These suggestions are not binding upon the users. However, they do follow sound educational principles and have been effectively used in literacy work in the District of Columbia. Construction All of the readers are constructed in accordance with the basic principles of WPA Education Circular No. 10. These readers are prepared primarily for the teaching of silent reading. Each of the first level readers is divided into eighteen units (a unit is a section of the reader which might make up one or more lessons). A maximum of six words is introduced in each unit of the first level readers except the sixth, the twelfth and the eighteenth units. These units are for review pur¬ poses and each one contains all of the words intro¬ duced in the preceding units. The introduction of new words per unit ranges from 3 to 6 in number. 1/ A maximum of eight new words on a third level of reading difficulty is introduced in each unit of the third level readers. The range is from 6 to 8 words per unit. The third level readers follow the same general construction as the first level readers, ex¬ cept for the fact that the review units are the fifth, tenth and fifteenth. Usage In our use of these materials, five reading ap¬ proaches are used in presenting the various units of 1/ " Good Health " and " Stephen Foster Songs " are exceptions. each reader. 1/ They are (i) word-picture {<.) experi¬ ence (3) discussion (4) story (5) composite. Each approach is decided upon on the basis of unit content, the type of reading disabilities encountered, and the availability of supplies and equipment. The word-picture and the experience approaches proved to be the most usable. However, we discovered that no matter which approach is used, some type of discussion becomes a part of it. It is oub further experience that the new words in each reader should be mastered before the student is allowed to read the unit from the book. Materials and Activiti.es Flash cards, mounted picture cards, phrase cards, and word building exorcises may be used to teach mas¬ tery of the new words in each unit. Elliptical sen¬ tence exercises, truu-false work-sheets, and chart or blackboard reading may be used to test for comprehen¬ sion. Pictures Used Pictures used in most of our presentations were cut from magazines, newspapers, pamphlets and other periodicals. They were mounted upon oak tag (tag board) 8-| x 11 inches, with enough margin left at the bottom for the necessary lettering. We pay farmers to grow foods, we pay wholesale stores to buy foods and we also pay stores to sell foods. Many things make up the prices that we pay. People try to get good things for the prices that they pay. They try to get pure foods and well-made clothes. Not all clothes are well-made. Do you try to get a good price on things when you buy? Many people try to get good prices on all the things that they buy. SALES Stores have many ways to sell things. Many stores have sales. People buy at'sales to save. Do you buy at sales? People try to get good prices at sales. They try to save on food and clothes and other things. They try to buy at good stores. We do not save at all sales. Many sales are not good. 25 SALES We try to buy many things at good sales. We save on many things we buy. We try to buy all the things we need. Do you try to buy all the things you need at good sales? People try to buy good things. We try to buy things from good stores and save. WE BUY ON TIME Many people do not pay for things when they buy them. When people do not pay for things when they buy them, they buy "on time". Many stores sell things on time. They sell food and clothes and other things on time. "Do you buy clothes on time?" "No. I pay for things when I buy them. They pay big prices for many other ways to advertise. We buy things from stores. We buy many things they advertise. They advertise many things we do not need. "Do you try to save money to buy a home?" "Yes. I try to save on all things. I try to save on food and clothes and many other things. 33 PEOPLE WANT HOMES Many people are farm workers. Many farm workers want to own homes. They try to get good homes on good farms. "Do many people own farm homes?" "Yes. We have many farm workers and many good farm homes." "Do all farm workers have good homes?" "No. Many farmers and many factory workers do not have good homes." Not all people have good homes. People need many more good homes. We need more good homes at prices that farm workers and factory workers can pay. 34 PEOPLE PAY FOR THINGS THEY BUY All people need food and clothes. We grow foods on farms. Not all people grow foods. Many people buy the food and clothes they need. We buy fruits and other foods from stores. Many retail stores buy the things they sell from wholesale stores. Many wholesale stores buy foods from farmers. 35 PEOPLE PAY FOR THINGS THEY BUY We buy many foods that are factory-made. Factory workers make some foods from milk and some from vegetables. They make clothes and other things people need. People make butter from milk. We get butter from the stores. When we buy butter at the stores we have to pay for many things. We pay the farmer for the milk, we pay the people to make the butter, we pay the wholesale stores to buy the butter and we pay the stores to sell the butter. Many things make up the prices we pay for food. 36 PEOPLE PAY FOR THINGS THEY BUY All people want to get pure foods and good clothes when they buy them. We need many good food laws to have pure foods. We also need good laws for clothes and other things people make. Do you get well-made clothes for the prices you pay? Many people buy things at sales. Stores advertise the sales they have. People buy at sales to save money. Do you try to save money at the sales that good stores advertise? Stores have many ways to advertise.
