The above represents a reception at the White House in the time of' Lincoln. As a work possessing great historical interest, actual sittings having been given to the artist by the noted persons represented, some of whom are no more—Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Stanton, Edward Everett, Jas. T. Brady, and the lamented General Thomas, all having sat for this picture. The large painting, of which this is the original, was purchased for $25,000 for presentation to General Grant, but was destroyed by fire. The present painting occupied the artist over two years, at a cost of over $5,000 for material, in its composition, sittings, &c.., of the distinguished persons represented. The scene is taken immediately after the second inaugural, and represe ts in the most pleasing manner prominent persons in that notable period. Its Statesmen, Generals, Admirals, Authors, Lawyers and Ladies are here given. It may be mentioned in this con¬ nection that Mr. Rothermel, who is conceded to be one of the greatest historical painter in this country, is now engaged upon his great work, “ The Battle of Gettysburg,” for the Capitol, for which lie receives the sum of $30,000. The only other picture ever sold at auction in this country, by the artist, was in the collection of Mr. John Wolf, and although a masterly work, is considered by no means equal to this.
