- - ' . 1 WEST AMERICAN PLANTS DISTRIBUTED BY C. F. BAKER FALL OF I U . S. NATIONAL MUSEUM LIBRARY OF EDWARD LEE GREENE DEPOSITED IN 1904 ACCESSION NO. WEST AMERICAN PLANTS Distributed by C. F. Baker FALL O F 1902 Th e f o l lowi n g report of progress is sent o u t with the fall issuance of West Coast plants and the first seasonal issuance of Nevada plan ts. The work under the new plan has now been in active operation for nine months. During that time two th ousand numbers, represent ed hy about forty-six thousand spec io1 ens, have been b r ought together fresh from the field. The larger part of these were gathered by my own hand. The bulk of the material has been determined, and has been distributed already, or is being sent out now. Those already dis - tributed from the West Coast gatherings are indicated in the list by a star. Printed labels, usually with full field-notes, are sent out witb tho We st Coast series. The notes on the Ne - vada plants will appear in published reports. From time to time there will be sent out free to regular subscribers material s u pple- mentary to all cases of numbers needing addi - tional materia l. Several hundred numbers yet remain unde - termined i n the West Coast, and the same in the Nevada se ri es, and these include some of our most inter esting things. They will be i ss u ed with the corresponding sets of next yea r. I suppose the collector i s entire l y competent to attach names to these by the "appro xim a - tion-probability" method, from the manu - als after the usual manner, in order to rush the material out. This would, however , defeat th e whole purpose of these issuances, which it is hoped will have little in common with the usual issuance of this character. This work is in continuation of eleven years of unr emitting labor on the flora of Western America, having in view more especially addi - tions to our knowledge of known species rather than the description of new ones. It is in no sense to be classed among the various local and sporadic distributions of plants so common in this country. The present plans were ma - tured in the confident belief that the time was ri pe (or a comprehensive treatment of t h e flora of th e Pacific Slope, in which each g r oup for the whol e r egion might receiv e the attention of an authoritative working specialist, and th i s conclusion seems e ntir ely justified by the sup - port the work is r ece iving. The past nine months has been more especially a period of organization, and cannot be considered any just ' index to the more perfect condition into which the work is rapidly coming. Its contin - uity and regularity will be equal to that of the F . (Fung. Columb.), Lich. Bor. Am., Fl. Suec . Exsicc., or any other standard regional o r group issuance. The subdivision into special groups for study will be continued as rapidly as practicable. Above twenty-five specialists have already sig - nified a desire to cooperate . Most of the r esi - dent working bota ni sts along the Coast have recognized the absolute indis pensability of the results to all interested in this flora, with the consequence that nine are already engaged in active collecting for the distribution, and others will soo n bo doing so. Every r egion between Alaska and Lower California will be repre - sented, and by r es ident botanists whose contri - butions will be of special value because of their lo n g and intimat e acqua in tance with the plants of the ir own regions. At this time we may pr om i se spec ial contributions i n Trifo lium , Lupinus, Lotu s , Ribes, Nemophila, Castilleia, Gilia, Linanthus, Arctostaphylos, Care x , Salix, the fleshy fungi, mosses, and other groups of special int erest. The entire edition of sp ring se ts in the West Coast series was rapidly exhausted. Dupli - cates of some o( the numbers of that issuance still remain o n hand, and these we should be glad to furnish to any desiring them. Correspondence r elative to the distribution, or to the plants themselves, is solicited, and will r eceive cheerful attention. A.F. C. F. BAKER, Stanford University P. 0., Cal. I I WEST AMERICAN PLANTS DI S TRIBUT E D BY C. F . BAKER U. S. NATIONAL MUSEUM LIBRARY OF EDWARD LEE GREENE DEPOSITED IN 1904 ACCESSION NO . .•.... . . . ......•..••...... M IE 5,& CAN PLANTS Distr i buted by C. F. Ba ker FALL OF 1 903 The operations of the past year have been somewhat interfered with by a change of base-to Southern California. Except for this the work has moved steadily along and will continue to do so now, under more favorable conditions, in some respects, than at any previous time. The sets of Wes s t Coast Plants as issued t o regu l ar subscribers are supposed to be entirely uniform. I do not issue any short lots in these sets. The numbers issued have been as follows: Fngi Lichens Bryo- phyts Sperm. and Ferns Spring '02 80 15 18 168 Fall '02 21 4 68 173 Spring '03 30 4 22 435 Fall '03 73 0 0 318 Total issued in the two years 1429. This summary refers only to the West Coast Series and does not include the Ne- v ada n or N i caraguan plants, or the supple- menta r y sets. If by accident any were o mitted from any set, comparison should be made with the starred names in the list and a memorandum of the desiderata sent to me. The Fall '03 Lichens and Bryophytes and a portion of the Fungi are reserved for issu- ance in the Spring of '04. Attention is called to the fact that the field notes printed on the labels are strictly local notes, referring merely to conditions ex i sting in the immediate locality where the s pecimens were collected. It is expected that the issuance of the su p p l ementary sets now in operation will be c ontin u ed according to the original plan, u nt il every species shall be thoroughly well r ep resented . As w i ll be noted. several nomenclatorial s chools are represented among the names in the list. No attempt has been made to secure uniformity . The names arc used as applied by the various specialists who have been working on this material. Nor does this condition worry me or impede my oper- ations. Most systematists who are really in active work will waste but little time over these discrepancies. cannot but \'icw the condition as entirely normal-a stage in a n evolution which is bound to result e ve ntually in perfect uniformity. The w o rl d does not move by "proclamation," as some of our botanist appareutly think it shou l d . The sets of this year contain many inter- esting new forms, perhaps to be called by the indefinable term "species," though who shall decide their taxonomic status until they have been si throughout ir entire ranges and grown under observation? Thirteen years of and active field work in all parts of the country have bred in me a great disrespect for the dicta of closet botanists and manual compilers, as to the exact definition and Jimitatiou of species aod varieties. Many of the "pe r - fectly good species" of the older botan i sts are absolutely confined to certain mo u nta in peaks or valleys, or other isolated loca l ities . There are still mountain peaks and valleys to be lr and there arc still many which have not been half "explored" in th e past. I make these incomplete remarks on the score of objections to some of my "new species" (which I have never yet called such) which have come to me from certain botanists. I note that these gentlemen are usually not tield workers, though, curiously enough, some are "ecologists" - evidently cases of "trained observers" who were trained "to see certain things and no more . ·' lJntil all plant forms even to obscure races in the very variable species shall h ave been recognized by name or number o r what-not, the more and more elaborate and minutely classification of ecolog - ical conditions will represent very largel y an abstract idea, wanting the logical, con- crete botanical complement of the equation impossible of perfect illumination except by reference to definite plant forms . It is too bad for some "botanists" that there is such a marvelous profusion of plant forms in the world. They should start a "Society for the Extermination of all Plants n ot Refcrrable to the 'l'ypical Formsdcscribed by the Older Botanists." At this time I cau only say that I believe the new forms re - corded herein to be just as "good" species as the majority of forms recorded for any llora. As a by-product of the work of the past year there have been incorporated in my permanent herbarium over twenty-five thousand sheets of plants, thus carrying the total to above ninety thousand specimens. Under favorable conditions much more might easily have been done. As in the past this herbarium is always at the service of botanical workers, especially those who haye uot the advantages of access to public herbaria, and those younger men not iu the universities who arc laboring under the discouraging conditions that usually su r- round the worker without a u n iversity ped i - gree. All botanists are cordia l ly invited to visit this herbarium, to examine it, and to make any possible use of it. It is in perfect order and readily accessible. C. F. Tt resulted in the collection of about twenty thousand specimens. Only a portion of these have been determined. though they are now la r ·gely in the hands of specialists. Wc .s tern Nicaragua proved not uulike some of our southwestern country in the winter time. It was dry, the under · vege- tation withered and dead, and almost eonstant winds kept everything loaded with dust. No rain fell while we were there. It was not an encouraging outlook fo r the botauist, bu t patient searching along streams and in ra v ines, especially those on the slopes of the highe r mountains, gave the results noted . The next Central American trip will he made in the season .
