H. Tewksbury PUBLISHERS' NOTE Among Congregational churches there has been an increas- ing demand for a simple liturgical service book. Ai the request of the publishers the effort to meet that demand was undertaken by Reuen Thomas, D.D., whose own services have been greatly enriched by a little volume of similar character, partly of his own compilation. His experience, good judgment and fine perception indicated him as eminently well qualified to dis- charge the task to the satisfaction of the churches. While free prayer must ever be regarded as indispensable to the completeness of the worship of assemblies of Christian people, especially as adapting that worship to local and national conditions as they arise, yet liturgical forms of prayer, moving in the region of common human necessities, are tmdoubtedly not only justifiable but helpful. A single stereotyped service, repeated over and over again, can scarcely escape the charge of con- tributing to formality. Yet the mind seems to demand a certain degree of familiarity such as is seciired by a variety of services, controlled by the same ideas and following the same order; for there is a logical order for public worship. This seems to be that which is observed in this book. Five services are arranged, to include: I. Invocation (or Invitation to Worship). II. The Prayer of Confession of Minister and People, which may be offered responsively or not. III. The Declaration of Divine Mercy (by the Minister, with no trace of priestly absolution in it). IV. The Word of Adoration (from the people), to be said or simg. V. Prayers. INTRODUCTORY VI. Thanksgivings. VII. Additional Prayers are furnished, whichi may be added to those under V, one or more. Also, a Modification of the Ancient Litany, a service in itself; and a Service, in almost the very words of Scripture, from that most excel- lent guide in devotional feeling. Bishop Lancelot Andrews. A Baptismal and a Communion Serv- ice, both brief, and Offertory Sentences from Scripture, are furnished. Practically we have Seven Services, enough to prevent formality and enough to secure that agreeable familiarity which the human mind seems to prefer. The ancient Liturgies and Prayers have been copiously used, as best illustrating the true liturgical instinct. In his most valuable book on "Christian Institutions," Prof. A. V. G. Allen writes: ''The spiritual imagination which pro- duced the ancient liturgies lost its creative power after the fifteenth century, since when there has been no further liturgical development." Yet the liturgical instinct has often reappeared in modem men, and from the most devotional spirits of recent times, whose work has been pre- served, prayers have been selected which seem to contain something of the old simplicity and fragrance. It need hardly be suggested to minis- ters that they make themselves thoroughly familiar with these before using them in public worship. • From these Additional Prayers most suitable selections may be made for family worship.
