The great success which has attended the sale of our Anti- Corrosion'* Paint in all parts of the world has naturally produced imitations, none of which can be compared with the original invention for durability, and other qualities which have rendered it so famous. As a protection to the public against imitations, all casks and packages of our Paint bear the Trade Mark on the outside — REGISTERED TRADE MARK. while the contents are secured wiihin by the Special Guarantee Label, printed in black and red on a yellow ground. Foreign buyers, when indenting for our manufactures, should always specify Carsons.” This Label has to 'he Urn open 'before the Paint can be reached. Stands Extremes of Heat and Cold. 4 WALTER CARSON & SONS, Anti-Corrosion Paint, The Anti-Corrosion Taint has had an extensive sale both at home and abroad for upwards of a century, arKl is recognised by many eminent engineers as the most durable protection lor every descri[)tion of Ironwork. It was selected for painting the Forth Bridge at the time of erection, and has been used on numerous other large bridges and structures in all parts of the world. It is the best possible preservative for woodwork, and where adopted, a saving of more than 50 per cent, may be effected compared with ordinary ])aint. When ap|)lied to the exterior of conservatories, in dry weather when the work is free from moisture, it will be found to be much more durable than White Lead, and is not so liable to blister and wash off. Residential property requiring protection, such as walls made of Brick, Stone, and Compo., can be rendered impervious to damp by a careful external application of this Paint during the summer months, and if used in accordance with the directions enclosed in each package, it adheres firmly, forming an extremely hard and stone-like surface. The raj:)id decomposing action of Sea Air upon White Lead and other Paint is familiar to all residents near the coast. This is, without doubt, due to the powerful oxidizing elements contained in this atmosphere. The Anti-Corrosion Paint is so prepared that the action of oxygen produces no perceptible change ; in fact, the Paint may be described as oxidized in the process of manufactuie. It is generally accepted as the Paint least affected by the intluences of the Sea Air. Used exclusively on all Lifeboat Stations con- tinuously since 1877. Testimonials, see pages 10—13. Stands Extremes of Heat and Cold. LONDON AND DUBLIN. 5 ' NUMBER OP COATS REQUIRED. For new Ironwork, and work of everv description which has heen before painted, two coats are sufficient ; new Woodwork requires three coats ; and porous substances, such as Brick, Stucco, Soft Stone, &c., four coats. PRIMING. When Painting New Work, Cement, Stucco, or where there is much absorption, it is advisable either to use the first coat very thin, or apply a coating of our Priming Colour, supplied at 30s. per cwt., mixed with Boiled Oil, in the proportion of 12 gallons of Oil to I cwt. of Priming. When Painting Green, Blue, or Black, it is strongly recom- mended to use Light Lead Colour for the first, and where necessary, second coat. The Light Lead must always be used as priming for Green on new Ironwork. PAINT POTS. It being very necessary to keep Paint well mixed during use, we particularly recommend our Paint Pots, which are specially adapted to the Anti-Corrosion. They are made of Tin, and fitted with a mixer, which, being occasionally moved, effectually prevents sediment. Clreulap Half-Gallon Paint Pots (Tin) without Mixer, Is. each. BTo Grindinsf or Straining required. 6 DIRECTIONS FOR USE. • • • • • f Full directions and particulars for the proper mixing of the Anti-Corrosion Paint are enclosed in every package ; these are exceedingly simple, and are made out in a form easily comprehensible to those unskilled in the mixing of Paints, The Anti-Corrosion Paint is a Powder containing all NECESSARY DRIERS, and the only preparation needed is to mix it with the Special Oil Mixture, as follows > — White, Stone Colours ... I have pleasure in informing you that after a severe test it is found that your Paints are of good quality, and likely to prove very satisfactory both for internal and external work. Francis B. Hannafordy Esq.y Chief Engineer y Grand Trunk Railway of Canaday Montreal. November ist, 1869. The Anti-Corrosion Paint furnished by you I have used on wooden ar.d iron bridges, also on other works subjected to the rigidity and variations of our climate, together with the inside of stations. In these several capacities the Paint has fulfilled its recommendations. (Fourteen years later.) May isth, 1883. It gives me pleasure to say that your Paints give every satisfaction — in fact, are the only ones our experience proves to be efficient, hence economical. We have tried nearly every other kind of paint for iron bridges, with the result that we fall back on that of your manufacture. Mr. C. S. JoneSy Painter and Grainery Burwoody near Sydney y New South Wales. A customer of mine has just shown me some work that was done four years since with your Paint. I must acknowledge that I have not seen any kind of paint stand so well in this climate— the majority of paints in use seem to lose their medium in less than two years. Natal Government Railways, General Manager’s Office, Durban. Your Anti-Corrosion Paints have been exclusively used on these Rail wavs for the past six years. ^ A. G. Wynne, Esq., Colonial Surveyor, Grand Turk, West Indies. For preserving Stone and Brickwork, priming Walls, and excluding damp from Interior Walls of Houses. ■ This Solution soaks into the wall, and effectually fills up all ? pores through which damp can penetrate, leaving a good surface on ^ which either paint or paper can be safely applied. It can easily be . used, lx)th internally and externally, with but little discolouration of the wall, and this soon disappears. It is also an excellent' pre- servative for stone and brickwork. In cases of ground damp, caused ^ by bad foundations to the walls, application of the Solution is sure ' to prove beneficial, even if it does not effect a permanent cure. Walls of unpainted brick, stone, or compo, affected by damp, should receive a coat of Solution in preference to ordinary priming. It has the same effect in preventing absorption in the succeeding coat of paint. DIRECTIONS FOR USE. The Solution to be applied in dry weather, with an ordinary paint brush, and to be well rubbed into the work. Two coats are necessary, the second coat to be applied when the first is hard. An interval of 24 hours is usually sufficient. One gallon covers about 20 square yards. PRICE 5s. PER GALLON. The Varnish is applied in the same manner as Patent Knotting, and dries hard within one hour. It must in all cases be applied to the bare walls ^ and all paint or paper must be removed before it is used. One coat is sufficient. PRICE 7s. 6d. PER aALLON. These Stains are largely increasing in public favour, and are rapidly taking the place of the old-fashioned Water Stains, which after application require to be sized and varnished. We would particularly point out that, although we manufacture both kinds, we strongly recommend Oil Varnish Stains for general purposes in preference to Spirit Varnish Stains generally offered for sale. They are not so liable to crack, and are much easier to apply to large surfaces such as floors. The chief objection to Spirit Stains is that they set so quickly that in covering large surfaces dark ridges are observable where the edges of the work are joined. Spirit Stains are, however, very useful for patching worn parts of floors, etc., as they may safely be walked over in two or three hours. Unless otherwise specified in the order, we make a rule of supplying Oil Varnish Stain. Very special attention is directed to our Brushes, which are of unusually fine quality, and charged at an extremely moderate price. i he Brushes sold in the country are too often largely adulterated with fibre, horsehair, &c., while ours are guaranteed to be entirely of bristle, and are manufactured in the very best style. Our system of sending out the Brushes bridled ready for use will be found very convenient to amateur painters. The above are the Brushes generally used in applying the Anti- Corrosion Paint— the Round, the Oval, and the Sash Tool. The oval shape is recommended to the non-profesdonal painter, as it is more easily used. Without a bridle — indicated by the short line in the engraving — 3, new brush could not be used, on account of the length and flexibility of the bristles ; when the brush is partly worn the bridle must be reduced, and finally removed. These Oils are pure hydro-carbons, chemically neutral, having no corrosive action upon any metal with which they come ^ in contact. Their high flash point renders spontaneous combustion impossible, and their fluid condition in the coldest weather is a special recommendation when compared with animal oils. They have been in constant use for many years, and from the numerous testimonials received from large consumers, we can safely assert that they rank among the first, while their economy over cheaper oils is quickly shown by their greater viscosity, the consumption being in proportion smaller.
