REYNOLDS 64 Christ and the Woman of Samaria at the Well, and the Disci- ples and other Figures approaching to them. A well- known chef d’oeuvre of the Master, of little more than cabinet size, which was formerly in the Orleans collection. The subject has been etched by Annibale Carracci himself 5 - and by Carlo Marratti, and engraved by various Artists The Magdalen accosted by an Infant Angel, the Drapery con- sisting chiefly of the covering of her Couch, hastily thrown across her, seems to imply, that she is listening to a Morn- ing Vision, and while it engages her attention, she is tread- ing on a Casket, the Jewels from which are spread upon the Floor A Holy Family Exterior of a Farm-house, with many Villagers assembled to view Four Peasants dancing in a Ring to a Bag-piper mounted on a Cask. In the distance are a Village and a Silvery Landscape, with a beautiful Sky. A' spirited, clear, and admirable Specimen A CALM, with a Frigate at Anchor, a Shallop approaching her, and other Vessels beautifully disposed ; a clear and brilliant Sky. This Picture, for delicacy of touch, for truth of effect, and sweetness of tone, is one of the most perfect productions of this unrivalled Master’s pencil A Vase of Flowers. One of the most exquisite performances of the Master ; for the Taste with which the Group is com- posed, and for the truth and delicacy of the execution. It is on a yellow ground, and of the best time of Van Huy- sum. It was painted for the late Mr. Gilderraeester, from whose collection it was purchased A Group of Fruits, admirably paintedTrom Nature. The Com- panion Picture PORTRAIT of MRS. SIDDONS as the TRAGIC MUSE. Terror and Pity, the Ministers of the Tragic Muse, wait beside her Chair, with the Bowl and Dagger, and arc represented as Visionary Forms, in a half tint, which is beautifully in unison with a cloudy and tempestuous sky. An opening from the apartment to a Garden or Terrace behind him, admits a freshness and air that contribute a very sweet relief to the simple colouring of the Picture. This fine chef d’oeuvre is from the Refectory of the ve- nerable Fathers at Seville Jason pouring the Liquor of Enchantment upon the Dragon. The celebrated original Picture, well-known by Engra- vings from it, which was formerly in the collection of the Duke of Chandos, and afterwards in that of the Earl of Besborough, at Roehampton. An admirable chef d’cEUvre St. Paul caught up into the Third Heaven. The strong contrast of light and shade, in which this admirable pourtrayer of Nature de- lighted, has been happily employed on the present occasion, and every part is so clearly made out, that the freedom, and even elegance, in the forms of the Trees and Foliage, are strikingly evident. From the celebrated cabinet of Mr. VAN SMIDT, of Brussels. HOBBIMA... 56 THE COMPANION LANDSCAPE. A Forest Scene, with a Road passing through a Village, of which the Church ap- pears in the distance. A Girl on the left is drawing Water from a Well, and in front are Children playing with a Dog and a Goat This Picture is admirable, both for subject and quality, and' exquisitely finished RUBENS 60 THE GRAND LANDSCAPE with a RAINBOW. A very celebrated chef d’teuvre ; one of a pair, whieh were formerly distinguished ornaments of the BALBI PALACE, at GENOA. The subject represents a Party of Peasants returning home, at Evening, from Harvest- work, soon after a shower, and various others engaged in farming employments. A Group of Cattle watering, and a Brood of Ducks hur- rying to a Pool, are not only most boldly designed, but display all the magic of Rubens’s pencil. A mass of Wood on the right, forms a perspective, which is lost in a de- lightful distant Landscape. A Rainbow, with a grand sweep, unites the colouring of the whole in the richest harmony. It may be safely pronounced to be one of the most glo- rious efforts of Rubens. PARMEGIANO ... 61 THE VISION OF ST. JEROME.
