THE BIXBY GOSPELS In the library of Mr. William Keeney Bixby of St. Louis, Missouri, is a Greek manuscript of the Gospels which presents some interesting features. It was seen by Professor Caspar René Gregory on his visit to St. Louis in 1912, and he at once recognized in it a manuscript that he had seen on July 31, 1883, in the hands of Quaritch in London, and had included as No. 703 in his catalogue of Greek Gospel cursives, but had later lost sight of. Professor Gregory had informed me that he understood there was a Greek manuscript of the Gospels at St. Louis, and on seeing it he at once wrote me of its identification, at the same time suggesting to Mr. Bixby that it be sent to Chicago for more detailed examination. Mr. Bixby kindly consented and a few months later put the manuscript in the hands of Professor Shorey, who was lecturing in St. Louis, and who most obligingly brought it to Chicago. My sincere thanks are due Professor Gregory, Mr. Bixby, and Professor Shorey for thus helping me to an acquaintance with the manuscript. The history of the manuscript presents an interesting feature by reason of a note scrawled perhaps a century ago at the foot of f. 240 of the prefatory part. It reads: -τετραευάγγελον μονῆς τοῦ παντο- Kpa|Topos Kal σωτῆρος χριστοῦ τὸν εν τῶ ἄθω: “Gospels of the Convent of the Omnipotent (Pantocrator) and Savior Christ in Athos.” - This means that early in the last century the manuscript belonged to the 1 Gregory described the manuscript (Textkritik des N.T., 1900, p. 214) as follows: 703: Friiher London, Quaritch. 1251, 21.6X17, Perg, 2 Bde, ? When Curzon visited Athos in 1837, however, he found the library in ruins. “. . . . It had been destroyed during the revolution.’”* The tower which had contained it was ruinous, and the books scattered and rain-soaked. ‘Neglect and damp and exposure had destroyed them completely” (p. 343). Yet modern scholars report the library of Pantocrator as still existent. Lambros includes its manuscripts in his catalogue, Professor Gregory reports seeing more than a score of New Testament manuscripts there in March, 1902, and Professor Lake informs me that he has studied manuscripts in that library. Mr. Sprengling too saw manuscripts there, but was not shown the library. It was probably less seriously affected by the disturbances of 1821-27 than Curzon supposed. It may be remarked that the leaves of Vol. I of the Bixby Gospels are very badly water-stained at beginning and end, and unmistakable traces of smoke appear on several leaves of Matthew. If, as now seems probable, many of the Pantocrator books escaped serious injury in the Revolution, the Bixby Gospels may have been somewhere about the convent at the time of Curzon’s visit, or it may have been carried away from Athos in the course of those disturbances. We can be sure only that not long before the Revolution it was in the library of Pantocrator. By 1868 it had passed into the hands of Bernard Quaritch of London, for it is No. τ in Quaritch’s Catalogue of Books of that date.? Quaritch began to deal in rare books about 1858, so that the manuscript can hardly τ Curzon, A Visit to Monasteries in the Levant, p. 341. 2 As the first printed notice of the Bixby manuscript, Quaritch’s description may, despite its defects, be reproduced here in part: “Evangelia Quatuor, Graece, quibus praepositi sunt Canones Eusebii, 410 leaves, in 2 vols. sm. 4to. including to blank ones, fine Byzantine Manuscript on Vellum written in the latter half of the Ninth Century, with 4 large paintings of the Evangel- ists, the capitals and headings in gold, beautifully bound in brown morocco extra, blind tooling, enclosed in a red velvet case, with compartments and spring, £250. circa A.D. 860. [Later catalogues put the date at 1000.] “Artistic illustrations.—St. Matthew seated before a lectern and a desk, on which are placed writing materials; the head surrounded by a nimbus and looking to the right, three quarters of the face shewn; hair and beard grey. St. Mark, a book in his hand, a nimbus round his head, seated before a desk; looking to the right, with brown hair and beard. St. Luke, also sitting in a similar position, with brown hair, and small beard. St. John, round-headed with grey hair and beard, looking to the left, also seated before a lectern, and more Asiatic in appearance than the other three. . . . . One example alone will evince the critical care bestowed on the work; in the 124 συν es THE BIXBY GOSPELS 7 have come into his possession before that time. In 1883 Professor Gregory saw it in Quaritch’s stock in London. It appears as No. 6 in Quaritch’s great Catalogue of 1887. A description of it, evidently clipped from a later catalogue, is now pasted inside the front cover of Vol. I. Mr. Bixby purchased the manuscript May 2, 1902, through a representative, from a sale at Sotheby’s, to which Quaritch had sent it. A second feature of interest is the presence in the manuscript of three leaves of chronological material, mostly from the Chronicle of Hippolytus of Thebes, ca. A.D. 700, in which the main periods of Old Testament and Christian history are reckoned in years. The five periods before Christ aggregate 5,500 years, and the time from the birth of Christ to the writing of the manuscript is reckoned at 1,259. There is no reason to suppose this to be the date of the Gospels manuscript, as some have thought. The chronological section is in a different hand, and the leaves on which it is written are unlike those about them. The worm holes in them do not extend to the adjacent leaves. Moreover the hand of the Gospels manuscript, as Professor Lake remarked, on seeing the manuscript on January 1, 1914, strongly suggests an earlier date than the thirteenth century. The chronological leaves are evidently from another manuscript and found their way into their present place, perhaps because they had become detached from the manuscript to which they belonged, and to unite them with another substantial manu- script seemed the best way of preserving them. That they were written for the purpose of insertion in this manuscript is improbable. They , present some distinctive features both in contents and decoration, and give the manuscript an interest for the student of Christian literature and of Byzantine illumination. A third feature of some interest is the use of musical notes to guide the reader of the church lections. These are in red, and are of course confined to the parts of the text designated for lectionary use. They may be seen in the facsimile of the first page of Matthew. A fourth feature of interest is the presence of miniature paintings of the four evangelists. These are well described in Quaritch’s Catalogue first chapter of John, verse 28, the word Bn#a8apa . . . . was evidently erased by the writer, who has substituted ByOavia..... The latter reading is probably to be found in no other manuscript of the period.” Some variants mostly correct follow, with an extravagant estimate of the textual worth of the manuscript. 125 ὃ HISTORICAL AND LINGUISTIC STUDIES (note 2, p. 6 above). They are of the usual Byzantine type described in Herbert’s [lluminated Manuscripts, p. 64: “5. Matthew is always an old man, with white hair and beard. S. Mark is much younger, dark haired... .. S. Luke is a young man in his prime, fair, with good features of Greek type and slight pointed beard... . . S. John . is generally depicted as an old man, with long white beard and bald head.” This description applies wonderfully well to the Bixby miniatures. The way in which the Pericope, John 7:53—8:11, was introduced into the text, from which it was originally wanting, is a further point of interest. A century or two after the manuscript was written two leaves, 3 and 6, were removed from the 41st quire, and three leaves, 3, 6, and 7, were inserted in their places to make possible the introduction of the Pericope. The hand of these new leaves, while not at all the same as that of the chronological section, can be shown on paleographical grounds to belong to their period, and this suggests that these two alterations in the manuscript belong to the same time—the end of the thirteenth century. But the chronological leaves seem from their condition to have been old when they were inserted in the present manuscript, and probably found their way into it at a later date. The manuscript is now in two volumes richly bound, and lettered, Vol. I, τα | τεσσαρα | evayyedta || Τομος A || Ματθαιος | και | Mapxos Vol. 11, ra | τεσσαρα | ευαγγελια || Τομος B || Λουκας | και | Ιωαννης. They are inclosed in a red velvet case lettered in gilt: Evangeliarium | graece | MS. Sec. IX. Case and binding seem to be at least as old as 1868, since both are described in Quaritch’s Catalogue of that date. The first volume contains ff. 24 of prefatory matter beginning with a picture of Matthew, and followed by ff. 172 arranged in 22 quires of 8 leaves each except 1 (9), 7(7), 12(7), and 22(5). The second volume contains ff. 206, quires 23-48, each of 8 leaves, except 23 (7), 41 (now 9 but originally 8, 2 original leaves having been replaced by 3 later ones, in order to introduce the Pericope into the text), and 48(6). The total number of leaves is 405, not including fly-leaves. The quires are num- bered at the lower left-hand corner of the first recto. The leaves usually measure cm. 21.5X16.5. ‘The text is in single columns, usually of 18 lines. ‘The single-column arrangement has been thought by Schmidtke* 1 Texte u. Untersuchungen, XX XVII, 1, p. 13. 126 THE BIXBY GOSPELS 9 to point to an origin in the eastern provinces. The paintings of the evangelists are full-page pictures done in much detail; only that of John is slightly smaller. The paragraph divisions, frequent except in John, are marked by neat marginal capitals in gold or red. Vol. I contains, after a parchment fly-leaf: 1. A full-page painting of the evangelist Matthew, seated, writing, f. 1b (Plate 1). 2. A chronological outline from creation to the time of writing, 1259 A.D., ff. 2a-4a. These three leaves are evidently extraneous, as the hand is not that of the other parts of the manuscript, and the date given is too late for them. The worm holes which pierce these three leaves do not extend to the adjacent ones. The elaborate Byzantine ornament in red which stands at the head of each of these six pages is quite unlike anything in the other parts of the manuscript. It occu- pies the upper third of each page, ff. 2a-4b, leaving the column of writing (20-21 lines) square (ca. cm. 10X10) (Plate 1). 3. The Menology, September 1-December 11 (2 ff. apparently cut out), January 23-August 31, ff. sa—-11a, ending with ἐυαγγέλια εἰς μνήμας ἁγίας καὶ ἑτέρας λιτουργίας, ff. gb-11a. Ff. 3 and 6 of quire 41 have been cut out and replaced by ff. 3 (7: 18-28), 6 and 7 (7:48—8: 18a) in a later (thirteenth- century Ὁ) hand, in order to insert the Pericope, which was originally wanting in the text. At least a dozen correctors have retouched the text at different periods, but the introduction of the Pericope is the only extended altera- tion it has sustained. Ina few cases an omitted verse has been supplied. The last lines on f. 18a have been retraced by a later hand. Quite as many hands have altered or supplemented the lectionary notes. The text of the manuscript does not of course justify the extravagant estimate put upon it by Quaritch in 1868. The text in general is very close to that of Stephanus. In one chapter it coincides with it entirely. In some particulars it is nearer to von Soden’s K-type or some form of it, than is Stephanus, but now and then a more primitive reading appears. To Luke 8:15 a corrector has added πολλή, as in 13, 69, 346, manuscripts of the Ferrar group. The form in which the Pericope appears has no bearing on the quality of the rest of the manuscript, since it has been written in from another text. It exhibits a curious 128 THE BIXBY GOSPELS 11 blending of von Soden’s types, agreeing in g particulars with μδῆ, in 17 with y?, in 17 with μῖ, in 18 with μὐ, in 21 with yw‘, and in 30 with μ΄. The date of the manuscript can hardly be that given in the intrusive chronological section, A.D. 1259. That is probably the date of the three leaves of chronological material, which doubtless belonged to some other manuscript (witness the worm holes in them which do not extend to the adjacent leaves) and were rescued from its remains and preserved by inclusion in some former rebinding of these Gospels. But the hand of the Gospels text so resembles that of eleventh-century cursives that an origin in that century is highly probable. Both hand and ornamental headings closely resemble a Paris manuscript of Gregory of Nazianzos dated A.D. 1007." On the other hand, the three leaves inserted in quire 41 to introduce the Pericope into the manuscript are in a hand much like that of a Paris manuscript dated A.D. 1282,? and were probably added to the manuscript in the thirteenth century. While the writer of the chronological statement is evidently much confused in his earlier figures and summaries, it is more reasonable to suppose that he knows in what year of our era he is writing than to try to correct his anno Domini date by his date reckoned from the creation. The latter is indeed nowhere twice alike in his estimates, although 5,500 years is probably meant. This chronological section, though not properly a part of the manu- script, but an accretion, is its most interesting feature. It is not a fragment, but stands complete. Its leaves are disarranged, 1 and 2 having been transposed in binding. The text is decidedly corrupt in some particulars, especially the numbers. In the following transcript of it the ordinary abbreviations ‘w xv’ θκς kv’, etc., have been expanded. It belongs for the most part to the work of Hippolytus of Thebes (ca. 700), though no one of the forms of his work published by Diekamp precisely corresponds to this. The suspected paragraph which Diekamp desig- nates VIIIa (pp. 34, 35), contains the substance of the opening lines, both items and figures agreeing pretty closely; Adam to Noah, 2,242 years in both; to Abraham, 1,170 in both; to Moses, Hippolytus 444, Bixby 442; to David, 599 in both; to Christ, 1,045 in both. The totals «Cf. Omont, Fac-similés des manuscrils grecs datés de la Bibliotéque Nationale du TX¢ au XIV siécle (1897, Pl. XII). 2 Omont, op. cit., Pl. LXIII. 129 12 HISTORICAL AND LINGUISTIC STUDIES differ widely: Hippolytus 5,500, Bixby 5,077, but the latter should on the figures just quoted give 5,498, and on f. 4a the total for this period is actually given at 5,500. The disagreement is therefore an accident of textual corruption. The material that follows in the Bixby Gospels as far as f. 26 med. is that of Hippolytus’ Chronicle, Form I, chaps. 1-5, with some omissions (2:1, 2, 6b; 5:1, 3a). The last page and a half of the Bixby material with the numbers of years from the Resurrection to the Finding of the Cross, and from one Council to another, has no parallel in the Hippolytus remains, genuine, suspected, or spurious, which Diekamp has collected. It is hardly worth while to trace the sources farther. The story of the Finding of the Cross is at least as old as Cyril of Jerusalem (ca. 350), and this and the earlier part of the remainder may possibly belong to Hippolytus, along with what precedes, but the seventh Council (Nicaea II, A.D. 787) is later than his time, which falls between A.D. 650 and 750. It is the combination of these conciliar epochs with Hippolytus’ materials which makes this chronological composition, as far as I can learn, unique. Of the manuscripts quoted by Diekamp, a‘ (Vatic. Ottob. 441, A.D. 1477) most closely resembles our manuscript in text. Like ours it includes the Adam-to-Christ epochs, not usually combined with Hippolytus, but it breaks off at 3:44. In the following transcript Diekamp’s chapter and verse numbers are inserted. In the notes, the readings of Diekamp’s text or of his manuscripts have been quoted where they help to clear up difficulties in the Bixby text. And from Abraham until Moses 442 years. And from Moses until David 599 years. And from David until the Christ 1,045 years. Altogether 5,077 years. (I1) And from the birth of Christ until the Adoration of the Magi in the house at Nazareth 2 years. (2) And from the flight into Egypt until the death of Herod, son of Antipater, 3 years. For both Joseph and Mary with Jesus sojourned in Heliopolis which is near Memphis 3 years. (3) After their return to their dwelling in Galilee until the death of Archelaus 19 years. With Archelaus died also Augustus, for he lived 88 years. And he reigned 58 years. (4) And from the death of Archelaus until (F. 36) the baptism of our Savior by John in Jordan 3 years. Altogether 30 years. (II 3) And from the death of John the Baptist until the saving Passion 6 months. (4) For John the Baptist lived 33 years, 30 withdrawn in the wilderness and the other 3 baptizing in the Jordan. (5) Thus our Lord also passed 30 years in his youthful times, and after the baptism until his saving Passion 3 years. (6) Wherefore in Nicaea also the 318 holy fathers gave injunction to ordain no one a presbyter under 30 years of age. (III 1) And from the Ascension until the stoning of Stephen the first martyr 7 years. (2) And from the martyrdom of Stephen until the appearing of the light to Paul 6 months. (3) And from the baptism of Paul until the falling asleep of the very holy Mother of God (F. 2a) 3 years. Altogether 44 years. (4) The Mother of God lived upon the earth 59 years; in the Temple 14 years, in the house of Joseph 4 months, and so was given the good tidings by Gabriel. And she conceived and brought forth our Lord Jesus Christ in the month of December, the 25th. Altogether 15 years. And upon the incarna- tion of the Lord she lived with the disciples in the house of John the Evangelist 11 years. Altogether 59 years. (IV 1) - And this is the John whom Jesus loved, who is also the Virgin, who remained in Jerusalem on the so-called holy Zion the mother of the holy churches. And this was the house (2) to which the apostles fled because of fear of the Jews. (3) There the Lord appeared to the disciples when the doors were shut, and he gave them the Holy Spirit. (4) There he convinced St. Thomas, shewing the prints of the nails. (5) There preparation was made to eat the Passover with the disciples. (6) Having sung a hymn there they went forth to the Mount of Olives to the place Gethsemane. (7) There (F. 2b) the apostles held the first mystery. (8) There the apostles ordained St. James the brother of God. (V 2) And Zebedee the father of John is said (to have been) a shipowner, and of the notable men in Galilee he was first. (3) For John after the death of his father Zebedee sold his property in Galilee which (he had inherited and) they bought one in Jerusalem. (4) There they received the very holy Mother of God. (5) And after her departure he fell asleep in Ephesus of Asia. (End of the Hippolytus excerpt.) 134 — νὴ. THE BIXBY GOSPELS 17 From the saving Passion and Resurrection and Ascension of our Savior until the finding of the precious cross in the time of Constantine the king and Helena his mother and Alexander the patriarch and Sylvester the pope of Rome, in the first council, 200 years. And from the first Council until the second in the time of Theodosius the king and Gregory (F. 4a) the Theologian 7 years. And from the second Council until the third in the time of Theodosius the Great and Cyril of Alexandria 29 years. And from the third Council until the fourth in the time of Marcianus the king and Flavianus the patriarch 42 years. And from the fourth Council until the fifth in the time of Justinian the king and Eutychius the patriarch 68 years. And from the fifth Council until the sixth in the time of Constantas the king [meaning Constantine IV | and Germanus the patriarch 163 years. And from the sixth Council until the seventh in the time of Constantas [meaning Constantine VI] and Irene his mother and Tarasius patriarch of Constantinople 5 years. And from the sev- enth Council until now . Altogether from the creation of the world until Christ 5,500 years and from Christ until now 1,259 years. Altogether, all the years from the creation of the world, including the incarnation of the Lord, until now 6,759; and the fourteenth( ?) year of the Indiction. While the Era of Constantinople placed the birth of Christ in the year 5509 of the world, and this era is that generally followed by the Greek church,’ the Era of Alexandria reckoned the years before Christ at 5,500, following in this the computation of Julius Africanus. The conciliar dates of the manuscript are in utter confusion, but the mon- archs and theologians mentioned in connection with them show that the seven great Councils from Nicaea I to Nicaea II are intended. The following collation is based on the Lloyd-Sanday reprint of | Stephanus’ editio regia of 1550. In it no account has been taken of insignificant itacisms, variations of accent or breathing, or the omission of v-movable or the -s of οὕτως. In other respects I have tried to make the collation exact and complete. ἐυαγγέλιον κατὰ ματθαιον Matt. 1:1 6a6 for Δαβὶδ here and usually 6 σολομῶνα for Σολομῶντα 2:1 ἱερουσαλημ for ἹἹεροσόλυμα 7 tr. to καλέσας λάθρα τι εἶδον for εὗρον τ The confusion of this and the later figures will be seen from a comparison with the accepted dates of these councils: (1) Nicaea I, 325, (2) Constantinople I, 381, (3) Ephesus, 431, (4) Chalcedon, 451, (5) Constantinople II, 553, (6) Constantinople III, 680, (7) Nicaea II, 787. ?
