Panel. 79 x 72. r.(4irvj^.^ The parents of St. Wilgifortis wishing to force upon her a distasteful marriage, she prayed to be delivered from it, and in answer to her prayers a beard grew on her face. She was called by the common people " St. Uncumber," because women who wished to be delivered from troublesome husbands were in the habit of offering oats at her Altar, praying that the horses might stumble and break their husbands' necks. There is a representation of her on the side-wing of a Triptych in the Cathedral of Lucca, but in this the Chalice on which she stands is on an Altar. This Picture is wrongly described in Crowe and Cavalcaselle's " History of Painting," Murray, 1864, Vol. 2, p. 524, as "Christ on the Cross"; and also by Waagen,— Art Treasures of Great Britain.
