The buildings in a sea-port town, and numerous vessels diminishing in faint perspective, terminate the distance A skirmish of cavalry in a hollow pass, between a wood and a range of mountains ; spirited and well coloured The river Arno, with a w^aterman in a wherry carrying a pas- senger across ; beyond them is a barge entering the mouth of a smaller navigable river. The view is terminated by a range of hills seen through the effect of vapour and a sultry sun. The original design for the favourite picture of the snake in the grass A view of the Thames, at Teddington, looking down towards Pope’s Villa, at Twickenham. Fishermen in a punt are gliding down by a tongue of land, on which some sheep are reposing, and shepherds are conversing in the shade. The group is beautifully coloured and finished A female fortune-teller predicting the fortunes of a cottage girl, who is resting upon her spinning wheel, and listening to her in thoughtful attention A landscape view on a coast where fish, recently caught, have been landed, and donkies are waiting to be loaded with them. A man, mounted on a white horse, followed by a 6 nt peasant with a landing-net and his spaniel, is jogging over a rising ground above. A train of nymphs, swimming after her, support her feet, and add to the security of her seat upon the back of the animal ; Tritons precede them sounding their conchs, and several young zephyrs are clustered round the \eagle of Jupiter, which hovers over the group, and by over- shadowing them with its wings, contributes to the effect of the chiaro scuro. A splendid composition, full of movement, and singularly rich in colour Gainsborough 52 A female cottager with children, at a cottage door, em- bowered with trees, which, open to a pleasing landscape distance A well-known and very favourite chef d’oeuvre of this delightful painter, of rustic nature A sleeping nymph “ As on her arm reclines the sleeping fair, ^ And with her breath the loitering gale perfumes. Love sees, or thinks he sees, his mother there. And nearer earth directs his glittering plumes ; Hovers with fond delight around her bower.
