It is not often an easy question to decide. Every member of the family is interested in the solution of the problem. Upon a wise decision largely depends the health and hap- piness of a household or an individual during the Summer season. The object of this book is to present some of the attractive features of Long Island, together with a carefully prepared list of hotels and boarding houses on the lines of the Long Island Railroad. Long Island is the natural and most accessible Summer retreat for persons residing in and about the city of New York. To business men who must be within easy access of their office Long Island offers advantages not possessed by any other near-bv resort. The Long Island Railroad stations in New York City (Manhattan) are at the foot of New Chambers Street, and at the foot of 34th Street, East River. An annex boat for the especial accommodation of down town business men is also operated during the Summer — June ist to October ist, morning and afternoon — from Pier 18, foot of Pine Street, East River. The stations in New York Cit\' (Manhattan) are readily accessible from the various railroad stations and steamboat piers by the elevated and surface lines. The terminus in Brooklyn is at Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues, and is reached from the Pennsylvania Railroad, Jersey City, by annex boat; also from the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the Ferries by the elevated and surface lines. There are also other stations in Brooklyn at Franklin and Atlantic Avenues (Bedford Station), at East New York and at Bushwick, which are readily reached by the many car lines. The frequency of trains and the ease with which they can be reached makes the Long Island Railroad service equal to that of any other railroad operated out of New York City. The entire road-bed has been newly ballasted with heavy cinder ballast, thus absolutely avoiding dust and its general attendant unpleasantness. In addition to this the whole length of the road will be sprinkled with oil. For the past two years "oil sprinkling" has demonstrated for itself its efficiency to allay the dust and to keep the road-bed thoroughly clean. Positive safety (as well as ease and comfort of travel) is ensured by the use of heavy steel rails; hard-coal engines are in use, and the cars are illuminated by Pintsch gas. Long Island is 122 miles in length and from 8 to 20 in width, and within this area of 1,500 square miles is almost every diversity of scenery. The climate is mild, and not liable to sudden changes or extremes of heat and cold. The temperature of Long Island is 10 degrees higher in Winter and 15 lower in Summer than in New York City. The modifying influences of the Ocean and the (Uilf Stream are considerable. Statistics show that the mortality in Suffolk County and in the rural section of Queens Coimty is lower than in any other part of the State. Long Island offers to the pleasure seeker uneipialled surf and still-water bathing, ocean or bav sailing, brook, pond or ocean fishing, better shooting than can be found at a less distance than the Adirondacks; pleasant drives, unexcelled roads for bicycling, food fresh from the water, the air or the land, and atmosphere peculiarly invigorating and never tainted. Its pleasure resorts are esjiecialiy attractive to women and children, because, being close to the city, the hotels and boarding houses are not abandoned by the men from Monday morning until Saturday night. Long Island is naturally divided into three sections, the South shore or ocean front, the North shore by the Sound, and the Central section, the eastern part of which fronts on the picturesque Peconic Bay. Each division has entireh different characteristics, and will be con- sidered separately. ON THE SHORE OF HEMPSTEAD HARBOR. T.bc JVorth Shove. ALONG THE SOUND FROM LONG ISLAND CITY TO WHITESTONE, GREAT NECK, PORT WASHINGTON, OYSTER BAY, PORT JEFFERSON, AND WADING RIVER. THE North Shore of Long Island is bold and precipitous. The Sound makes many inden- tations of deep bays or harbors, and on either side of these the land is high and wooded with the finest growth of timber. Boating and bathing can be enjoyed along the entire North Shore. Fishing is plentiful, and, added to all these pleasures, are the matchless lieauties of the scenery, unrivalled drives, cool and invigorating air, quiet villages and well-tilled farms. The accommodations offered the Summer visitor are excellent in character, moderate in price, and of sufficient variety to meet the desires of the most fastidious. There are several large hotels, popu- lar and well managed. There are manv smaller hotels and private boarding houses, some along the water front and others inland among the farms and in the woods, where first-class board can be had at modest rates. The resorts on the line of the railroad to Whitestnne, Great Neck and Port Washington are all within a half hour from New York City. The other North Shore ])oints of interest are to be found on the Oyster Bay Branch and the Port Jefferson Hranch of the Long Island Railroad. The first resorts in this division, or rather the nearest to the city, are the chain of villages centering about the (juaint old town of Flushing. Among the number are College Point, Whitestone, Broadway, Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Great Neck, Manhasset and Port Washington. They are all near to the water, com- manding a fine view of the Sound, and are especially well situated for the en- joyment of aquatic sports. In the vicinity are many handsome private villas. Equally well located with reference to harbor facili- ties, but having the added attraction of rugged hills and thickly timbered woods, are the villages of Roslyn, the home of the late William Cullen Bry- ant ; Glen Head, Sea Cliff, at one time famous for its camp meetings ; Glen Cove, Locust Valley and Oyster Bay. These places are all within easy distance of the city. They combine the attractive features of land and water, though not having, of course, the surf bathing to be found on the ocean side of the island nor the high altitudes of mountain regions. There are, however, steep hills and dense forests, with AN OLD WILL ON THE NORTH SIOE, drives as picturesque as are to be found in the Cats- kills or Adirondacks. To fully appreciate this region one must travel along the woodland roads, and from the hills and high bluffs view the numerous bays, inlets and delightful vistas of blue waters. The visit- or need have no fear that he will tire of a vacation or an entire Summer spent here. An experience of one season only whets the appetite for a return visit the ne.\t year. Some of the handsomest private resi- dences in the country are to be found along these roads, with their spacious lawns and broad fields of highly cultivated acres. Beyond Oyster ]!ay, and reached by trains on the Port Jefferson Branch, are the villages of Cold Spring Harbor, with its well-known hotels; Huntington, an interesting town that figured in Revolutionary times; Green- lawn, Northport, with its "Bay of Naples;" Kings Park, Smithtown, St. James, Stony Brook, NEAR KOSLVN. Setauket and the famous old ship-building town of Port Jefferson. East of Port Jefferson are Oldfield Point, Mount Sinai, Miller's Place, Rocky Point, Middle Island and Wading River — the terminus of the Port Jefferson Branch of the railroad — all retired country settlements, where visitors can find many charming Summer homes. The scenery is beautiful, and sport with rod and gun always at hand. In this section are grown some of the finest productions of the soil that are sent to New York, so that beside rest and contact with Nature in her richest garb, excellent table fare may be relied upon. All the praises of the North Shore are realized at these resorts. A iOPlLAR ROAD ON THH NOKTH bHORE. X^hc South Side Resorts, ON THE GREAT SOUTH BAY AND ATLANTIC OCEAN-CONEY ISLAND TO MONTAUK POINT. THOSE who desire to spend their Summer by the seaside along the coast washed by the Atlantic Ocean must go to the resorts on the south side of the island. Some of the most famous seaside watering places in the country are to be found here on Long Island. Beginning with Coney Island, the metropolis among Summer cities, and continuing to the end of the island, to Montauk Point, there are over forty villages and Summer settlements, where accom- modations may be had by visitors from the cities. The accompanying list will give the location of many hundred hotels and boarding houses. It is not the purpose of this book to call attention specially to any particular resort or hotel, but merely to state some of the prominent characteristics of different localities with the view of helping the stranger to pick out a satis- factory Summer home. It is proper to state in this connection that there are many large hotels on the South Side which rank with the best in the country. In fact, the reputation enjoyed by a majority of the hotels and boarding houses is exceedingly high. The Long Islander, as a general rule, is hospitable, kindly disposed, accommodating, anxious to please his guests, and is not avaricious in his charges. It is safe to say that a com- parison of rates charged at the different resorts of the East will result favorably to the Long Island landlord. It is hardly necessary to point out any of the advan- tages of such well-known places as Coney Island and Rockaway Beach, which have been familiar to the traveling public for many years. There have been, however, many changes in recent years in the matter of hotel facilities and cot- tage life. Just back of Manhattan Beach, with its world-renowned Manhat- tan and Oriental Hotels, is Sheepshead Bay, an ex- ceedingly popular near-by resort, with its numerous cottages. Beyond Jamaica are many new settlements that offer special advantages because of their proximity to the city. This applies also to Hewletts, Woodmere (Woodsburgh), Lawrence, Far Rockaway, Edgemere and Arverne. To one who has not visited Far Rockaway within the last decade the improvements that have been made in the vicinity of this popular ocean resort can hardly be appreciated. These places are no longer mere A FA^uKITE DKIVE 1 :, ■-%^-» UlTS OF LONG ISLAND SHuKt. Summer settlements, but are occupied the entire year by the city people who find the cottage life in this vicinity especially attractive. There are several pleasant villages along the railroad beyond, such as Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Baldwins, Freeport, Merrick, Bellmore and Wantagh, that may be classed together. They are quiet places, with permanent populations, good society, fine drives, and within easy distance of the water. They offer first-class board in private homes at reasonable rates. At Massapequa and Amityville there are good hotels, handsome residences and varied attractions. In another group of villages farther east may be classed Babylon, Bayshore, Islip, Oakdale, Sayville and Bay- port. These places are directly on the Great South Bay, the finest fishing ground in America — the ■sportsman's paradise. The superior advantages of these villages were appreciated many years ago, and, as a result, large hotels have been built, and some of the finest private homes to be found on the island have been erected. These resorts are termed fashionable because of the large number of wealthv people who spend their Summers there. While this is a fact, the society is by no means exclusive, and the visitor can depend upon generous hospitality and full enjoyment of every attraction that is offered. The train service to these points is excellent. The largest village on the South Side is Patchogue. It is one of the most cosmopolitan places on the island. While it has many transient visitors, it is also popular to many people who remain there for the entire season. It abounds in hotels and private boarding houses. It is the rendezvous for the Great South Bay catboats and fishing smacks. Beyond Patchogue are some of the finest resorts on the island. Among the number are Bellport, Brookhaven, Mastic, Centre Moriches, East Moriches, Eastport, Speonk, Westhamp- ton — all charming places; Quogue — a particularly attractive spot — Good Ground, the fashionable 13 Shinnecock Hills, and the famous Hamptons. Southampton is visited largely by wealthy New- Yorkers; \Vater Mill and Bridgehampton have made rapid progress in Summer population in the ■■ i BMRBI W^r^^^ ^ra -''^'*^9^BhI^^'^^4?7^ Eli ^^'^^ffl^^l 1 Hfl^^Hn^^* ^JUbrl^m ^ft^M 1^1 ^*^^l!i^j^ ''!a^j?VBI^^I 1 D^I^^^K^^ v^' ^^HBhe^u^jkBE mM 1 fc.-T^*^-^** H|nM| M: ^K ' ' ^^^^Sj ^^*3^8B t'' ■ ■ .'- '1 H^^ r B, IIP ' . 3 ■ ' ' \- --«.-« i Bii\w^KBMH3B-JBiM ■i HBH^^^^^B B ^^Inl THE ELMS ON MAIN STRKBT, EAST HA.Tl I'TON. last few year:, while Sag Harbor, formerly one of the best known whaling harbors, has become no less famous as a retreat for city folk during the heated period. From Bridgehampton the railroad extends to Montauk, passing through Wainscott, East- hampton and Amagansett ; these places are among the quaintest and most picturesque in this country. Easthampton is a popular resort for artists. Montauk Point, which has always been an'interesting place, now within easy communication, is'well worth a visit. FROM Garden City the main line of the railroad continues through the central portion of the island, and then along the northern shore on the east end to Greenport. This section is rich in natural scenery, and because of its peculiar situation, with soil perfect for drainage, the hills to the north offering shelter from harsh winds, and the pine trees giving forth health, it is a region unsurpassed for salubrity. Starting with Jamaica, the county seat of Queens County, and in many respects a very desirable summer home, there may be mentioned Hollis, Queens, Floral Park — with all that its name indicates — Hyde Park, Mineola, Westbury and Hicksville. For quiet, health and accessibility to the city, these places can be commended. Garden City, the place where A. T. Stewart spent his millions, and Hempstead, are two exceed- ingly attractive resorts. The hotel at Garden City in every particular is first class, and in Hempstead there are a number of good boarding houses. The drives are superb, churches and schools abound, and the people are refined and prosperous. Central Park and Farmingdale are attractive rural villages, and have accommodations for a large number of boarders. Pinelawn, West Deer Park, Deer Park, Brentwood, Central Slip, Ronkonkoma, with its beautiful lake, the largest on the island, Waverly, Medford, Yaphank, Manor and Calverton, are all communities that can be highly recommended. Many of these places are in the belt of pine forests, a section most favorable to people suffering with pulmonary troubles. One of the largest villages, and deservedly popular, is Riverhead. It always has a full nuota of Summer visitors. From this point on to (Ireenjiort, the end of the railroad, are several very interesting places located on Peconic Bay, namely, Jamesport, Mattituck, Cutchogue, New Suffolk, Peconic and Southold. Peconic Bay is the yachtsman's favorite domain and the tourist's deli;.,'ht. The boatint; here is regarded by some as superior to that on the Great South Kay. The fishing is e.vcellent. The slope from the shores is so gradual that children can enjoy bathing with comparative safety. Examination of the lists of hotels will show that abundant provision has been made in these villages for the entertainment of Sum- mer guests. The visitor may rest assured that he will be well taken care of and that he will not be overcharged. Southold is a ])articularly interesting place. It disputes the claim of Southampton as being the old- est settlement on the island. Greenport and Orient Point have long been attractive re- sorts. The former has several good hotels, which every Summer entertain a large num- ber of people from all parts of the country. Few watering places are better known than Shelter Island. The growth of this ])lace as a Summer resort has been remarkable. It contains every variety of natural scenery and the best of boating facilities Sanitary arrangements are perfect, a large reservoir supplies all the houses A HEKD OF THOROL'GHr.REDS. The splendid roads of the north and south shores, the great number of beautiful cycle paths and smooth, hard edge paths^ — ^"'-' " unsurpassed wheeling. While the hilly country of the north shore gives the tourist climbs, coasts and extended views, the level south shore makes long trips a matter of little exertion and afTords innumerable glimpses of inlets, bays and the ocean. Excellent accommodations can be found everywhere on the island, and the majority of the inns and hotels cater to the cycling public. The many sections of the Good Roads Association constantly keep roads and paths in good con- dition, and the sign boards erected by the L. A. W. giving directions and distances make touring on the island a comfort not known in any other section of the I'nited States. The Long Island Railroad Company is the first railroad in the United States to build and equip bicycle cars with the very best appliances for the transportation of bicycles without injury or even marring of enamel. The "Cyclists' Paradise," a small hand-book issued by the Long Island Railroad Company, has a gOf)d map of the roads and paths of Long Island, together with tables of distances, railroad time-table, hotel lists, suggestions, and, in fact, complete information in condensed form. This book will be .sent to any address upon receipt of two-cent stamp to cover postage. 72 HOW TO REACH THE LONG ISLAND RAILROAD STATIONS.
