The picture was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition in 1855, and was bequeathed to the . . Nation by Jacob Bell, Esq., in 1S59. The subject originally intended was a mare and foal, with which object the mare was turned out for breeding. In due time the : n! arrived, and trequent bulletins were forwarded to St. John's Wood reporting progress, and anxiously requesting an appointment for a sitting. The foal passed through the age of infancy and out-grew its mother. A second foal arrived with the same result, and was sold at about four years old : the idea of the mare and foal picture being then abandoned as hopeless. About a ye was admiring the condition of the mare, and said. “ I am determined to paint Old Betty after ah. This being settled and an appointment made, the canvas was found ready, the shoeing subject decided on, and the picture completed for the Royal Academy of the following year. Engraved by Thomas Landseer The owner’s dog was for a long time a candidate for a picture by Sir E. Landeer, and died before it was painted. About two years afterwards he received a note naming a day for sitting. He had fortunately taken care to be provided with another dog in case the chance should occur, and he punctually kept the appointment. On mentioning the fact that the old favourite was dead, and giving a description of his colour and general appearance, Sir Edwin said, “ Oh, yes, I know the dog exactly,” and made an outline with a few touches that proved the fact. The picture was painted in two days, and the portraits are exact, especially the light-coloured dog, which was painted entirely from description. All who knew the original have remarked on seeing the picture, that not only in colour and attitude, but in the expression of his eye it is the dog himself.
