NEW YORK: PUBLISHED BY MARK H. NEWMAN & CO. No. 199 BROADWAY. 1850. PREFACE, It is hoped that this addition of standard tunes will render more extensively useful the excellent collection of Hymns to which it is appended. Music will here be found adapted to every va- riety of religious emotion contained in the Hymns. Some tunes are capable, when properly sung, of but one kind of expression : for instance. u TVard- law," joyous, exulting ; u India," gentle, soothing. Others admit of a variety of expression: of this class are u Ortonville" and "Balerma." We have endeavored to give the leading character of the tune in the character of the words attached. The value and importance of singing in social worship no one will deny ; that it does not hold so high a place in family worship is a matter of deep regret, and should awaken solicitude in every Christian family, and prompt to a reform in practice. How is it possible better to carry out the in- junction of the great Apostle, u Teaching and 4 PREFACE. admonishing one another in Psalms and Hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord," than for every family to make the singing of Psalms and Hymns a part of daily worship? A family thus trained up will never forget the salutary lessons inculcated in our sacred songs. Once a week, on the Christian Sabbath , is not enough to sing the praises of God ; it should be the daily practice of every family, and every Christian. We hope this volume may assist in helping on so desirable an object. APPENDIX TO SOCIAL PSALMIST. Hymn 528. ANTIGUA. I. M. 1.
