Years have passed since the commencement of this Collection of Pictures by Mr. Alexander White, of Chicago. With means to gratify every wish, large experience, taste and discrimi¬ nation, and a laudable ambition to bring to his home whatever in Art could teach, or be useful and elegant, every opportunity to secure characteristic examples of the best Artists of the time was embraced with a zest and enthusiasm, which can be appreciated by those only who have striven for a like result. Many of the finer works were ordered of the Artists directly, and during a visit to Europe last winter, several of the Rarest Gems in the Collection, which would of themselves have formed a Gallery of Art at once worthy of the owner and his chosen home—the. “ Garden City,” were with difficulty secured. On the Eighth of October occurred a calamity which appalled every human heart. The devouring demon of flame swept down upon a thousand luxurious homes in the city of Chicago, and consumed their treasures ; and thus these precious examples of Modern Art, the result of immense labor, and care, and thought—Pictures which have made their Authors illustrious— are offered for public competition, with the hope that their value and rarity will be appreciated by lovers of Art, who will now have the oportunity of securing to themselves treasures which ordinarily would be difficult, and in some cases impossible, to procure.
