Addresses were delivered by Dr. Abercrombie, Sen., the Revds. Thompson, Godman, Capt. Hedger, and Revd. Morgan. REPORT OF THE DIRECTORS >mrtti fftican JKraionimj InrMtj. By the mercy of Providence it is permitted to the Directors to render their Sixty-first Annual Report. The past year has been marked by progressive increase, not only of temporal prosperity, but also of growing interest in the Congregation and others in their eternal welfare. The public worship on the Lord’s Day, in the morning and evening, and on every Wednesday evening, besides a Prayer Meeting on the first Monday evening in each month, have been regularly conducted. On Sunday after¬ noon, and twice in the week, instruction is given to children and adults in reading—especially in the Bible— by the minister and some Christian friends, to whom the Directors desire to express their thanks for their perse¬ vering labor of love. Of the Day Schools of this Society the Directors have to report, that the Upper School, conducted by Mr. McIntyre, consists of 95 children, namely 50 boys and 45 girls. The Infant School, under the superintendence of Miss Wiid, numbers 151 children, namely 73 boys and 78 girls. The daily attendance in the Upper School is from 70 to 35, and in the Infant School from 85 to 40. The congregation consists of 222 members. Eighteen children were baptized during the past year, and nine of the members were married. The receipts of the year, ending 30th September last, 6 including the balance of last year, amount to £477 9s. 8|d. and the expenses to £433 Os. 2d., leaving a balance in hand of £44 9s. 6|d. The funds of the baptized in connection with this Society —raised for the support of aged members of the congrega. tion—amount to £159 15s. 4^d. including £125 put out at interest. The interest due and unpaid, together with the balance in hands of the Treasurer amount to £34 15s. 4^d. The funds of the Benevolent Society—the object of which is also the support of the sick and aged, and to defray medical attendance, medicine, funeral expenses, &c.— amount to £409 14s. lid. On the 4th September last, in conformity with the funda¬ mental laws of the Society, Messrs. P. Marais, G-. C. Gie, and J. A. le Sueur, were, by majority of votes, elected Directors, in lieu of the retiring Directors, the Rev. G. Morgan and Messrs. A. P. J. van der Poel and P. J. Visser, Mr. W. Joubert being re-elected. ZOAR. With regard to this Branch Institution the Directors have to report, that the Missionary stationed there, the Rev. Mr. Knobel, having given up his connection with this Society, left Zoar on the 16th April last. Not being able to obtain a proper person as Missionary for this Station, the Directors applied for assistance to the Rev. Mr. Van Velden, of Ladysmith, who kindly took upon himself the temporary charge of the congregation and school at Zoar. The Directors have also placed themselves in communi¬ cation with the Missionary Commission of the Dutch Reformed Church, and a deputation of the Directors went 7 to Stellenbosch, to consult with two of the members of the said Commission, resident there, in order to ascertain whether the Commission would be inclined to take over the Institution of Zoar upon the same condition as where¬ upon it is held by this Society, and if not, in what other manner this transfer could be effected. The said members declared their individual opinion in favor of this proposal ; but—what the Directors were most anxious for, namely at once to obtain a fit and proper person as Missionary at Zoar—those gentlemen confessed their inability to do any thing in this respect for the next six months ; but they stated, that if it continues the wish of the Directors to transfer this Missionary Station to them, they would place themselves in communication with the Directors the moment they found the man qualified for the work at Zoar. The Directors have still to contend with a great diffi¬ culty, namely the want of the title of the land at Zoar, by which the inhabitants there are kept back from contributing to the support of the Institution so much as they would otherwise be inclined to do. The Directors have repeatedly urged their claim in this respect to the Government, and a deputation from their midst waited on the Governor on the 28th September last, to enter fully on this subject, the result of which was, that His Excellency gave directions to inquire into the matter immediately, observing that it was perhaps only an unnecessary delay, which had prevented the issue of the title. The deputation gave His Excellency the required information with refer¬ ence to the correspondence which has taken place in this matter. The Directors therefore trust that this long protracted case will now be brought to a speedy and favor¬ able termination. In the meantime the work at Zoar is carried on under the temporary superintendence of the Rev. Mr. Van Velden, who occasionally preaches there and visits the school, which he has placed under a temporary teacher, so that there is no fear of its going backwards. 8 Mr. Van Yelden reports, that the daily attendance at the school is 105, and that the progress, as well as the regularity and cleanliness, is very satisfactory. The income at Zoar during the past year has been insufficient to meet the expenses. The collections in Cape Town, including the Government allowance of <£30, to 30th June last, amounts to £77 11s. 7d The expenses deducted therefrom leave a balance in hand of £18 Is. 3d.
