ; ma foprattutto 
 il gran fegreto dell Arte , che tutti a tre par che 
 fa pe If ero , di gettar fi arditamente ad imitar la na- 
 tura e ritrarla dal vivo , pratica de' grandi ar- 
 ti fi , e che da volgari per lo più fi sfugge 0 fi 
 aborre , Si dipigneva per /’ avanti ferina difegno 
 e Jen^a colorito , e non fi conofceva nè profpetti- 
 va , nè innanzi nè indietro , nè campo fifone , 
 nè accordo , nè invenzione , nè moto nelle figure , 
 nè pieghe naturali ne * panni . Di ciò s' accorfe 
 Mafaccio , come pare , in un tratto , poiché nelle 
 pitture fu e vi fi feorge fempre di ciafeuna di 
 quelle cafe i nuovi principi , 0 almeno fempre 
 qualche tentativo , oltre quella maefirevole facili- 
 ta di pennello non conofciuta per /’ avanti ; onde 
 rimafero tanto addietro ; fecchi fpettri della fcuo- 
 la di Giotto e ì mofaici Greco-barbari . Mafac- 
 cio fi vide qual paffo gigante fico fece fare in un 
 tratto alla Pittura , che per tanti anni , e avan- 
 zava così lenta , che pareva piuttofo ferma , e do- 
 po lui non impiegò più d' ottanta anni a falire 
 alla fua maggiore altezza in Italia . 
 
 Quefle cofe fono fate dette e ridette ne' no fri 
 libri con quel poco , che Giorgio Va fari, e ultima- 
 mente il Baldinucci anno raccontato di lui . Co- 
 minciò di ip. anni , e dipinfe a Firenze ed a Fifa 
 a frefco ed a tempera come fi faceva , prima che 
 qua s tmparaffe a dipignere a olio . Andò a Ro- 
 ma mal contento di Firenze , forfè fuggendo qual- 
 che perfezione de Fiorentini quando ei cacciaro- 
 no Cofimo de Medici il vecchio fuo protettore , 
 poiché appena feppe il fuo ritorno che egli corfe 
 a Firenze ove fuccejfc a Mafolino nel Carmine a 
 dipignere la Cappella Brancacci , e in quei lavori 
 morì nel 1443. di quarantun anno , così J ubi ta- 
 rn ente che fi fofpettò al /olito di veleno . 
 
 Ei fu figlio di un Notaro detto Simone dei 
 Guidi di famiglia venuta alla Citta dal C afelio 
 di S. Giovanni del Valdarno di J opra , ove egli

 called Thomas , but the Florentins on account of ■* 
 his perfonal aukwardneff and slovenlineff in his 
 drclfgave him the nickname of Mafaccio ( the 
 augmentative of accio in the Italian language 
 implying contempt) he was however of a fweet 
 difpofition, fincere and generous, never deman- 
 ding even what he had gained but when dift- 
 relled, and he was always ready to relieve others 
 when it was in his power , thefe good quali- 
 ties created envy in fome of his countrymen , 
 though it does not appear that he ever fought 
 their favour, but rather following the exam- 
 ple of Donatello, defpifed it, at the fame time- 
 that he shewed a Philofophical indolence in 
 not feeking to make a greater figure elfewhere, 
 nor was he terrified by the example of the 
 unjuft treatment which his Friend and Mailer 
 Brunellefco met with from the Florentins , but 
 contented himfelf with the latisfaflion of being 
 cfteemed by the two great men before mentio 
 ned, aud it is recorded that Brunellefco greatly 
 lamented his death on account of the loff which 
 the Art of Painting hid fufferd by it. 
 
 The Works of this excellent Arrift which 
 ought to have been preferved with the urmoft 
 care have either been totally deitroyed or much 
 damaged, lo that there is fcarcely any remain- 
 ing entire but what is in the Chapel of the 
 family of Brancacci , of which Vafari gives a 
 long defcription with filth juft encomiums as 
 shew the great eftcem they were held in , at 
 the time he wrote, when the Arts were at the 
 Greateft height and fo many great mailers li- 
 ving, it will be fufficient to fay that both Mi- 
 chelagnolo and Raphael fludied after them and 
 that the latter even condefcended to introduce 
 fome of thofe figures into his own compofitions 
 having befides learnt from Mafaccio the lured 
 method of varying his Charafters by taking 
 them from nature . 
 
 I have therefore thought that it would be 
 acceptable to the lovers of Painting and ulefull 
 to the Arts in general to prefeive the memory 
 at leali of a few of the mod chofen heads of 
 this excellent Painter, for which purpofe I have 
 traced twenty four ofthem from the originals, and 
 have reduced two of his groups into fmall , }

 lente . Egli era però dolce , docile , [incero e te- 
 nero fo , nè cercava il [no danaro Je non ajlretto

 fo di cuore , ed incapace di fare altrui male. For- 
 fè furono le fuc virtù , che non gli permifero di 
 trovar gtmfta tra’ Fiorentini , del che non fi leg- 
 ge che ei fi accoraffe , anpi full' efempio forfè di 
 Donatello , ft ne rife , e mofirò la fua manfuetu- 
 dine e indolenza fìlofofica nel non cercare altrove 
 di' far più figura . Nè par che lo fpaventajfe l’iniquo 
 trattamento che ei vide fare al fuo compagno e 
 maejlro Filippo Brunellefco ; ebbe però il confor- 
 to cf effere filmato almeno da quei grandi uomi- 
 ni ; e del Brunellefco fi fa eh’ et di fé che mol- 
 to fi era perfo nella fua morte . 
 
 D’ uomo it grande le opere che dovrebbero 
 almeno confervarfi come monumenti , fono fate gii 
 dijlrutte o imbiancate le più , nè vi re fa quafi 
 altro che le pitture a frefett nella Cappella dei 
 Brancacci , le quali forje più dell’ altre dovreb- 
 bero confervarfi . Il fiafari che le deferive lun- 
 gamente con tanta lode , c infegna a /limarle , men- 
 tre ci fa vedere quanto erano valutate fino nel 
 fuo tempo , che fu il colmo di noftr arte , ed in 
 cui vivevano valent ’ uomini , che or non fono , 
 fra’ quali bajla rammentare Micbtlagnolo e Raf- 
 faello che vi /ludi arano ; e quefi’ ultimo non ha 
 sdegnato di fervirfi fin dell’ iftcfje figure , ed im- 
 parò da Mafaccio anche il più ficuro modo di e- 
 Jprimere la varietà de caratteri col ritrarle fein- 
 pre dal vero . 
 
 lo dunque ho creduto di far cofa grata a’ cu- 
 rio fi della no /Ira Storia ed utile all’ Mete , dì con- 
 finarne almeno la memoria pubblicando una J celta 
 per faggio in /lampa di tejle da me Jle/fo atten- 
 tamente lucidate ed incife , e due gruppi in pic-

 having attempted by a Pitforefque manner of 
 engraving to preferve the ftile and the fimpli- 
 city of the frefco , which does not require the 
 exatfnelf or the minute touches of a more accu- 
 rate engraver . Among the figures in thofe gro- 
 ups it is eafy to difeover that of St Paul, which 
 Raphael has often introduced into his own 
 works , and among the heads , ( which accor- 
 ding to the Pra&ife of Mafaccio are all por- 
 traits ) he has introduced his own into the pi- 
 cture which reprefents Peter and Simon the Ma- 
 gician , as it plainly appears to have been done 
 from a looking Glafs. Another portrait of Ma- 
 faccio, tho not from the fame original , has been 
 lately engraved for a Book entitled Elogi de 
 Pittori , and published here under the direction 
 of Sig. Ignazio Hughford, well known for his 
 judgement and praftife in Painting as well as 
 for the large Colletfion of Pi&ures which he is 
 pofsefsed of. There is likewife a third original 
 portrait of this Author painted on a tile, not 
 unlike that which I have engraved , of which 
 mention is made by Cinelli in his Difcrip- 
 tion Gf Florence , among the Pi&ures of Mar- 
 quis Torregiani , which colle&ion is now by 
 inheritance in the palace of Marquis Gerini .

 te il S. Paolo che ha fatto poi tanta figura rifatto 
 put d' una volta da Raffaello , e fra le tante , 
 che fon tutte ritratti , fecondo il co fiume di Ma- 
 faccio , fi vedrà il fuo proprio prefo dalla Sto- 
 ria di Simon Mago , la qual te fa fòla fià in 
 modo che mofìra ejfere il fuo ritratto fatto da 
 lui alla fpera . Fra gli Elogj de * Pittori feelti , 
 che fi van pubblicando fot to la direzione del Sig • 
 Ignaro Hughford Pittor nojìro , noto per la fua- 
 abilità e perizia , e per la raccolta de Quadri , 
 che ei p offe de , veggo il Ritratto di Mafaccio 
 fampato non diffimile dal mio , benché venga da 
 diverfo originale . Vi è ancora in Firenze una 
 ter'ta te fa originale di non diverfe fembiange , 
 dipinta in tegolo , e rammentata dal Cinelli fra 
 i Quadri del Mar chef e Carlo Torri giani p a [fata 
 ora per eredità in Cafa del Marcheje Gerini .
