UiSjfE DtR AL WDR' //^5®8tern room ViVV—?/;o*v U 1941 /I pv THE W-P-A AMERICANIZATION AND CITIZENSHIP PROGRAM THE FOREIGN-BORN who wish to leam our language, our laws, our liberties— who wish to know the principles of our Constitution and our Government so as to become NATURALIZED CITIZENS of the United States and good citizens of their own communities— are given the opportunity to learn all these things in the AMERICANIZATION AND CITIZENSHIP CLASSES of the WORK PROJECTS ADMINISTRATION. These WPA classes are held in almost every community in the nation. The largest enrollments are in New Tork, Pennsylvania, Illinois, California, Michigan, Texas, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Ohio. In WPA citizenship classes the foreign-born are taught how to read, write and speak the Ehglish language. They are taught their rights under the Constitution and their duties as citizens. They are taught the important facts of our history, and they learn how our Federal Government operates and how the State and local governments operate. They leam the way our laws are made and enforced, and they learn about the Supreme Court. These are subjects that must be studied by those who wish to become citizens. The foreign-born learn other things, too, in these WPA classes. They leam our American customs and our American ideals. Ihey leam to outgrow old nationalistic loyalties and prejudices. They leam Americanism in daily practice— in work, discussion and recreation with their classmates. Ihey become friends with their neighbors from other lands. The students are taught in terms of adult thought, rather than with children's primers. A new set of books written especially for the foreigp-bom students has been provided by WPA writers and teachers and is used in WPA citizenship classes. So the students leam: "This is a Democracy" instead of "I see a cat." Ihey leam: "I am free." — "I have a job." They leam about things related to their own adult lives. Ihey enjoy themselves while they are learning to become GOOD AMERICAN CITIZENS. Nearly a quarter of a Billion of our foreign-bom people have become American citizens after studying in WPA CITIZENSHIP CLASSES. There are over 120,000 persons enrolled in these classes today. WPA citizenship classes are a part of the Adult Education Program of.the WPA. "America is and always has been a country of many strains drawn from all over the world—and we should make this diversity the basis of a culture and civilization greater than any the world has ever known." —Louis Adamic Author and naturalized American Whether you are foreign-born or native-born you are welcome in the Americanization and citizenship classes of the WPA. -Find out if there is a class in your neighborhood.
